“Hmm, you know, while I’m out here I suppose I could visit those three,” Ben muttered as he walked through the hot city, trying his best to ignore the nearby volcano as he went through the streets of Nare’s lands. “I could get them one more level of connect while I’m here, maybe even easily so long as they’ve been practicing.”

<There’s really no need.> Nare told him, gently trying to give a bit of mercy to his granddaughter and the summoned of his nation. <Nati and Xilly are working hard, they haven’t been slacking.>

“Yeah, but seeing as how the world is ending we want them getting all of the growth they can, don’t we? Come on, send them over to the research center so I don’t need to find them. I’ll help them both get a quick level and then be on my way.”

<...Very well, I suppose it really would be for the best.>

“That’s the spirit, and is everyone else I asked for already at your church?”

<They are.>

“Cool.”

He picked up his pace as he heard that, making his way to the first church of Nare before letting himself in and finding fifty people waiting for him, all at his and their god’s request. People who either wanted strength or felt enough loyalty to the world to be willing to participate in what many would call a mad experiment to let Ben carry on the testing he couldn’t just do with the demons to see the further results of altering their base souls.

“Hello there, I’m the apostle of Myriad,” He greeted them brightly. “Sorry to keep you waiting, I believe Nare already gave you all the details of what’s happening but if you could all take out your cards so I could see them I’ll go over the details with you again before we start, okay?”

He got some nods and some rummaging as the people who were waiting for him pulled their cards from their pockets while he went around, not only looking at them but also secretly ruffling through their minds and memories to see the various other times they’d checked their cards in the past and how much time had passed between each one in order to create a rough evaluation of each of their natural growth rates to compare against for his tests, leaving him to smile in the end.

“Perfect. Now, as for why you’re all here, to put it simply you’re about to have your souls modified. The process has already gone through preliminary testing and while I’m confident it’s safe, there’s always the potential for some risk. What I can say is you’re going to be sore for a few days after this and there’s no escaping that fact. I feel pretty safe assuming most of you have never experienced soul pain before but all you can do is wait it out. Now, what I can tell you is the purpose of this all. All of your attributes are going to grow after this and rather significantly too. Your mana alone will grow by a few hundred points and your intelligence by almost a thousand which may feel a little weird to you but while gaining that growth so easily may seem more than worth it, what we don’t know for sure are the long-term effects. Namely, if that's going to affect your personal growth rates at all. As you already are undoubtedly aware, being buffed can pretty severely stunt how your attributes grow while under them so there’s a chance that this could do the same thing on a permanent level. I think that result is unlikely but it is a possibility all of you have to be aware of before we start. Now, having said all of that, if any of you want to leave, neither Nare nor I will hold it against you.”

Nobody left, not that he expected them to. Ignoring how hard it was for mortals to ignore the gods who they gave their faith, Nare had also been selective, searching out his believers for the ones who wanted easy power or the ones whose growth rates were low enough that they’d never have a chance of getting such high increases to their attributes before the third wave, which was admittedly the majority of people by then. More power meant better odds of survival, if the only thing they were risking was their potential for further growth when they’d be getting hundreds of points in some attributes in exchange without the need to work and train for them then that was a trade many would make.

So with all of them consenting he got started, moving through them one by one as he looked at their souls before materializing on them, each person getting one of the three potential options that would give them five percent of his attributes in order to see if there’d be any difference in how any of those configurations acted, with the only thing left being to wait.

He could feel the pain in them all, not overwhelming but undoubtedly there and he tried to sound at least a bit sympathetic while telling them what to do.

“Alright, you’re all done for now but even though it hurts you can’t take any breaks. The point is to see how this affects your growth rates so live how you always do and Nare will be in touch with all of you in around a week to see how your attributes have changed.”

They gave their agreement, many through grimaces, before they began filtering out of the church and back to their lives, Ben appraising them as they went. Even with the change he’d just caused, with how high his intelligence was especially, he could tell that some were already thinking clearer as he subtly connected to them, an already worthwhile result for anyone in the world even beyond the growth to any of their others.

And so long as that works I can then begin doing that on a much, much bigger scale. I’d need to make sure I get at least a couple more levels of soul expansion and I’d need to get paid if the gods want me doing this on a big enough scale, which let’s be real, they will and in that case, I should try to get them to raise my attributes even more since that will get paid forward to the people I help too but all of that is a future problem. For now, let’s see if Nare’s people and the researchers looking at all of the new magic materials in the world have found anything interesting for me.

Increses his mana capacity, as far as we know, but could potentially do other things.

Luboš Hemala

I have to admit that I am a magic materials science nerd, and would gladly read a series that was basically nothing but that if it existed. I'm pretty sure that not many others would, though. Those are often my favorite parts of any stories with crafting elements in it, scratches that brain itch just right.

Isaac Boyles

To be honest, that would be quite lame

Isiah Debarros

What does Soul Expansion do exactly?

Quinn

That's a perk, not a problem.

Collateral_ink

Well.. he could XD and the gods would be even more angry

Luboš Hemala

He could use the great spirits to get through all of them except the Time Trial.

