CH765 Thera's Perspective
Added 2024-11-14 08:17:09 +0000 UTCThera didn’t know what to say, she was struggling to put any real thought together in the face of the two before her, ultimately ending with only a question escaping her lips.
“What did you do?”
“Really child, at least invite us in instead of leaving us standing out here.”
“Vividus, tell me what you’ve done here.”
“Hmph, I’d think that would be obvious enough.”
It was. After all of that time, her aunt had succeeded. From the conversation Thera had overheard back when she was only a child, it had taken well over a decade but it was clear her aunt had finally succeeded in utilizing the feature of the system that allowed racial hybridization to be possible. Not like herself or the other mortal half-spirit Seren and not like the union of two different sorts of mana-based life that led to Insia, what her aunt had somehow created was a new type of spirit.
“Is… Are they a soul spirit?” She asked, remembering her aunt’s stated goal back when she’d begun her attempts even then, with the great life spirit confirming.
“They are.”
A part of Thera was able to notice that her aunt didn’t sound anywhere near as pleased with herself as she would have expected but that was a small part. All at once, the world had changed. While there had been three examples to that point of hybrids of spirits and other races, that was the first to exist between different groups of spirits themselves.
Something that, in principle, seemed like it should have been far easier to achieve. Each group may have belonged to different affinities but they all viewed themselves as part of the same species who hailed from the same planet, but when one considered the fact that until then, they’d never been able to interbreed, it became clear how significant what happened really was.
And now, after just getting uncle Ogilt, we have another new great spirit on the world, and… This kid is obviously a great spirit but there’s no regular soul spirits. What does that mean then? Infinite hells, what does it mean for a great spirit to be born in general?
Thera knew how new great spirits came to be, no matter how incredibly rare it was for one to die and be replaced. On a species-wide level, if any great spirit were to die then a seemingly random group of regular spirits that matched the lost affinity would merge into one being, becoming the new one and having no say in the matter as to whether they even wanted it, but she knew that wasn’t what happened there. As uncomfortable as it was to think, she knew Vividus and her uncle Nox, the great death spirit, had been experimenting with replicating the way mortal races would reproduce to try and get the system to facilitate their goal which meant the one she was seeing lacked the normal history any typical spirit could expect.
It was all too much to process and it seemed her aunt wasn’t interested in waiting. No longer content to be allowed in, Vividus gave up on trying to be polite and instead took advantage of her existence as a form of mana-based life and simply passed through Thera to make her way to the living room, pulling the smaller spirit by the arm as she did.
Thera didn’t say anything to that though, she had too much on her mind and instead just followed along, watching them take a seat on the couch before finally asking a question.
“How?”
“Hmm? I doubt I need to explain the details of sex to you child, it seems you and your partner enjoy it plenty enough.”
Holy fucking shit.
She took a deep breath to keep from swearing then and there when what she wanted was answers and instead focused on what mattered despite her aunt's lack of tact.
“You gave birth to a soul spirit. I’m asking how that's possible.”
“The system really is the most handy tool your gods created, even if it didn’t mold perfectly to my desires. To be honest, I spent the longest time trying to make it work by creating an egg of sorts instead of having to grow and carry anything to term but after Lux’s unexpected success and finding out about Insedis forced me to admit there really was only one way that was obviously succeeding and I gave in, replicating the biological structures I’d need to make in my own form. After that, it wasn’t long at all.”
“But… But I’ve seen you! Recently too! I saw you when Ben got back and I saw you for your stupid quest and you weren’t pregnant either time! I may not like you but I’d at least notice that!”
“Ah, that reminds me, give my regards to your little pet. He really did make such an excellent report on the results of your quest, I believe you're one of the people I’m still waiting on getting observations from but his alone managed to make it worth it. It gave me plenty to consider.”
“So incredibly not the point!”
“Don’t be so testy, it’s just something I thought I should mention. As to when though? I’ll admit you’d seen me recently but by then it had already been born. You did however see me soon after I’d been impregnated, when you came along with your little lover along with Lux and Funa. I’m personally more surprised that any of this is a shock to you. I’d been keeping it from the lesser spirits to avoid confusing them but by now all of the greats surely know.”
Her mind flashed to when she’d gone with her aunts and Ben to get him some homunculi made and how tense the encounter between the great spirits had been, getting no answer then but having it now. Vividus had been limited in her mana at the time, just like Lux had been when she’d been pregnant with Seren and had to have been at the beginning of her own pregnancy, too soon to show it if she had at all. Considering the child born had to be made of mana, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think it might not take up too much space but that only brought another question to her head.
That meant the soul spirit was a few months old, tops, but if she were to judge them based on the appearance they took, they had to be roughly ten years old. Obviously, the appearance didn’t actually matter, any great spirit could alter their form in whatever way they chose but it raised the question of just how old it was going to be mentally.
Since great spirits were normally the culmination of multiple regular spirits, they held the knowledge and memories of the ones they’d come from before merging and growing into something more and as for when a regular spirit was born, it would be birthed from the combined mana of the multiple spirits that worked together to create them, inheriting enough of their parental memories to already be considered full-fledged spirits. There was no juvenile stage in their lives.
But none of that really matters.
Whatever curiosity or complication she might have felt, none of that was really the point or what needed to be asked. There was only one question that mattered, finally being spoken.
“Okay, whatever then, I don’t care. Why are you here?”
“Ah, we can finally get to the crux of it, lovely. I’m here to leave it with you.”
“...Viv, what the hell are you talking about?”
It was only then her aunt seemed to deflate a bit, sighing in her disappointment. “As interesting as the result might have been, it hurts to admit but it turned out to be a failure. All of the power of a great spirit but no willingness to use it no matter what I do, and worse, it seems to have taken on the biology I’ve been forced to mimic to some extent, with its mind matching its image. Still, seeing as how you’d turned yourself into something of a success despite your lowly beginnings I thought I’d leave it with you to see if you could make anything of it.”
“...What?”
“Is it so shocking? You went from being able to do nothing with your mana other than annoy the people around you into one of the more powerful mortals on the planet. The issue obviously isn’t exactly the same, it can use its power, it just won’t, but I don’t have the time to try and turn it into something better when it’s going to resist at every turn.”
“Vividus, you’re talking about your child!”
A child that hadn’t said a single word the entire time they were there, sitting quietly like it had been made to do and not moving beyond that while it was forced to listen to the back and forth as Thera questioned its existence while what was by all accounts its mother sought to get rid of it. The great life spirit had said its mind matched its form and Thera could only take that to mean it was mentally young in a way spirits normally just weren’t, its nature affected by the unexpected aspects of the system itself.
“I don’t know what you expect that to mean to me, I’m not so sentimental like your own father or Lux and I’m not the fool Incedis is. I have no use for something that doesn’t work, if you can’t turn it into something useful then by all means send it off to figure things out itself, that might at least force a bit of the growth I haven’t been able to manage myself.”
Closing her eyes and pinching her brow, Thera took a deep breath before speaking again.
“Vividus, get the fuck out of my home.”
“I’ll take that as agreement then. Do let me know if you make any progress.”
Before Thera could curse her anymore, the great life spirit was gone, leaving only herself and the child with the question of what she was supposed to do from there.

