<I’m still surprised you didn’t prepare anything.>

What’s there to prepare? Unlike the last couple times, I don’t have the slightest clue about whatever we’re going to have to deal with and more importantly, for the first time taking on one of these stupid things, I’m actually in my element. My magics are all non-affinitied, same with all of my skills. I mean, sure, none of the affinitied enchantments I can make are going to work when we get to the higher floors but I’ll be able to enchant with anything within my status and probably the non-affinitied enchantments on my rings as well, plus I’ll be able to materialize. If there’s anything I need in there I’ll just make it on the fly.

<Mmh, I’ll take some comfort in the fact that you’re at a high level in all your magics at least, even if you don’t have the complete non-affinitied skill.>

What, don’t tell me it’s necessary? I will happily take any and all spoilers.

<You aren’t learning any trial secrets from me, thank you very much, but as for the skill… Obviously, it’s advised to have a person with it when challenging the tower but you’re going with three, it won’t be a major concern. They can pick up whatever slack you leave. Besides, if you have a group with a good range of magics going instead of the complete one it’s still possible, just more challenging. Either way, just do me a favour and don’t go getting yourself killed. No matter how much you’ve improved since taking on your first one, these things always carry a risk.>

Oh, don’t worry, I’m never forgetting that. Still good and traumatized from my time in Galwax’s.

<And yet you’re still looking at taking on another tower after this one is done.> Myriad sighed.

Excuse you, I have it on the highest authority that craftsmans’ tower doesn’t kill people, meaning I’m probably ending on my safest note!

<Probably?>

I mean, if it comes down to it I’m going to challenge another if I really need to, I’ll talk to you guys about it when the time comes.

<Ben->

Oh look, the tower’s in view now, hold whatever thought that is for later Myriad and wish me luck!

<...Just don’t go getting yourself killed.>

Promise.

It seemed they were the first ones there, leaving them time to stare at the entrance, with Ben pushing his mind to try and interpret what he was seeing. All of the magic towers had their doors marked to give a clue as to what trial they would contain and that one was no different, being covered in dozens of squares, numerous lines, five distinct points, and a central circle as he tried to interpret what they meant with that limited bit of knowledge and continuing that thought while they talked, with a question on Thera’s lips.

“So, how are you feeling about this?”

“As ready as I can be.”

“...”

“What?”

“Ben.”

“...Okay, you got me, I’m maybe a little excited,” He admitted despite himself, even with the danger they were going to face and the lingering bits of trauma he hadn’t escaped from past trials. “This is the first tower we’re doing that I actually suit is all, you know? I guess it will just be a little interesting to see how things go when we actually step in there. How about you then? Feeling okay?”

“...Worried,” She admitted. “It’s possible one or both of us will die in there.”

“A risk we’ve had for every tower we’ve taken on.”

“Yeah, but now there’s a child we’ll be dumping even more trauma on if either of us does.”

“You’ve really taken to the whole mother role.”

“Cousin, a completely different branch of family. Superior too, given that even if I’m not stronger, I’m morally better than his actual mother.”

“Ha, your guardian role then, and if you want to pass on this then I won’t stop you.”

“No, I want the extra strength, no matter what. I’d still be a pretty terrible guardian if I died during the third wave, I just didn’t expect this extra bit of stress when I first agreed to do this with you.”

“True, it’s been a hell of a couple weeks, for now though-”

“Guys!” Jake yelled out as he, Amy, and Vasta spotted them from the distance, giving them a wave while they waved back.

“Ahem, for now, let’s do our best to focus on this and then worry about anything else after we’ve safely escaped, and to start that off, let's have a little rundown with everyone first.”

They waited for the others to join them from there, Vasta being the first to speak once they were at their sides.

“You all feeling ready?”

“As we can be. You?”

“Of course,” She laughed. “I’ve long been waiting for this day, it will be good to finally see it through.”

“Cool, and Jake, are you all rested and recuperated?”