Collateral_ink

Soul Expansion and Soul Resilience as T1 skills are prime candidates to be raised by Magic Tower Trials.. though not sure how he would go about completing them to the top, unless carried by someone.

Luboš Hemala

He’s probably still helping people learn spirit empowerment as was agreed upon

Arson Void

My best guess is that in the wake of the soul change they’ll experience weaker growth until their souls have fully healed

Mister Cakers

Sure but Ben can use mental symbiosis and get them to materialize souls. Once they get the hang of it they should be able to do it themselves.

Mister Cakers

Tftc

Lyncher98

I'm really interested to see where this leads. The "empty soul" skill is particularly interesting. I had a thought that it might be something of a placeholder and allow the recipient to easily receive a new skill which would take the place of the empty soul

Collateral_ink

Once Ben gained effectively infinite mana with souls, there are suddenly numerous ways Ben could end the mortal aspect of the war. Between saturation bombing of the planets, grey-goo style enchantments, infinite ammo magical machine guns, and so forth it's kinda scary how deadly Ben is now. But, Turnip realized that, I imagine. That's Oaun's narrative purpose. Even if Ben wipes out all of Oaun's demons, Oaun himself is still unstoppable and would win by himself right now. Therefore, the only thing that eliminating all the demons would accomplish would be to get Oaun off his ass and get involved, leading to everyone dying.

Collateral_ink

They were indirectly involved in him, getting distracted. But like if we're being honest, then like withholding that healing is one thing but it's just like the level of animosity they had towards him in general like I'm pretty sure and most cultures you're supposed to respect people who take time other day to teach you things

Isiah Debarros

Anyone else feel like the soul melding will actually increase the stat growth of the people? If stat growth is based on the souls capacity to accommodate the increased stats then it seems reasonable to me that the extra capacity would mean more growth?

TheLostGolem

Sooo... I figured out a way to absolutely ruin the third wave...(on my phone and I can't figure out how to start a new paragraph without posting - so this will be a big wall of text). I was wondering if things turn out okay with Ben's soul surgery - could he use it on both minor and major spirits? The spirits can't usually grow - so even if this kills their growth rates it might be perfect for the spirits... That probably wouldn't make too huge a difference for the third wave, but that made me think about the first wave when he was using the spirits and sending antimatter bombs through the portals... He's doing the smart thing in not trying to repeat that, because the demons would be on him immediately and they'd definitely sabotage it - so to avoid an anti matter going off in his face he can't repeat what he tried before... Instead he's now got devices that can materialize for him and nesting expanded spaces. Make a bomb with an anti-matter materializer linked to a bind enchantment so it only goes off more than a million miles from their planet and tuck that into a small bullets sized package that will evaporate when the bomb goes off... Send those through the portals and start crossing off demon worlds again - the god of destruction has caught his breath and is ready to go again.

Person8

There is the issue of quality. The gods will have to deal with other contenders and maybe T3 skill holders, and even buffed by 1k in every attribute for everyone, that is still very low in comparison to someone like Abel who has 15k and more.

Luboš Hemala

For real. I wonder what else the world might know about Souls and Soul Magic if all the previous soul mages weren't kept and managed as strategic resources and instead were allowed to be people. Sometimes though I also wonder how much of the Forbidden Knowledge in the Library basement is related to Souls or Soul Magic. We know a big chunk of it is related to using sentient species as ingredients, but theres more down there too. Maybe the soul mages are kept leashed for what the majority of the Gods see as good reasons. (More reasons than the awakening stuff I mean. Like threats to the divine.)

Emily Gurnavage

He materialized something unstable, got distracted, lost control of the volatile substance, and was injured. His pleas for help were outright ignored based on racist and otherwise discriminatory grounds.

Carl Mason

But what about a third soul ok the second soul?

Rain

Not surprising, considering that from what I can tell they aren't actually allowed to learn or experiment. They pretty much get told to do nothing day in and day out aside from enhance skill growth on the gods' favorite pet mortals for their entire lives.

Collateral_ink

The whole world may be ending in a matter of mere months. Not a lot of time for proper peer review and safely conducted trials, unfortunately. For a real world example - look at how fast they went to human trials for Covid vaccines during the pandemic vs how many years or even decades that process takes when the world isnt at threat. Sooooo many usual safety laws and regs and review processes and so on had to be ignored (with govt approval in these cases) if we wanted a vaccine before it was too late.

Emily Gurnavage

Man I feel bad for the soul mages. Ben is outclassing them on his usefulness in every turn so far.

SacredSteel

Maybe, but we don't know. Right now, there are two distinguishing features of the dryad trees, or three, I suppose. 1. From Dryad homeworld. 2. Mentally developed to near sapience. 3. Magically conductive. Testing to see if Frederick is compatible at least removes one of the variables. Personally, I think it's a combination of 2 and 3.

Collateral_ink

Weren't they responsible for the wound as well somehow? Maybe im misremembering it slightly. Been a while. How did he get hurt in that scene? It was his leg artery bleeding out, right? I know Thera tore off the front of the mansion a bit later, but he was already hurt before the mansion got damaged.

