Added 2024-10-30 16:01:19 +0000 UTC“Alright, what the fuck did you guys want so badly that you couldn’t even let me have a few days to be pissed,” Ben said as he arrived, with Phixth getting most of his glare while Myriad floated to the side. “Seriously, if you know anything about mortals then you should know that plenty of us don’t like being disturbed while we’re in a bad mood.”
“I would just like the opportunity to talk, Ben,” The stone god told him.
“Well, I’m here so get talking.”
He had no intention of being polite but the deity before him paid it no mind, having expected as much from the beginning as he brought forth a chair to take a seat, trying to look softer for the angry mortal.
“I know you’re unhappy-”
“Wow, excellent fucking detective work on your part.”
“And I understand why,” He sighed. “But all of us are just trying to do the best we can. I’m trying to do the best I can. I’ve in essence been put in charge of leading discussions involving you for a while now for the simple reason I’m impartial to your actions in a way so many others up here aren’t, either loving or hating you, and tied into that is the greater need to look at the world as a whole. There’s no way to make everyone happy with everything we do, the goal is usually more to keep anyone from being completely miserable.”
“Failed a bit on that front, didn’t you? Of course, what do I matter? I’m just some lowly fucking mortal, not worthy of the consideration of all you high and mighty gods that so graciously rule this doomed world.”
The sarcasm was thick in his voice but again Phixth ignored it, looking Ben in the eyes. “Yes, we have failed you there but I’d like you to try and understand why. Regardless of what some of the more vocal gods might say in the matter, Ben, I actually do feel a decent level of respect for you. In your time here you’ve worked hard, harder than most and your skills and talent have blossomed exceptionally under your efforts, but you’re just one man. Through the growth exploits you’ve found for yourself you’ll grow even farther but you could also use that potential to help others go beyond their limits as well. No one can force you into it Ben but I’m asking you. Please, help the contenders and the third tiers of the world grow.”
“...You know what pissed me off the most about you first asking that? It wasn’t that you wanted me to help at all, it’s that you lot have clearly never once listened to me in any of the times I’ve dealt with you.”
“How so?”
“I work, I get paid, it’s as simple as that but instead of trying to negotiate or make any sort of offer in exchange for my efforts and discoveries, you waited till some random god got in my way and then tried to weasel yourselves in.”
“I understand why you may not have been pleased with that but this costs you nothing and it would appease the more vocal among us who are upset about how paying you out your experience last time went.”
“Fuck them and fuck you. It’s not about that, it never was. There hasn’t been a single time I’ve succeeded at anything that I didn’t need to fight tooth and nail to be properly compensated for my work. Some of you felt like I tricked you with that last one? Yeah, I fucking tricked you, but would you have rewarded me otherwise? At the time I said I deserved to be gifted in levels and blessings from all of the gods of the world and you know what? I was right then and I’m right now. If you don’t think saving not only the planet but also all of you as well was worth that much then all of your desire to hold onto your faith makes you greedier than I could ever be.”
“The timing of it though-”