“I’m still dreaming about chemistry because of you.”

“But you’re sleeping through the night?”

“Well, yeah.”

“Then you’re fine, that doesn’t even count as trauma at that point. Now though, a few things before we start.”

He pulled a few bracelets from one of his rings as he said it, handing two to each person to take as they looked them over.

“I’m sure you guys have heard about these by now but these are mana and buff bracelets, with the first capable of rapidly filling your soul with it if you’re running low at the cost of just a bit of pain and the second being a bit more pleasant giving you a boost to all of your stats equal to about five percent of my own, at least for the first effect on it. As you can see though, there’s three crystals on that one so you can activate all three at once, even if the effect of each additional crystal halves. Still not sure why they do that, souls are weird and complicated and I’m pretty sure I could spend decades studying the topic and not learn everything, especially when it seems like not all functions of them are going to be relevant to a given universe considering all of the summoned had affinities and resistances despite that being completely irrelevant to life on Earth but I digress. Put them on and give them a spin.”

“Ah, thank you but we’ve already received those bits of your work before,” Vasta told him, rolling up her sleeve to show what she was wearing. “We were considered among the priorities for distribution.”

“Okay, makes sense but still trade them out. Both effects they give are based off of my own attributes and the ones I made this morning will be better than ones I made days or weeks ago and if we’re taking on a tower, I want you guys using the best.”

Accepting the argument, the rest took what he offered as they put on for the full effect, even if Thera eyed his own arms.

“All of those rings and bracelets but I don’t see any of the ones you’re handing out.”

“Hey, you know my rules, I try not to use souls like that outside of the shop.”

“For taking mana from, sure, but the buffs?”

“Mmh…” That was walking a fine line. The difference wouldn’t be so great for him that it would be the end of the world and it was having a soul acting on him instead of him acting on one, but it was still a crutch he couldn’t depend on if he was going to have to try and face off against what was going to be the most powerful god in the galaxy.

But I don’t really want to have that discussion with everyone right now and it looks like if I don’t then they’re going to force the issue. Eh, whatever.

“Fine,” He said, pulling the raw materials from his rings to shape and enchant upon before applying the souls and slipping it on his arm. He had no intention of actually using it but could tell well enough that it would make everyone more comfortable if he had one, giving them that bit of satisfaction before they started again. “Now, let’s talk the first floor-”

“Got us some inside info?” Jake asked, perking up for whatever bit of ease they could take and falling as Ben shook his head.

“God, I wish, all we have to go off of is the door and a few assumptions. See those five points all around it? I’ve gotta assume that’s us, it matches the maximum number of challengers at least which means we’re probably being split up when we go in there. From there, I’d assume the circle at the center is going to be where we’re supposed to go to meet up which only leaves the lines and squares. Now, I’d assume the lines are going to be some sort of attack and they’re being used to denote movement but I could also be way off mark and I can’t begin to guess for the squares. I’m willing to take any ideas on those I can get.”

Not one offered a suggestion, leaving him to sigh. “Yeah, that’s fair. Either way, just do your best to be prepared for some sort of attack, especially if we’re split up. If we’re not then I’m wrong and we can try to re-evaluate together as we progress through it.”

“Sounds good,” Vasta nodded. “In that case, is everyone ready?”

A round of agreement went up among them and the older non-affinitied mage pushed open the doors. “In that case, let’s all do our best to get through this.”

---

The instant he stepped through the door, Ben found himself alone, just as he’d predicted which did give a certain air of comfort to things. He may have been by himself in a place designed to kill him but he’d seen it coming, at least to that point. With the warning given before they entered, nobody would be too disoriented by that turn of events, leaving him alone to be taken completely by surprise over what came next.

A strike hard enough to knock him down and a burst of blood that followed, in the first fraction of a second he’d been in the trial, something tore through his jacket and all of the enchantments placed on it to give it a tremendous level of defense and kept going from there, stopping as his back rib as a baseball-sized object destroyed his heart.

