CH787 The Gods and Mortal Potential

“Well, what was the real point of that then, Helori?” Nare asked her. “You’ve never felt the need for us to examine him as well.”

“I meant what I said, it’s good to get a different set of eyes and opinions, especially for what I’d like to present now that you’ve both gotten the chance.”

“Present?”

“A question and a hypothesis. Is Ben still mortal?”

“I’ll admit, with all my apostle can do that's within our sphere it may not seem like it but he still hasn’t passed the third tier, no matter how much closer he seems to be drawing on multiple fronts,” Myriad said. “Unless that has to do with whatever hypothesis you’re about to tell us?”

She nodded. “As far as we know it, there’s a single path to godhood in this reality but just because only one is known is no reason to assume there aren’t any more and as it stands, I’d like to hypothesize that the boy may be walking down a new one. Of course, given how likely he already is to reach the third tier it may not matter but as things stand, if he were to die today, I personally wouldn’t be entirely shocked if he ascended as some higher being, not necessarily a true god, but some sort of lesser deity that hasn’t been seen in this reality before.”

“You wouldn’t be shocked by what would absolutely be the most shocking event in this universe’s history?” Nare chuckled. “But what do you have to back up that claim?”

“You both saw it as well, didn’t you? Look me in the eyes and tell me the boy still has a mortal soul,” Neither immediately responded, letting her go on. “Souls subtly grow and change all the time, it’s why the ones used made such a perfect medium for the system, but there are some changes greater than others as we all know. The change to the third tier is clearly the most obvious, granting a definitive path to godhood for all who walk it but the change to a second tier is plenty significant as well, with Ben having gone through it eighteen times now, with those changes growing and compounding with every new level he gets to them. Maybe he hasn’t reached it yet but when comparing his soul to any third-tier’s the differences I see leave me confident in saying there has to be a certain number of alterations that could lead a mortal with nothing but second tier-options to some sort of ascension.”

“...An interesting idea,” Myriad admitted. “And maybe not impossible but unless Ben dies there’s no real way to test it. I may not know what the previous record for mortals awakening skills was-”

“Fourteen.”

“...But either way, the only way to know for sure is if Ben dies before he manages to reach the third tier, something I believe more and more each day he’s going to succeed at. Potentially even awakening at least one skill like he hopes before the third wave. Of course, if he doesn’t and then all of our efforts aren’t enough on top of it, I suppose we’ll see one way or another as the world burns below, at least until we end up caught in that same fire.”

“Sure, but as he continues to grow and change, that does leave two more things worth considering and trying to prepare for, at least before it happens.”

“Which are?”

She held up a finger. “One, a fact that the gods who don’t know him and don’t know the exact number of awakened skills he holds can’t currently expect, if he does manage to awaken the two skills he wants, ignoring all of the complications that will come with the birth of a god of sacrilege, that still means he might have as many as sixteen other significant divinities.”

Technically, all of an ascended mortal’s skills would convert into realms of power for them but the majority who made it to that tier would only have one from a tier two skill, with that being far stronger than any that sprung from a tier one. Not near what was gained from a true, third-tier awakening but still something that would give them power enough that it let them play on the stage as equals to natural gods who held two or three divinities.

Ben though, holding sixteen along with all of the other skills he’d gained that he still hadn’t managed to awaken, would prove to be a significant figure by that point. If he did get a single skill to its third tier, all he had would comfortably leave him above any other ascended mortal and likely any god who held only two realms of power, but if he instead awakened two skills to the level of godhood…

“Would that place him a bit above any of our kin with three then?” Nare muttered as he considered it, with Helori shaking her head.

“No, not just a bit. Consider what some of his lesser divinities would be, powers that come naturally to us that he’s growing and raising as a mortal. Any god, natural or ascended can actualize but no mortal one had the skill beforehand. All of the levels he’s gained to it in his time as a human are going to turn into a divinity, one that will place him above anything any other god can do with the same power. Same for his newest skill. Even if he doesn’t awaken it, he’ll still be inherently better than any of the rest of us at it by virtue of the fact that it will be within his domain. But let’s not stop there. What if we win in the end? The planet is safe, or at least safe enough that we have some wiggle room to figure out what to do next?”

“What do you mean?”