“What, you think that’s my only example? The braces I’ve made, the ultra-rare and legendary items I’d been flooding the world with, the fact I discovered that demons had been integrated into the system and the fact that I’ve personally helped awaken hundreds already on top of piles of other things I’ve done and yet still, all the gods of this world see is a person to exploit. How many people are alive and have benefited from me? Hell, let’s get a bit more personal. How many of your people are alive or have benefited from my existence on this planet? Have lived through the second wave after being awakened by me or survived a demon attack with one of my weapons in their hands? You want to know why I’m not going to do this Phixth? It’s because so many of you up here see the fact that I don’t respect you in a way you all think you’re due and they seem to think that makes me lower than any other mortal when all I’m doing is giving you the same courtesy I’d give any other person I’d meet. My work and my efforts aren’t appreciated and every god who thinks it’s because I’m not humble enough needs to take an actual fucking look at themselves. So you failed. I’m not helping the planet anymore and frankly, this conversation has killed the only bit of wavering I’d felt on the matter.”
For a beat, Phixth was silent, taking in what Ben had said before a notification went out between them to break it.
<ACQUIRED PHIXTH’S BLESSING>
“...This isn’t changing my mind.”
“It’s not supposed to,” He sighed. “It’s to show that I don’t disagree with you and for what little it’s worth, I appreciate the efforts you’ve put towards this world. And to hopefully buy me a few more minutes of your time without you storming off.”
“...Fine.”
“Thank you, I’ll be back shortly.”
He left them there, only Ben and Myriad still in the realm as the apostle slumped down.
“Man, what a pain in the ass,” He muttered before turning to his god. “So what’s up then Myriad?”
“Worrying about you,” He said, sounding hurt. “You’ve never cut me off like that before, I was concerned.”
“Ugh, sorry, you know it wasn’t because of you. It’s like I said, I just needed a break from everything… Well, a bit more than that. Hypothetical question for you. If I was to abandon this planet entirely would you come along?”
“That doesn’t feel particularly hypothetical right now.”
“Super hypothetical, it’s not like I have a spaceship.”
“No, just a space spirit and the ability to pour infinite volumes of mana into him.”
“Wow, absolutely never considered that. How devious of you Myriad. Now answer the question.”
“...Ben, if you could save yourself then I’d be thrilled but I now have hundreds of people giving me faith on this world. I couldn’t just abandon them.”
“Oh, no need to worry about that, if I leave I’m kidnapping all of them and bringing them along. Hypothetically of course.”
“...”
“Anyway,” Ben went on, changing the subject to give his god time to think things over. “What’s been happening up here while I’ve been having my break? It’s been great for me personally, I’ve worked on my art in a way I haven’t done in ages and bought all sorts of new ingredients on top of experimenting with a bunch of new dishes. Honestly, if I hadn’t spent the time so incredibly pissed it would have been a nice couple days.”
“How nice for you,” Myriad said dryly. “It’s been a nightmare of meetings and arguments up here.”
“Hmm? Why, what’s going on?”
“You. They were obviously about you and how things worked out. Hell, Nare and Helori both basically took charge of the crafting and knowledge gods to force the others to try and fully understand the scope of what you’ve done for the world so far in terms of how projections for casualties have ended up alone.”
“Considering how the first wave ended up, I feel a bit complicated about that.”
“That wasn’t being considered, only your own efforts. When looking at all you’ve made and accomplished, they’ve made a fairly compelling point that you’re the single greatest factor in keeping losses so low and with a few of your latest inventions, if you stop making things we’ll have a noticeable drop in our odds of surviving the third wave.”
“And I’m sure plenty up here still didn’t care.”
“Well… What matters is that a lot did. Just all the awakenings you’d helped with can’t be understated, Ben. For that fact alone, entire cities still exist. Regardless of how others might feel, the gods who know you want to see you getting the appreciation you’re due.”
“...Well, thanks. I’ll take that into consideration when deciding if I’m going to abandon the planet.”
“Hypothetically.”
“Hypothetically.”
A thin smile on his lips from the back and forth, with those final words Phixth reappeared in the realm and Ben turned his eyes back to him.
“Well then? Come back with a compelling argument for my help?”
“Perhaps.”