Author’s note

That’s right, I’ve finally killed you this time, Ben! Just try and think your way out of that!

Comments

At this point how is be not expecting it. Thought speed should be cranked to max going in.

Vin Reisling

Doesn't he anchor his created souls with rainbow mana crystals? And I think he also anchored a soul to the soulless plants that grew from materialized seeds

Andrew Carlson

I wonder how big of an audience he has. And if they are betting against him again XD Myriad needs the faith.

Luboš Hemala

Simply condem Ben upward (or downward if he's more confident in it for the next bit) then failsafe yourself back

Corvusamous

Your reminder gives credence to the illusion explanation. Maybe the illusion primary Non-affinity magic to bypass the resistance and willpower weakness that dark magic naturally has. Although I'm personally hoping it's real

Corvusamous

I'd believe Ben surviving after losing his head

Corvusamous

Somehow man is going to either be like "who needs a heart." Or he'll Somehow use the souls as a extra life.

Paperback Hail6

That should not stop his body from being unable to sustain his consciousness once he loses enough blood. I don't doubt he would remain "awake" after that, but he shouldn't be functional if it comes to that. The life trial was a special circumstance, this is different. If he continues thinking, he will probably be trapped in the dark of an unconscious body. He thinks with his soul, but he still needs his brain to interact with his body and the world around him, I had thought.

Carl Mason

There was something from the dead god's trial, where he had the double vision or something because he was seeing through some illusions, so I don't think this is an illusion. Though I did have the thought: if all the magic here is done with non-affinity mana, would his resistances even affect it?

Carl Mason

It's about the whole thinking-with-his-soul thing. True enough, he might be awake while his body is literaly dying. Though he "blanked out" for a while in the Life Tower.

Luboš Hemala

"hahaha! I've destroyed you're heart! It's over!" "Meh, I've had worst"

CF Sapper

What do you mean? Why would he not be able to pass out? His blood regeneration is definitely going to get a workout, but he should still pass out after a while.

Carl Mason

ah thats a conundrum then, forgot about that lol

Joshua Schneiders

An angel's smile is what you sell You promised me heaven, then put me through hell! (dang these lyrics really do sound like they're speaking right to the author)

nugitoBambino

@Mister Cakers Ben taking his first step towards becoming a magic cyborg would bring me tremendous joy. It's a long-time in coming tbh

nugitoBambino

lmao reading your comment and then Carl's response to this back to back really got me chuckling

nugitoBambino

He’s much stronger than he was then and he can materialize plant and animal cells. Hell he might awaken his materialization by materializing living flesh back into himself

Talon88

His disassembly was in the immediate company of trained and prepared healers in a space that prevented him from dying during the trial. This is a very different situation.

Carl Mason

This is the non-affinity tower, which is supposed to be the hardest tower, because non-affinity mana is so variable.

Carl Mason

As proved in previous chapters trails' magic is literally divine(3 tier), so if trail's illusion can't affect Ben then no illusion can.

Ethan Livshin

Honestly I think Ben would be kinda okay if his body died for however long. Plenty of ghosts exist in this world, the only real challenge would be anchoring his soul into his body. So far as I know the only time a soul has been anchored to a body was when they were all summoned and got new bodies.

Mister Cakers

Interesting thought, actualizing a new heart would be pretty funny. “ I destroyed your heart!” “Nuh uh, mind over matter.” But I think it’s more likely he’ll create a mechanical heart. It wouldn’t be especially difficult for him to accomplish, but putting it into place would certainly be a problem.

Mister Cakers

Well I see two options, either this is all a big illusion or it’s real and Ben’s in trouble. The reason I don’t think it’s an illusion, however, is that while yes unaffinitied mana can do anything it would be pretty disappointing to focus on what it can copy, instead of what it can do that no other branch can. The evidence for the illusion was how ridiculously powerful that shot would’ve had to have been to pierce Ben’s reaction speed, legendary cloak, numerous second tier resistances and his high stats to destroy his heart. However this lends itself to the idea that a god or gods interfered with the trial and are trying to kill him. If they did, they should’ve gone for the head. I’m excited to see what truly happened.

