Added 2024-12-12 17:21:09 +0000 UTCIt was as Ben got up that morning, about to go to Mora’s room to try and entertain the boy, that he froze in place, his normal routine being enough to help give him a sense for his newest skill.
All he’d done was immediately begin his soul production like he normally would as he’d gotten up, continuing it as he’d walked which had been enough to get a reaction when one passed through him. The souls he made would all linger, just for a moment, but that was the first to interact with that strange new spatial sense he’d acquired, feeling the thing he’d made at a level he never had before.
So if my new sense is tuned into souls in a way my soul sight isn’t, I guess that means whatever bit of mana I can spend with the skill is meant to be used on them, right?
It was the best idea he had at least, so creating more within the small bit of space he could feel them he began to try, doing his best to burn his mana with the skill, trying to figure out the way it was supposed to work until he felt it click, and all at once, the souls surrounding him disappeared.
Another result that made him freeze. All of the souls he’d create would vanish in the end but what he’d just done had gone beyond that, forcing them to disappear instead. He didn’t think he’d destroyed them, if he had he would have expected to be able to see something to hint at such a result, leaving him to only guess that he had somehow forced them to move on faster.
“Which isn’t exactly the most immediately useful, but… I guess if I ever run into any troublesome ghosts and don’t have Thera or Falk around it could be handy and it’s not like the mana cost is outrageously high, it won’t hurt me to practice it a bit…”
<CONDEMNATION LEVEL INCREASED>
“...Which I suppose will be incredibly easy, given that this is a soul skill and all.”
Now that he’d finally awakened his soul inclination and even gained a level to it, raising the skill would be easier than any others in that category he’d trained in the past, even if it was just a background task to work on while he focused on the things that actually mattered but with that small discovery made and sorted out, successfully sating his curiosity, he finally knocked on Mora’s door, hearing the young boy reply.
“Come in, Ben.”
A bit more of a greeting that even addressed him by name, Ben couldn’t help but feel like they’d been making some progress with the child, even if some of that very progress seemed to stem from the spirit’s curiosity. The boy could see Ben’s soul after all and had obviously noticed the changes that had grown in it since the night before, as well as instantly taking note of the level he’d only just gained in his newest skill, but any sort of emotional progress was worth taking.
So ignoring the feeling of being examined, Ben instead gave the child a bright smile.
“Morning Mora, how would you feel about doing something a little different today?”
“Different?”
“Thera’s coming with me today so I was thinking of heading to the shop early after making her and Sonya some breakfast. Since that means you’d be coming to the shop as well, I figured I’d see if you’d be interested in coming there too and you could try a few different things before I start on work.”
“...Alright.”
“Perfect, and that means it looks like you get to try your hand at cooking today too then! It’ll be a blast.”
The boy seemed more neutral to it but at least went along with him as they prepared to leave a breakfast for the sleeping two to find before going off to start the day, together walking through the quiet streets of the early morning.
<CONDEMNATION LEVEL INCREASED>
Once there, introducing the boy to the forge was the same as when he’d first shown Delair, even if safety ended up as a smaller concern. With a body made of mana, it wasn’t like the heat would harm him but he didn’t let that stop him from making sure to properly instruct Mora on best practices, watching and guiding through one of his homunculi while Ben’s main body focused on his own work.
Souls were created and condemned at a far greater volume, the two levels he’d gained to the skill growing the sense that had come with it but otherwise left it largely the same in function while he got to work preparing Amy’s new weapon.
As the first ultra-rare item he’d produced, not counting the church of Myriad given how he’d exploited its creation, he was comfortable calling the tool he’d made her his first real masterpiece but there was plenty of room to improve on its design given how much he’d grown.