Well, guess Thera and Ben are parents now. Very in character for Vividus though

2024-11-19 23:00:48 +0000 UTCRandom morning thought: What was Viv like back on the Elementals home planet? Before they adopted names, genders, or even distinct physical forms. Spoken language. Familial bonds. All of the other Great Spirits I can honestly imagine just fine being content to sort of just "exist" with the lesser spirits and help when needed and simply "exist" when not. I mean, not anymore - they got a taste of real "living" now. But before, I could see it. But not really with Viv. Shes clearly the most driven of the Great Spirits we have met, and her Domain is very clearly the most affected and controlled by her (maybe water or air would compare? Never met them in detail). So back on their planet, did Viv just sort of "exist" until needed by their lessers like the others have described? Did she not play with her life aura? Im surprised she was unable to bring about intelligent life with untold millenia of experimentation available. Although perhaps she/it/they did not even consider the concept of the non-elemental creatures of the home planet growing beyond what they were? Maybe seeing all the possibilities that do and can exist by coming to this mish mash of a planet is what kick-started Viv into who and what she is today? Now she is making up for lost time (and ofc trying to win).

2024-11-14 20:17:04 +0000 UTCVividus is pretty dumb, isn't she? She can't expect the great SOUL spirit to think or behave like herself. All spirit behaviour we have seen so far is STRONGLY based on their element. Hence this young great soul spirit is bound to have a wildly different character than his mother. And lets face it: the only one that can stand Vividus character is herself. Heck, a soul spirit is most likely inclined towards a more empathic way of thinking... no wonder that child isn't doing what Vividus wants. Oh, and if we take the natural way great spirits are born as a base: this new spirit most likely has some memories of Vividus AND Nox, aka two opposing elements. Hence peaking into the mind of the child could be real weird for Ben. xD

2024-11-14 19:21:24 +0000 UTCIt'll be funny for Ben and Thera to meet up at the end of the day to show off that they both have children now. Truly, sometimes years happen in days, and days take years.

2024-11-14 17:11:13 +0000 UTCWhat? It has been **heavily** implied lots of the times they had sex. Sometimes blatantly obvious in the wording, only lacking the actual description which Turnip aint into. For several hundred chapters now, too. And its come up in conversation with Myriad, and Thera with her mom. Edit: oh yea and Theras mom gave her those contraceptive prevention rings/bracelets after Thera asked her mom about preventing pregnancy and her inability to wear enchantments back then without breaking them. So they had sex all the way back when Thera still had to wear the Charm bracers. So before she awoke her magic.