Mister Cakers

ooooh, yeah, someones got some explaining to do, what with the craftsmans tower supposedly being the safest since it is for craftsman

Joshua Schneiders

He can't pass out

Sylas Varga

Hmm...do Towers count as off-plane? Could Ben actualize himself a new heart?

Silverias

TFCCCCC

Rain

Poor Ben! Why does awesome author hate you so much? Did you try to teach him something…it seems like the only explanation for your experiences. 😆

Alysyn

That's the tricky part: Ben is practically immune to magical effects like this with his mad restiences, various defensive skills and high legendary equip that is enchanted to the limit. If your aim is to kill him with magic brute force is the only way, and that takes someone like a great spirit or a contendor focused on offense. Everything below that doesn't have the raw firepower to threaten him that hard.

Michigo

Has "reason" ever stopped divine BS from happening to Ben?

Michigo

1) We had plenty of slice of life chapters, Ben hasn't suffered a major BS attack for a while... it's about time; 2) if there is a place for a god to f with him, it's in a trial. 3) If this is indeed some type of divine f-ery aimed at Ben in particular..i can only say: poor Miriad, cause Ben will 110% go ballistic consequences on Miriads mental health be damned.

Michigo

SHOT THROUGH THE HEART!!!, And you’re too late baby, you give love a bad name

James Trautwein

He has been literally unraveled before, he’s gonna be just fine only pissed

Talon88

The earth trial had both life magic (golems) and fire magic (lava traps). Life and Dark were only the single affinities, but generally you can expect other elements be possible here, yes. It just has to be a spell that uses non-affinitied Mana as it's main component.

max grok

And even without Ben, the chance of the other 4 is near perfect composition to finish the tower

Atila M

Don't be so sur. Number of gods want to see Ben dead before becoming tier 3. And you forgot a detail only god with the corresponding domain or invited can supervise the trial and no gods on ben side posses a non affinity domain. Helori keep an eye for the earth and life ones and Analia for the dark one. This tower is the first on where some gods can try something without external intervention or being viewed

Atila M

I guess that wouldn't be lame. I just think it would be cooler if his skill evolves

Isiah Debarros

Except for the fact that they desperately need them for multiple things at this point, and the God that would do this would instantly get piled on because not only did they kill someone who is important enough to the war with their unique items that only they can make, but someone who is actively helping others get job bonuses

Isiah Debarros

I mean, since it's not the third floor, he could just use his magic rings to heal himself

Isiah Debarros

A god interfering makes no sense mostly because it would be pretty obvious and the fact that him dying is the same of him stop working, which is a net negative for the world like they recently learned and they kinda need him alive for leveling jobs of others also beyond that his team is some of the most heavily invested in and people with the most potential so doing anything to jeopardize. Their run of a tower is insanely stupid.

Isiah Debarros

Dark magic are more about mental affects but both are probably not the case cuz illusions are still illusion and mental magic doesn't really work on Ben

Isiah Debarros

I don't know killing Ben when it would be obvious that something weird was happening when he is on a tower run with Jake and Amy who are the people they invested the most into and with Thera who is probably both the strongest mortal mage and the one with the most potential and Vasta which is another mortal that they see potential in is crazy like a death of a teammate could very well lead to everyone getting killed also the gods know that if he stops working more people are going to die if he dies it's the same effect

Isiah Debarros

I don't see it Ben still has that death god to kill also with everyone else on this team doing something like killing one of the members is insane

Isiah Debarros

The other tower for the first 3 had spells that used both the affinity of the tower and another one

Isiah Debarros

Gonna have to use his magical crafting to materialize himself a functioning new heart to replace the demolished one and then use material manipulation to install it in his chest.