The unexpected flood of notifications left him to pause as he processed them all, neither having expected to get something like that or been prepared for it, nor what it meant. If it was what it sounded like then he’d just received something equivalent to a tower blessing, one given by the gods of the world who ruled over those with passive magics.
A completely unexpected boon, big enough that he felt himself soften just slightly at the idea of doing what they wanted but not enough for him to give in. It was great, but was it worth the weeks or months he’d be losing out on to do what they wanted?
He didn’t know but he wanted to see what the god who’d given it had to say.
“So what’s that supposed to be about?”
“To show you that there are gods in this world who really do appreciate you, Ben. The passive gods especially will never forget what you’ve done for their peoples.”
He wanted to say that if that was the case then getting their collective blessing shouldn’t have come as a result of him giving up on the world but held his tongue on that matter, saying something else instead.
“So now that I’ve gotten it, I should just do what you want, should I?”
“No. Take it as a show of sincerity and a request to be given a chance to talk things through. You were right before, I’ll do what you say I should have from the very beginning. I would like the chance to negotiate for your help.”

2024-10-31 14:44:45 +0000 UTCLaw and justice are very subjective. Remember that the nazis used law and order as a large talking point, and Jesus was considered radical when he suggested /only/ taking an eye for an eye, keeping punishments proportional. Gods of law and justice are not guaranteed to be just in a way that we would recognize as such.

2024-10-31 12:08:37 +0000 UTCI agree with nugitoBambino that this is a feature of solid world-building. However, a caveat in this logic is that there should be, or at least I assume, a god of justice and/or law that should have led a plan on how to effectively allocate resources and see the injustices done on the mortal population by the gods themselves. One flaw that I see with my logic is that probably these same gods would have perished protecting their planets allowing for their inhabitants to escape probably... and to why we don't see them as part of this assemble of gods
Andrea Vella
2024-10-31 10:46:25 +0000 UTCAgreed! but I think it's a characteristic of solid world-building. Aliens from all over come to single planet and the biggest commonality is the existential demon threat, that a reasonable individual would assume their odds are terrible of beating. Using the end of the world, especially where victory seems nearly impossible, as a time for petty drama sounds exactly how that would go down.
nugitoBambino
2024-10-31 08:23:45 +0000 UTCIt’s been in the background (and often the foreground) of pretty much the entire story, but something about this arc is really making me think about how fractured this world is. Even faced with what sounds like actual PowerPoint presentations about how Ben may well be the most important person on the planet, it sounds like the gods are still barely managing to even present a united front. Obviously Ben presses on some of the world’s biggest fracture points (the pride of the gods, in this case) but all he’s really doing is revealing the problems that lurk underneath the surface. If the demons were ever actually defeated, I would not be at all surprised if it took less than a decade for this world to descend into civil war.

2024-10-31 01:06:25 +0000 UTCNo. Punishment should not be part of the negotiations. That's the whole point of Bens tantrum. Punishment should happen, negotiations over Bens services should happen, they shold not have to be dependent on each other.

TheLostGolem
2024-10-30 23:20:44 +0000 UTCYes, but it's irrelevant if Oaun isn't stopped. For all that the gods have done a shittastic job of preparing for the war, the fact is that if it were ONLY the demons, even including the tier 3s, the world would survive. I say survive rather than "win," because I'm not sure more than 50% of the population would still be alive, all the ecosystems would collapse leading to widespread famine, the loss of healers and mages would lead to millions dying from disease and exposure, and internecine conflicts would probably bump that down to 10-25% total remaining population. It's a shitty, grim, horrible future, but it would be there. BUT they aren't just dealing with an invasion; Oaun could kill the entire planet and all the gods on it by himself the moment he decided it was no longer worth waiting around, and at present there isn't a thing anyone could do to stop it.

2024-10-30 22:28:31 +0000 UTCPhixth coming to the tables and treating him at least cordially is a nice step up, but the fact remains that even forgetting the blatant abuse of power exhibited by the other gods in attempting to force ben into servitude, Ben can't do what they ask for one simple reason: it won't work. They are all doomed unless someone can kill Oaun. Only Ben has a chance at all because of KoS, and it's a microscopic chance that only factors at all if he manages to awaken it and several other skills, and that's only possible if he manages to complete all his jobs ASAP and work for as long as he can under all the bonuses possible to just have a tiny glimmer of a chance to make it to tier 3. Using Ben as an experience mill to complete 1-2 jobs for other contenders or tier 3 people won't improve their odds against the true threat. All it will do is ensure Ben won't be ready to fight him, dooming them all.

2024-10-30 21:27:39 +0000 UTCFinally some progress with the gods and having a pantheon understand his perspective and appreciate the work he conducted. There should be repurcusions on the god that interfered in this process and also to the other gods that view Ben as a nuissance. Would really like to have the gods in favor of Ben and the neutral gods broadcast the negotation to their followers to let the people now that some gods are not worth putting faith in them and have them reveluate in whom they should place their faith in! FYI, really love the drama in this arc, only caveat is that we don't have enough chapters. Thank you for the interesting development.
Andrea Vella
2024-10-30 19:59:29 +0000 UTCEither that, or he could be paid in blessings, increasing his power tremendously, and i mean actual blessings, not the mini ones he got for his stats for awakening people, something like a major blessing per tier 3 job would be hella worth it.