“Everything the boy’s accomplished, he’s pulled off in a mere five years. An already outrageous achievement which is only made more so by the fact that I genuinely believe he has a chance of claiming the two awakenings he wants in the months we have left, no matter how tight it might be, but that’s operating on a scale of months. From what he’s said of his own lifespan, if he gets those two awakenings he’s looking for, the bonuses might be enough to let him live another what? Two or three centuries after accounting for how it should have already grown? Do either of you actually expect him to stop growing further in that time?”

Both were silent, thinking over the implications of just what that meant. That was all the growth Ben had managed with the bonuses through jobs and blessings and titles he currently had but he would only ever get more of them, compounding the already unbelievable speed he could grow at while Helori went on.

“With that much time available to him, I have no doubt he’ll awaken at least one mind skill and his material manipulation is practically a certainty given that it’s benefiting from the ridiculous bonuses from his world killer job, and Nare, I know you believe he has an excellent chance of getting there for his other crafting skills but with that much time, consider any other skill he might gain. In the short time he’s been on this world, he’s completed around sixty jobs now and even figured out a way to finish any new ones he gets even faster so long as he can keep acquiring options once he inevitably completes his list but if we just look at the pace he’s already gone at, if he keeps finishing sixty jobs every five years then in two hundred years from now he’d have over two thousand done, plenty of them being second and even third tier options. Hell, maybe even another fourth-tier one. With all of those bonuses bound to his soul, how much of a threshold would reaching the third tier even be by as little as a century from now?”

“...You’re saying you think that if we win, Ben might turn into a being with dozens of third-tier skills,” Myriad said, with Helori again shaking her head.

“In a roundabout way but it more circles back to my main point. After all of the times I’ve examined him, I believe enough second-tier skills might be able to compound to create a being that might still ascend, in essence being just short of what we consider godhood but still being a god, but what about a being beyond that? Someone whose soul isn’t being altered by the mass accumulation of second-tier skills, but instead third-tier ones? I’m asking, if we win and your apostle gets to live a full, long life, what will we have if he somehow steps beyond godhood?”

With the question the realm fell silent, all of them left to ponder the question. It was something that should have felt impossible, and yet somehow seemed all too likely. None of them doubted Ben would be able to make it to the third tier if he had the time but Helori was correct, getting to that tier would give him decades more to enjoy it and he wasn’t one to take it easy. Even if he somehow didn’t get the dozens or even hundreds of third-tier skills they thought might be possible if centuries waited for him, he’d undoubtedly get a number of new second-tier ones and for all intents and purposes, that would still put him above any god of that world or any other.

It was Myriad who broke that contemplative silence, sounding more tired than anything else.

“Well, for now it’s only a theory, one I hope the two of you will do me the favour of not spreading around.”

“Pfff, you don’t need to worry about that,” The goddess reassured. “I like the boy enough that I wouldn’t want any of the misguided idiots up here thinking it would be a good idea to try and deal with him before he might truly become a problem.”

“He might welcome that,” Nare laughed. “Turn a situation like that around and he suddenly has yet another chance to try and awaken his sacrilege.”

“And no bringing that idea up with him either,” Myriad groaned. “He causes enough trouble, we don’t need to add entrapment to the list.”

Everything Helori had said was worth remembering but for the time it was only a theory. With months still left before the world might end, they all did their best to tell themselves that even if the future presented itself in such a way, that could only be a later problem.

Comments

It’s weird that they don’t think he could make an T4 skill awakening before death. It would be funny if all of the “Gods” are at half-step or false god level and the next level is true god.

IdolTrust

Well damn that had been floating around my brain for some time now, though I was going in a different direction... what if Ben gets a job into the 4th tier? Or is that just straight up impossible? We at least know it isn't impossible to level a T3 skill...

Simon Andriessen

if ben can materialize a living plant seed, then stopping his biological age would be trivial in the extreme. in order to make the seed he had to know the placement of every gene and every thing that modified each one. the man could literally memorize his current genome and just use it like an uncorrupted save state when he gets older. I dont think most people realize how absurd him materializing that seed is, look up Harvard's inner life of a cell video on youtube and think that this dude does all this from memory.

bioenthusiast

Materialized stuff doesn't disappear. Only actualized stuff disappears.