It was an item that allowed for the user to draw forth nine different weapons through the manipulation of the barriers that made them up, but Amy held the skill of weapon mastery, there was nothing she couldn’t use and no reason she should be so limited in her choices, so with those facts in mind he got started, recreating it from the ground up.
Before, he had made it by enchanting on disks of white mana crystal, with the way she ran her mana into those crystals dictating what would spring forth and it was largely going to be the same from there, with the main changes being that he’d upgrade the crystal to rainbow for all of the additional power that could be given to the weapons while also allowing significantly more constructs to be added to give even more options to choose from, starting with something he still regretted not being able to create the first time for her, a bow.
At the time, he hadn’t been able to produce barriers with the properties he’d need to create a bow from pure magic but now he was comfortable saying he could do that and more, creating not only the bow itself but also design it so that when it was pulled, arrows of mana would be created as well that could be fired off. They’d only last a minute after being launched but in most cases that would be more than enough to do what they needed to and he made sure to apply similar constructs to the blow gun he’d originally added too before going on from there with all of the new designs he could make.
He still remembered all of the testing they’d done together when he’d made the original and he’d seen her in combat as well, he knew how she would wield her weapons which gave him enough confidence as he designed the rest.
Flails and fans, hammers and hooks, sai and scythes, the list went on while configurations were made, weapon on weapon for any occasion as all of the ones he was aware of were created in a way that would match her specifications to grow her options to unbelievable proportions, ending with well over a hundred designs at the end, all of them made as perfectly as he could and reflected in the final grade, bringing a new upper legendary item into existence.
It was by all accounts a masterpiece, and yet, as he looked at it he couldn’t help but feel unsatisfied. Something about it was wrong, scratching at the walls of his mind as much as the chaos ever would but without knowing what, he did his best to push it away, focusing on supplying Amy’s clones from there.
On that front, he went slightly easier. The main issue with them was that they had no internal mana supply to use but that was easy enough to get past by changing the means through which the weapons were activated, altering the original structure enough that it didn’t require a flow of mana through different points but instead firm buttons. Nothing that would be easy to press accidentally but not so hard that it would be a struggle to change during a fight.
He made one for each clone by the end and didn’t change them much from the original design he’d made her otherwise, leaving her with the nine she originally had but traded out the blowgun for more bows given how much more valuable such a thing really would be in almost every circumstance. He supposed it wouldn’t have been too much more work to give her all of the new options either but given she’d be controlling so many bodies at once, eventually it would just become too much to juggle. Better to keep things straightforward-
“That’s it!” Ben yelled as he shot up, drawing a look from Mora that the clone he had working by the boy’s side rushed to reassure. The new weapon he’d made for Amy was a masterpiece by all accounts, but it was complicated, likely too much so. Sure, he could help her get used to all of those new options by having her practice them while under the effects of his knowledge skill and he likely still would but in the heat of battle it created too much room for mistakes to be made. This was his friend, he didn’t want her losing her life because she’d applied her mana slightly wrong, so then what to do instead?
He’d still give her the new one and the others he’d prepared for her clones would be fine but when it came to new, main weapons it just wasn’t good enough. He needed a better idea, with whatever he’d end with being put on hold. A knock on the door told him that either Thera or Delair had arrived which meant it was time to open the gate to the magic towers to let the other three in as well, but with all of that he kept thinking, looking for a solution that would satisfy the creativity that drove him.