Emily Gurnavage

Pretty sure the reason the dryads can't reproduce with normal trees is beacouse they aren't from their home world, not because they aren't sentient.

TheCrazyDuck

Your apirit is in the right place here but I take issue with attempted murder because the entire problem was them not lifting a finger. It was reckless endangerment/ medical malpractice where they with held life saving treatment

Corvusamous

I doubt it, Elvat said he had no idea how Ben was materializing souls and now Ben is doing so directly onto other souls.

TheCrazyDuck

Short, sweet. and to the point! Thanks for the chapter

Benji

Yes it's weird but image of the Eldritch teir 3 lady taught Ben how they would fight with their soul to repel connect so now Ben has people to practice with

Corvusamous

Yea I also doubt this will mess up growth rates at all. When people grow, it IS the soul growing and changing. Helori has said as much when examining Bens soul damage in the past. So a change to the soul like this should count as a change to the base template. Like an awakening. The new points are simply factored in as if they suddenly grew into them, rather than feeling like an outside buff.

Emily Gurnavage

It is kind of funny, but I do enjoy the occasional mentions of Frederick. I also see places where it could become story relevant, at least tangentially. I have a pet theory that because Ben's mind interacting with his, Frederick is developed enough that a dryad could reproduce with it the same way they can with the trees from their homeworld. That has huge implications for their species. Not a big deal right now, considering the world is ending, but still important and it would be a nice narrative payoff for the plot thread.

Collateral_ink

"Smart enough not to be rampaging monsters" But even the truly smart ones still want to do what they do. Some are properly smart. Smart enough to hold conversations and such. We have experienced several chapters from their POVs, and all that they desire is to make their God happy/proud by growing stronger and conquering and killing and growing stronger and growing stronger and- .... Im pretty sure Ben making them smarter would just make them an even bigger threat lol.

Emily Gurnavage

sucks that zandale isnt being considered now that ben is trying to grow his power for combat while not having the skills for it. esp smth like non-affinity magic would be crazy for him to get, not to mention interesting to read as a reader too

elkress

Fricking Frederick lol gtfo of here. I always forget it exists until you Frederick cultists wriggle up through the floodboards. I swear, theres gonna be riots from a certain section of the reader-base if that tree/bush/plant doesn't get some sort of insane ending in everything. Maybe it will end up as a sort of Yggdrasil lol.

Emily Gurnavage

Wow, that was fast. Didn't expect soul experiments on people yet.

Luboš Hemala

"Students" lol. Hm. What word could fit better? He taught them, yes, but they also all hated each other and they tried to murder Ben and he intentionally traumatized them and physically abused someone repeatedly until it broke his mind somewhat. Students is *accurate* I suppose, but it also feels so very wrong lol.

Emily Gurnavage

>"in that case, I should try to get them to raise my attributes even more since that will get paid forward to the people I help too" Ooooh amazingly solid point. I *knew* that it worked that way, Ben figured that out like almost right away with those experiments, but like I also hadn't fully thougut about what that meant yet. If this soul modification plan works as good as Ben hopes, then yea, there is zero reason remaining for the Gods to not bless Ben with nearly everything they got left in the tank and then let him soul modify the planet. Just keep enough divinity for emergency interventions or whatever but dump the rest into Ben's stats.

Emily Gurnavage

I have no mouth and I must scream!

Thando vanika

<...Very well, I suppose it really would be for the best.> Lol id love to hear the poor groups reaction to Nare telling them whats happening. Do they *dare* talk back to their God himself? Do they try to refuse, or bargain, or beg? Or do they simply accept it, however begrudgingly? Ben really did traumatize them quite badly. Like, enough that its hard not to feel sorry for them except they literally tried to murder him in cold blood so that sort of balances things a tad.

Emily Gurnavage

Damn, that’s a terrifying thing to be able to provide. I wonder if Ben could teach the soul mages how to do that? Their stats shouldn’t be too much worse than his, at least outside of his intelligence and maybe mana regeneration. Three people providing these kinds of boosts would be better than one. And if everyone is really really lucky, they could improve each other!

Sesharan

he first tried this with hostless souls before trying with demon souls before now with true sapients

Aloysius

Or! Ben could attach a soul to Frederick to bring him to true sapience! Not sure what a tree/bush would do with sapience, but Ben can figure that out later.

Collateral_ink

Magic material chapter! Also Ben's students will be back huh

Corvusamous

Since the souls he materializes seem to be in some way connected to Ben, I am curious/nervous about unseen side-effects incoming. Of course, maybe this could be used to improve the intelligence of any demon he attaches a soul to and make them smart enough to not be rampaging evil monsters. That's the disney victory condition, I suppose.

Collateral_ink

TFCCC Has he tried putting a soul into the new soul?

Rain

Tftc!

brennon Petersen

This is going to be interesting, I think that since the system is in essence helping souls grow, this should not affect growth rates negatively unless theirs are somehow higher than Ben's.