TBONEMAN

Saying that it's likely crafting gods could materialize since we haven't seen materials in the divine realm besides actualized materials and all that Ben materializes disappeared from the mortal realm when he stops thinking about it but gods have died and their creations remained. Now that would change if Ben could actualize something then "condem" it to the mortal realm

Corvusamous

I mean sure connect is limited right now, but think about how things might go in the future. T3 connect might just have 2x, 5x maybe more distance. Plus it's not like ben can't try and hivemind smaller homunculus. Just take the dance skill as an example, he can just have a 100 1/10 sized homunculus and have them dance continously. That would more easily level the dance skill and finish any dancer jobs

Aurelius

I see a lot of you who speak about amonculus but don't forget that their range stay limited by the range of connect.

Atila M

Don't forgot the lvl9 T1 skill : aim, marksmanship, all the defense skill, integrated demon body, extraction enhancement.

Atila M

The gods can't actualize in the mortal realm so he is better at it than them already

TBONEMAN

It sounds like if he was a god he'd just be a lot better at it than any other god

Corvusamous

I approve this head cannon

Aurora1325

I wonder if actualizing as a mortal leads to materializing as a god

David

Thanks, could have sworn there was an official one but I may be going insane.

SecretsOfTheVoid

I'm having fun imagining some far distant future where some super sensitive magic detector keeps going on the fritz every few hours, and the researchers manning the station know to ignore it, since it's just Ben awakening a new second tier skill he picked up a few minutes earlier...

Person8

You know I’m really thinking that Ben might have the potential to be the universe’s first ever fourth tier skill holder on top of everything hitori just said

Phoenixdrop

There's a discord?

Cole Armstrong

That's the thing: inclination skills only do one thing => make it easier to aquire/ raise certain skills. And as far as homunulus go: right now he only has a few, but he could control thousands at once. => Learning boatloads of basic skills would be easy for Ben.

Michigo

Tbh, to me the gods we have seen are more like minor deities limited to a specific domain. A t4 skill prob just makes the domain in that aspect deeper (so a greater deity). Might immediately force ascension to the god realm at t4 though

Cole Armstrong

Bold of you to assume he will only have centuries. Integrated Demonic Body consumed a lesser regeneration skill. Sounds like something that could eventually awaken into an Immortality skill at tier 3. I do think crafting and enchanting might be hard to get to t4 just because of a lack of skills to enchant with... though maybe he can solve that issue by raising his own skills

Cole Armstrong

As long as Ben doesn't do something stupid like take the all encompassing Non-Affinity Magic skill he will be fine. There are practically uncountable numbers of non affinity magics... and thus uncountable non affinity magic skills. If he ever gets a Divine boost to non affinity magic skill growth, any theorizing he has done on on potential spells will probably spit out a new skill (like what he thinks happened with Condemnation). Also, if he got enough body skills (like dancing) he would eventually get Body Inclination which would make the issue of affinity a moot point. The reason he got Defense Inclination and not Mind inclination is likely that his mind affinity is already so high that he has not managed to increase his affinity for it. On the other hand, as seen, his defense skill affinity was zero at the beginning. The main issue with new skills go brrrrrrrr is finding names for them

Cole Armstrong

At this point with all the jobs and bonuses he have he could be getting new skill every day,he could use 2 or 3 of his clones just for getting new skills, probably should even be capable of grabbing zandale’s skills faster than normal, also with zandale and his diciples amount of skills they should have the sort of jobs Ben wanted to finish jobs faster available, they could probably get together and form some sort of teaching learning loop while speeding trough their jobs.

JC.Angel

Will Ben be able to rival the skill master at some point? Not only will he have hundreds of skills they will all be high leveled and he would have the perfect method to teach them to others.

TheCrazyDuck

We saw how hard it is for him to gain dancing levels, despite every bonus he has it is still just level 1. He has to have at least some affinity for the skill.

TheCrazyDuck

Definitely not Linux

Corvusamous

Yes Inux

Emily Gurnavage

The thought prolly didn't cross their minds lol. iirc the highest anyone in history ever got a 3rd tier skill before death was level 5. Goin to 9 is unprecedented and a step past doesn't exist as far as they know - and Nare made the system, lol. Since its designed to grow im sure itd make something up for Ben, but I dont think it currently exists like even if they used Verbums power to try to get info on that theoretical tier.