Michael Wilson

My understanding was that different magics were not "locked" until after the 3rd floor. I can not recall if towers only used their specific magic in earlier floors. What were the other trial tower 1st floor opening moves?

Mars One

My best bet would be to awaken Material Sense and basically puppeteer himself using Material User.

Luboš Hemala

A magical cyborg heart being designed, built, and installed on the fly while bleeding out from a fist size hole in his chest ...is lame?

Carl Mason

Oh yeah, forgot about that. Mechanical heart it is.

Mister Cakers

Maybe a "mostly harmless" effect ™ that Ben will interrupt making harmful

Corvusamous

SacredSteel had a good point on this, if you haven't already read their comment. What we are seeing could be like with the life or dark tower: no god ever expected someone like Ben to roll up. My guess is that the tower is trying to put an artificial heart into all the tower delvers but that Ben will stop the process that keeps him alive to barely get to Thera. Then he might get a second heart at the end, Doctor who style

Corvusamous

Right? Seems a bit aggressive for just entering the tower. And if it killed **Ben** that fast, then no other non-affinity mage on the planet would sense it in time either which seems counterproductive to the towers being a place to challenge you and help you grow. An attack that can take Ben offguard is overkill for most of the planets possible trial takers. So the real cliff for me is if this was a normal part of the trial, or divine interference of some kind.

Emily Gurnavage

Is it crazy to think that Ben could somehow still "function" disembodied until he manages to save his body? I mean, he even god a skill to move souls...

Luboš Hemala

I'm willing to testify as a witness in the stand, provided I get witness protection. The turnip clan is probably scary.

Barkeep

He could probably actualize a bunch of oxygenated blood yeah. Like there is massive complexity to the entirety of human blood but all he needs is small flexible animal cells filled with oxygenated hemoglobin. The only stretch is if he was interested enough in any of those topics or decided to learn them to teach Thera

Corvusamous

He wouldn't be able to move his blood until he died. Based on his test where he could only move fingernails and hair when removed from his body

Corvusamous

Hoping this is an excuse for Ben to kill a god. Or at least send one to the hells

GreatCabbage

I don't why he could not materialize at least a mechanical heart to keep his blood inside and moving.

Carl Mason

This has strong "rock falls everyone dies" vibes.

Monkofmimmir

Maybe you weren't aware Mr. Turnip - but cliffs that bad are, in fact, internationally illegal. Even got Kim on board. The internet police are on their way. 🫡

Emily Gurnavage

Damn straight for the kill 💀

Logan

I was thinking the same thing but honestly if you wanna put a mental affliction/illusion on ben it's gotta be 3th tier cause no way anything below that is hurting him, and no way the tower has 3th tier magic, and if it does it wouldn't ever be on the first floor

Sammot

Should be: stopping at his back rib

Piotr

I agree Was thinking the same thing about it only being floor 1

Sammot

Dark magic is illusions, but non-affinity can do anything

RSmerlinious0

A god definitely planted this as an assassination attempt

Thomas Issa

Probably an illusion of some kind.

TBONEMAN

Sooooo, does non-affinity magic cover mental illusions?

Alex L

Maybe this is supposed to challenge the user in using barrier? But how did the projectile pierce, what’s likely, a coat enchanted to be stronger than any normal barrier?

Mister Cakers

He could use material manipulation to keep his blood moving but this is certainly odd.

Mister Cakers

Even less likely considering Ben’s reaction time should be stupid fast thanks to his unat thought speed

Mister Cakers

He is in some kind of pocket space for himself. A clone took the hit.

Loki388

3 points. • Non affinity god must have decided to kill him. He don't have any friendly god on his side that have this kind of domain. • the hit must be a death sentence for anyone. Ben's time reaction is top tier even without eyesight (material sense, condemnation) and he has lvl9 piercing resistance and defense enhancement. • It is the f@#king 1st floor. Even the dead god trial was less violent.