Seeing as how most people take years to level their skills, I think the point stands regardless

2024-12-13 15:24:24 +0000 UTCI don’t think he’s sending the soul to the infinite hells on purpose and I don’t think he knows he’s going that. But 100% yes I agree that he’s unknowingly sending all those souls to the hells.

2024-12-13 14:26:52 +0000 UTCI love how all of you are debating the "copy" part of this question rather than the "sending ... to the infinite hells" part. He may not be, he may simply be destroying them, though that is unlikely. Still, very amusing.

2024-12-13 14:24:02 +0000 UTCAbsolutely. What better way to condemn a soul, than to send them to the place they suffer in the most? Most importantly, does this skill work on living people?

2024-12-13 12:26:39 +0000 UTCCould condemnation help Ben ascend a mythic artifact? Or would it have to awaken to get that sort of scope?

2024-12-13 11:05:41 +0000 UTCThis is probably a worse idea than the sentient weapon fix but, what if he put pseudo randomness into it? Like he gave Amy predictable perameters like distance, agressive-defencive, ranged then made as many weapons as he could to fit each criteria and just through choosing to the wind? Although having that be initially random and having adjusting values based on Amy's reaction to the weapon in the moment might be a starting point for ai

2024-12-13 11:01:56 +0000 UTCIt would be so funny if it didn't though, he just walks into the Craftsman tower as a crafting contender -1 level, makes one nail, becomes a contender and then had to consider if the blessing is worth being in a tower any more

2024-12-12 23:52:57 +0000 UTCSkills and their evolution are very personal, the system names and gives its help but their eventual growth is entirely determined by the user. Ben may have done things that other third tier skill holders wish they could do, but it’s because of Ben’s capacity and ability that sets the bar for third tier so high for him.

2024-12-12 22:26:23 +0000 UTCOh yeah Ben is getting close to mythic and if that doesn’t get him to tier 3 he’s going to have to make something so insanely good it’s going up to the gods realm to awaken
Phoenixdrop
2024-12-12 21:55:39 +0000 UTCHow as it not leveled to 9? Hasn't he been making a bunch of things with both rare materials and techniques?
Redc05
2024-12-12 21:52:20 +0000 UTCSo is having so many awakened skills, that proves nothing, the mind skill should have at least awakened, he used connect to control a space spirit into teleporting him a hundreds of other, that he was also connected to across light years, he as read all the librarys and imprinted toughts into thounsands of people so that they could awaken theirs, how as is knowledg, connect and mind skills not awakened??
Redc05
2024-12-12 21:20:13 +0000 UTCI think he will eventually figure out how to make the weapon read the users mind for the form to take, but I don't think that is enough, pretty sure his crafting is still level 8. Definitely level up material though.

2024-12-12 21:17:06 +0000 UTCFalk had to almost work himself to death after several decades of working on his craft, even if Ben is incredibly talented at raising his skill levels that's a high bar to cross in just 5(?) years.

Moatdog
2024-12-12 21:07:09 +0000 UTCYeah, but it kinda feels like there is no rules for achiving the 3rd tier, the fact that none of the mental skills/connect have passed to tier 3 is weird

2024-12-12 20:38:16 +0000 UTCDefinitely sending those souls to hell... where they're being feasted on, empowering something that the escaped evil god will eventually unleash while Ben is alone in the wild and the only one around to deal with it... Or something like that.
Person8
2024-12-12 20:24:39 +0000 UTCIt's pretty obvious that he should just make the weapons change based on Amy's thoughts. Also hopefully those souls aren't being sent to the infinite hells.
TBONEMAN
2024-12-12 19:59:02 +0000 UTCConsidering that the next thing greater than the upper legendary is mythic, I’d say pretty high.

2024-12-12 19:32:41 +0000 UTCYea, fair enough, I couldn't think of a better term at the time to get what I meant across. Yea grey-goo is more of a mass extinction situation. It seemed like itd get the idea across maybe though, lol.