Emily Gurnavage

Ehhh, with enough bonuses I don't think it eventually matters how incompatible he is with something - magic excluded ofc since affinities are special. I think that was part of Helori's point. Eventually there is a snowball point. So like if he wanted to get skills for marching or playing a flute, I think with another couple dozen jobs under his belt combined with his insane knowledge and minds he will just start gaining random-ass skills while hardly trying. Like he might have never touched a flute or know how to do music, but if he had read every book on the planet about music and flutes and then made his flute himself to be intimately familiar with it, I bet he'd get "flute skill" in 10 seconds of playing instead of the weeks or months of work it should take. Not NOW, but a few years from now in Helori's projections with all the growth that time implies.

Emily Gurnavage

But now he can make souls, if he awakened the right skills i think he could make a copy or backup for himself.

Erik

This... This chapter was everything I could have hoped for, and more. I keep erasing more because it feels lackluster for such a great chapter, lol.

Emily Gurnavage

Ben could awaken Extraction Enhancement. Maybe breaking down atoms and such...

Luboš Hemala

Primordial or maybe titan if we take som inspiration from greek mythology

Profile Name

Demigod? Ascended human? High human? I wonder how the system would look at that kind of change... and more importantly how many skill does Ben need to awaken yet. He has quite a lot at LVL9 waiting to be poked. And he said himself that he at least aims at three more to awaken, his Soul Resilience, Soul Expansion and Condemnation.

Luboš Hemala

Or more beneficially assuming he takes the more traditional path of reaching T3 and then dying at some point: could he actualize his own body on world and descend as desired instead of requiring a believer for a vessel and enough faith to inhabit them for however long he can afford it?

Carl Mason

That sounds right.

Person8

TFCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

Rain

My mind tells me the golem guy was called Inux, but I could be wrong.

Demolug

Gods are beings that arise in universes, but as we have seen, a "universe" is just a pocket of chaos that has a solid barrier separating it from the rest and has a consistent set of rules within. Tier 3 gods inhabit universes; tier 4 gods probably make them.

Collateral_ink

When he connects to things he stretches his soul to incompace it, but it's still bound to the primary body. So it probably won't work

Barkeep

Myriad broke the silence "Well for now that's just a theory. A DIVINE THEORY!" *Play intro music*

Barkeep

Anyone have the discord link? Left and can't get back in.

DoomByCookies

He should be able to multiply his body skill training by the number of bodies he's using to train. How many homunculi does he have these days? How far away is he from being able to actualize/materialize more bodies for himself at need? IIRC, he can actualized into reality, but it only lasts as long as he's concentrating on it. That isn't much of a limitation for Ben.

Person

I think I'd be a little disappointed if he just became a void god xD

InkDevil

Crack your reality like an egg and become a void god.

Rayse

Plus a t3 inclination skill might be enough to bridge the hurdle of low affinities. Like t3 soul affinity letting him get death or life magic.

Aurelius

I'd argue that with time he'll be able to finish t2 jobs faster and will be able to learn more skills. All he has to do is get one of his inclination skills to t3. Even better if he can get a t3 inclination master job. That's a t4 bonus in learning an inclination skill. He'll more likely get an inclination skill with each t2 job maybe even get one with a high t1 job.

Aurelius

Ben once tried to actualize his clone, but without deep knowledge of his molecular structure could not connect with it. Say, if he tried to learn his own "composition", could he just.. not die ever or create a new homunculus a bind himself to it when needed?

Luboš Hemala

Tftc

Logan

Bold of them to assume Ben will die in the first place. He might just become a wandering god like the void gods. Learning from the universe. Also, his speed of acquisition of jobs and skills would slow down after a while. He is pretty bad at fostering bodily skills and he had a huge hurdle about any affinities variant for skills and jobs to finish.

SacredSteel

Great chapter. Now Ben just has to survive the big bad in a few months.

Rayse

Thanks for the chapter!

SDCard

Why would Ben stop at 3rd tier if he'd have centuries?

Sylas Varga

Didn't he actualize a body for a fly or something? It might be closer to the level of a manikin, but wouldn't Ben be able to actualize a body for himself if something happened to him... I could totally see someone killing him and he just makes a new body for himself on the spot and keeps going - especially once he figures out how to make the golem body for that other guy (forgetting the name at the moment).

Person8

What would you call becoming something beyond a god or a 4th tier god? Transcending?

InkDevil

Ben’s seat of The one above all is waiting for him, he might even go to fourth tier if we wait long enough. That would have to be some insane reality breaking achievements to level to tho

Moatdog

With a couple centuries of time, I'd expect that we'd see the first 4th tier skill.