Atila M

Is this the famous Ben Heph effect, where the direction was random, but only he ended up like this?

Luboš Hemala

His body already uses mana to heal itself so a situation where he loss a vital part of his body is definitely a situation where I could see the skills merge and awaken

Isiah Debarros

His mind must be going in a crazy overdrive mode.

Luboš Hemala

I think it would be cooler if he learns how to heal himself then actualizing

Isiah Debarros

I'm I the only one that feel like the wording is weird in "kept going from there, stopping as his back rib as a baseball-sized object destroyed his heart."

Isiah Debarros

If he doesnt heal himself, then he has under a minute to get to the others. A bit more if he manages to slowdown the bleeding and somehow stop himself from passing out. He has options.. provided he doesn't receive another shot.

Luboš Hemala

Kinda hard for current ben to survive with out a heart for any length of time I think. Honestly short sighted to not get some life God to teach him how to manifest his own blood. Blood lose is a common way to die.

Barkeep

You know i was wondering how things would go wrong but i didn’t expect an immediate attack

Moatdog

Sus... but Ben will overcome this!

Luboš Hemala

Well yeah but the God's have been shown to be complete imbeciles before

Sammot

Don't think so. Biological matter is way more complex. Even the seed and bread took God's spending time interacting with all his mind to teach him in a decent amount of time. No one taught him his own biological make up yet

Barkeep

I mean I can't see why any god would risk it messing with they towers would probably be noticeable

Isiah Debarros

That would be lame

Isiah Debarros

To be honest I think that his heart was just destroyed mind effects don't really work on him

Isiah Debarros

I mean they are normally light affinity

Isiah Debarros

I mean, that's not true, but also kinda is. Illusion magic has been explicitly mentioned as one of the specialized skills under light magic, with hallucination magic being its dark equivalent. That being said we already know that non-affinity magic can effectively recreate every affinitied spell, the only downside being that someone would have had to come up with a proper visualization for it beforehand to essentially birth the respective skill. So, if there are people around that managed to learn how to make illusions without Affinities then it's still possible the gods implemented that.

max grok

Also, can Ben actualize a working heart in his chest to keep going until he can either materialize enough base cells to make a new one or reach Thera to get healed in some way.

SacredSteel

He could always just materialize a heart, too.

Carl Mason

"That’s right, I’ve finally killed you this time, Ben! Just try and think your way out of that!" That's right floor, I've finally painted you, now I just need to get this last bit of corner ...that i am standing in...

Carl Mason

I see you are going for the shock factor Turnip. I would be more worried if Ben haven't been turned into sliced meat in the life trial and the effect of the trial made his soul stay in the room. We know from corpse song that the non affinity magic can be substituted for life/death magic and the item that stuck in him might be a very gruesome way to keep them alive but bound in a certain way

SacredSteel

FINALLY! BEN IS DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THAT'S ALL FOLKS!

CataFlan

I have no idea where Turnip is going with this, but I really wish I already had the next chapter.

TheCrazyDuck

I was not expecting that level of rigged, honestly.

ReadingObsessed

So is this actually part of the trial or is this someone tampering? Cause this feels like a bit too much, I mean a fraction of a second is to little for almost anyone to react to, with ben coincidentally being one of the few who maybe could react to it if he wasn't caught by surprise!

Sammot

Tftc! What the freak was that?!

brennon Petersen

o7

Kevin Neely

If this really happened, maybe it’s time to awaken demonic integration? Probably not

GreatCabbage

Ben's enchants are so good at this point that I wouldn't be shocked it this was some kind of illusion

Vorquel

So, thoughts are: Some sort of illusion or other mind effect Some god is fucking with things to get rid of him Some high level demon infiltrated the tower

Brandon Yarberry

Even if he dies, he'll get better. But he's not so easy to kill

Alex

Illusions would lack an affinity.

Evan Cathey