Isiah Debarros
2024-12-12 18:29:27 +0000 UTCYeah I think so. Although I think grey goo is usually the term for nanobits that eat everything and make more of themselves. In this case I'd go with "morphic" - links up to Amy brain so it's intuitive for her to produce any template. Then add some souls for her to make her own templates from the barriers
nugitoBambino
2024-12-12 18:26:03 +0000 UTCYa it's not that his soul source use his soul as the base for the souls he makes but they aren't copy's cuz that are only partly like his soul it's like calling a fraction of something a copy
Isiah Debarros
2024-12-12 18:25:57 +0000 UTCIndeed. If you check his job list a few chapters ago, Judge was between Slayer and Assassin - both jobs he got during that whole ordeal. So Judge also had to come from then, since the job list is chronological of when he met the requirements.
Emily Gurnavage
2024-12-12 18:25:12 +0000 UTCI will say though a weapon that is all of the weapons in the world and is still easily used feels like mythic item so I hope that's the direction he goes in
Isiah Debarros
2024-12-12 18:24:22 +0000 UTCI don't think the created souls are propey copies. They have a fraction of his attributes but myriad seemed confident they weren't sentient in a discussion a dozen or so chapters back. But yeah, I feel confident they're going to the infinite hells lol
nugitoBambino
2024-12-12 18:23:23 +0000 UTCOne of the great tragedies is Ben not listening to his unnatural inspiration, dropping everything, and dealing with that guy
Corvusamous
2024-12-12 18:20:11 +0000 UTCIf I remember correctly he couldn't fathom the mythical item that aided in growing. What you are suggesting would be a good intermediate step for that since an ego sword would only need to have knowledge put on it indirectly by its weilder while the mythic item that grows light magic skill would recur a higher knowledge on light magic back to the weilder
Corvusamous
2024-12-12 18:17:05 +0000 UTCProblem with that idea is that even if the souls he can make can store knowledge they don't have minds so he is probably going to have to do some else
Isiah Debarros
2024-12-12 18:15:50 +0000 UTCLooks like it
Isiah Debarros
2024-12-12 18:14:01 +0000 UTCYa I was thinking that he is going to circumvent the problem he is going through with souls again. Like if the weapon is a pain to use then give it a AI to respond to inputs instead of making her have to put in those inputs herself
Isiah Debarros
2024-12-12 18:13:07 +0000 UTCIs Ben sending copies of his soul to the infinite hells? Or worse, are they going to the divine realm?
Corvusamous
2024-12-12 18:12:43 +0000 UTCHe probably doesn't have the mana for that like even if that skill awakens remember naloth was on his way to having all magics at the 3rd tier before the god took over his body I think it's and with the number of souls and he used to strengthen him self I think the level of mana in that body is probably absurd and on top of that a god is using it as a vessel and has probably added all of the power that his soul had taken on it itself and its strengthening it self more with the ghosts I don't think it's possible for been to use that skill like maybe if his has a great spirit to take the mana of or if he uses the jacket but that's not happening
Isiah Debarros
2024-12-12 18:10:44 +0000 UTCSo, purposefully sending someone to hell

2024-12-12 18:10:31 +0000 UTCCondemnation definitely sends things to hell.

2024-12-12 18:08:23 +0000 UTCYa if the prototype is at the limit of what mortals can do then if he makes it better he got potentially breakthrough that wall the only thing is that he breaks through with a jacket first so I'm not sure it will get to mythic

2024-12-12 17:45:52 +0000 UTCHonestly Turnip laid down some decent foreshadowing for that to be the case. This version got to upper legendary and Ben is makin a big deal outta his new idea.
Emily Gurnavage
2024-12-12 17:44:29 +0000 UTCYa think Ben is gonna make a "grey-goo" (edit: morphic is prolly better) sort of weapon? Links to Amy's mind and turns into whatever she can think up, rather than just whatever Ben can think to add? Or maybe the same weapon he already made but instead of mana combos itll read thoughts?
Emily Gurnavage
2024-12-12 17:42:27 +0000 UTCDid Ben get the judge job before or after he got soul source? Because if it was before. The condemnation skill has a different use than just sending souls he made to the afterlife

2024-12-12 17:41:08 +0000 UTCDarn, 2 people beat me to commenting that =p yea, if hes helping them move on faster and the name is condemnation... it feels safe to say they goin to the Infinite Hells. Although... maybe the evil God of Death roaming the planet in Naloth's body could benefit in some way since the souls have been condemned and he's an evil death God?
Emily Gurnavage
2024-12-12 17:40:18 +0000 UTCWith the way Ben thinks, I believe he might create a weapon worthy of a god soon as ben is one of the most experience mages with the soul why can't he create something that combines with a person's soul and grow along with them.
Frusoh
2024-12-12 17:37:53 +0000 UTCMaybe he is going to make the weapon smart like give it a soul and make it responds to Amy's thoughts so all she needs to do is think of the weapon and it changes or something similar