2024-11-14 16:57:34 +0000 UTCSo...that could have gone worse. Not much, admittedly, but it was possible. Since we are in need of a Disney moment, I really hope the Soul Spirit is enchanted by Ben randomly conjuring untold numbers of souls rather than horrified. Also, if Ben ever sheds his mortal body, I just realized he is basically the Great Mind Spirit.

2024-11-14 16:22:17 +0000 UTCOr if he breaks the container after summoning, which he has done quite a lot of. But I agree, it would be interesting if he saw Ben materializing souls and just "gasp, i must save my people!" or something like that.

2024-11-14 15:42:11 +0000 UTCTypical Vividus behavior. I’m surprised Thera let her get out of that alive, but I suppose there’s still time. Maybe once Ben gets home and they start asking the child about what Vividus did to them, that’ll kick off the murder run.

2024-11-14 15:28:00 +0000 UTCNot to protect Vividua in anyway but this could be a maternal move. Maybe she understands that she can't raise it. I don't think so but that could redeem her character a bit.

2024-11-14 15:22:22 +0000 UTC"vivid /ˈvivid/ I. adjective 1. producing powerful feelings or strong, clear images in the mind • memories of that evening were still vivid • a vivid description. 2. 2024-11-14 15:21:07 +0000 UTCI really like the idea of the soul spirit making Ben's conjured souls into soul spirits so much. They would no longer be temporary (I think they are temporary) and this will probably help the war effort a tonne. Although not a fan of new borns having to fight so hopefully a supportive role
david kirkup
2024-11-14 15:18:18 +0000 UTCI agree with this, I know the spirits are non gendered and therefor both he and she are not applicable so the best we have for them is it and them. I think most people have been using the spirits names rather than pronouns but we don't have a name yet either.

2024-11-14 15:16:17 +0000 UTCOr if the child will make a soul spirit out of one of Ben's mindless souls. That is assuming that they'd want to do anything like that. They should be content to play some video games and read until the world ends

2024-11-14 15:08:56 +0000 UTCTangent. Yes the only pronouns that have been used for the soul spirit so far have been it. 2024-11-14 14:07:55 +0000 UTCActually, i rather wonder what kind of reaction it will have to Ben. Obviously, i expect it will react to the souls constantly popping in and out of existence around him with some sort of affinitied awe, or maybe anger, but what about when it sees Ben's soul? That has always been something that freaks out soul mages, how would a soul spirit react?
Carl Mason
2024-11-14 13:16:32 +0000 UTCI've been thinking about what Ben could get in exchange for his new Soul Bracelets. Trying to get Blessings from the gods is a fools errand. Even if he got them, he already has so many that another one only provides a minor boost. So I thought about this: What if Ben asks for 1. New people/creatures to connect with (to complete his Alien Thought Structure). Just 1 Person or Monster for every X bracelets he makes. In addition to warming my collectionist heart, it would allow him in the future to add a huge amount of esoteric senses to his body if either Thera gets powerful enough to do it, or Vividus becomes trustworthy enough to work on Bens body. 2. He could ask for skills he doesn't have in his library yet, no matter if they are Awakened or not. I imagine many of the water-lifeform skills are missing. Maybe he can even gain more pseudoskills from certain monsters/animals (like with the ape) that no one managed to replicate yet. I imagine there could be an Achievement for using (almost) every skill, among other things. Maybe even a T3 job, if he is incredibly lucky

2024-11-14 10:37:32 +0000 UTCShould have understanding of the worth of a life? That's something that comes from culture or the instincts of a species evolved to heavily rely on group social activities. For life in general, many do nothing for their children after birth (or egg laying.) As for unrelated lives and those of other species, most life forms care nothing for their worth if it is of no relevance to their own survival. Some lives will be prey/food, others a threat, and plenty completely irrelevant. Does a songbird value the worth of a deer? And to objectively consider all life, countless lives are created and dying all the time. To something in tune with the concept of life in such a way as these spirits, there is no force from that concept to compel caring for a few specific intelligent lives. From the standpoint of elemental life, is an innocent child more important than a random bug?

2024-11-14 09:32:41 +0000 UTCYou know with how all the other spirits have been reacting to having kids I actually kinda had a bit of hope that Viv might have some like innate maternal instincts kick in and become a little bit of a better person if she had a kid you know because she is LITERALLY MADE OF LIFE MANA AND IT REALLY FEELS LIKE SHE SHOULD HAVE A BIT MORE UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORTH OF A LIFE but nope we get a literal sociopath like life spirits are actually pretty nice like they are nothing like this woman so how the hell did a bunch of them combining together result in a personality like this oh my god I just had a thought WHAT IF SHE WAS IN LOVE WITH THE GREAT TIME SPIRIT

2024-11-14 08:37:52 +0000 UTCI now have a beautiful mental image of Vividus holding the baby soul spirit while screaming at it 'DO SOMETHING'. She's seen 3 other spirit hybrids born and knew for a fact that they are all their own entity with a much different perspective than their parents, it's funny to me cause she's narcissistic enough to think she would give birth to a perfect copy of herself but with soul powers.