2024-10-30 19:34:43 +0000 UTCI think it depends, he knows mind users are rare, if the gods are willing to treat it like a transaction they could incentivise their followers to take mind classes and help ben in exchange for his services. If the gods are actively promoting it he'll get more mind users than if he just put out a quest in the guild, the followers that take the classes are probably going to power level them with bens plan making everyone involved more powerful. He could also pick which gods he works with and force all of the ones that went against him sit on the side-lines and watch as others make years of growth in a couple of minutes.
Markopolo
2024-10-30 19:30:23 +0000 UTCOh good more people in the pantheon have a brain, IMO if they didn’t do demands and instead treated Ben with good faith and negotiated properly, I think there wouldn’t have been so much turmoil. Plus the god that interfered should be restricted or have consequences as Ben went through the legal procedures and paperwork and by interfering they upset the official process which also diminishes the trust people have in that institution. Anyways thanks for the chapter

2024-10-30 18:49:02 +0000 UTCSo now that Ben got a blessing, he's in a position where he can do a lot of invaluable things, but he himself doesn't need anything from them. Well, aside from more faith, but it's still a limited resource. I honestly don't know what Ben can reasonably ask for, aside from things like "let me kill that god" or the like. He doesn't need money, they won't let him into library basement, he doesn't need anything material at all. I think their agreement will be "don't mess with me on pain of death".

2024-10-30 17:02:20 +0000 UTCOh dang yea that space spirit ritual is a wild idea. Do you mean just connecting, or forming a hive-mind? Imagine if he formed a true hive-mind with the entire race. With *all* the spirits even, of every element - that way the ritual can involve a lot more types of safeguards and such for an endeavor like that. Edit: Although... imagine what that would *do* to "Ben". So many spirit minds vs 1 Ben (oh like 9k Bens but millions of spirits still). With how spirits think, the resulting hive-mind might choose to stay that way.

2024-10-30 16:34:03 +0000 UTCGood point. They have a crap ton of mana and can handle using it all at once in a single go (Theras big diff between her n her elemental family) but whose to say what the upper limit is? Their mana pool and regen have always been the same iirc those explanations. They cant grow the same ways like the mortals can. So I suppose why would their souls necessarily be capable of handling much more mana than what they have always contained? . If they tried to do something like that though there are measures they could take. Yuzu and her fish-counterpart both actively keeping Ben and Ogilt's souls from shredding themselves, Thera and Vividius (Lux?) physically healing them, and whatever BS Ben would cook-up to assist everyone.

You were right before, I’ll do what you say I should have from the very beginning. I would like the chance to negotiate for your help.” . I mean we obviously all expected at least a chunk of the Gods to realize how bad this was. I didn't have the hope that as many would realize as they did though, and seems like Nare and Helori are to thank for that extra push. I was half expecting this to fully divide the pantheons. But still, they gave Ben quite a lot. Im really surprised even that group blessing is a no strings attached sort of applogy gift. Its less than he would have gotten if his adventurer guild request hadn't been blocked, but that was a singular God, so its nice so many are trying to make it right. Even if not all of them are doing it for the reasons Ben would like (survival vs actually seeing his point). . Those negotiations had damn well better include *punishment* for that interfering God though. If the Gods try to say no, Ben can ask if theyd rather decide on a punishment now or they can go the path of Eneth which nobody wants to see with Ben's new capabilities.

2024-10-30 16:16:02 +0000 UTCPhixth gets some serious credit from me on this one, because he clearly understands exactly where the gods currently stand in Ben's estimation and is negotiating accordingly. If anything, I'm a little impressed since it seems like most of these gods tend to view themselves as naturally superior to everyone just by reflex. Possibly because in many ways they kinda are, although I'm sure literally being worshipped doesn't hurt that any. That said, I hope the god who started this entire mess is starting to feel the pressure - it'd be great if her people ended up with some sort of problem only Ben can fix and she had to come begging him to help but I imagine that might be harder if her faith is pretty multispecies
