With his first plan done, he continued to count seconds until the time the demon would see its inevitable future came forth, waiting for what was sure to be a brilliant distraction but forced himself to continue to jump and dodge in the meantime as he avoided as many spells as he could, feeling his body wear down in the process.

He was straining himself but he couldn’t help it. He was one man against a swarm that was only growing by the minute, even as he fired back when he could to try and thin them out. The demons of the woods were descending on him, with his only benefit being that none were coming too close, instead choosing to fire their spells while keeping some room between them.

It was a gap he’d need to break eventually but the window for it was on its way. With only ten seconds left until the demon would see the future Ben had worked so hard to create he took all but two hundred of his many minds and directed the rest to finding different options for how he wanted to face the future, splitting it into hundreds of thousands of potential paths and stunning the demon in control at the same moment it would have seen the true endpoint Ben had created.

It was enough to create a distraction though, pushing that discovery off just a bit farther as he used that window to shoot himself forward, activating his shoes for all of the extra speed he could get to break the distance between them as the demon looked on, first preparing to reacting but freezing again in realization, with whatever it had been trying to do drawing attention to the end point of all of its paths no matter what it picked. One where the awakened skill holders it had brought into its thrall had all disappeared.

It was a future it couldn’t figure out how to prevent and one that Ben had begun working on creating hours earlier, back when he’d harvested all of his voidstone from his guns that he could.

One piece had gone towards holding Azeezol, Queemit, and Joois but it was the three left that really mattered. Both times Ben had attacked Pato and Fone by trying to batter them away with a swarm of pebbles he’d snuck a piece of enchanted voidstone into each of their clothing, using his magic to bind it to the fabric so they’d be locked in place no matter where either of those two ran and then doing something similar to Thera.

In her case, he had no choice but to be subtler with it though. When he’d attacked the other two it hadn’t been worth the effort to dodge when the demon could see they’d come out unscathed but in her case he could easily imagine a future where it used the barest fraction of her power to block the attack, forcing him to use his mind instead as he actualized around it to slowly carry the small stone over until he could cast his magic to bind it to her outfit in the same way.

With all of it leading to that one result as the demon began to panic. While it could hypothetically avoid that future if it found the stones or thought to do something like stripping them, Ben knew from personal experience that it didn’t matter how smart one was or how far ahead they could think, there would always be blindspots in one's thoughts that weren’t so easily dealt with.

With its continued flailing making that more and more apparent. It didn’t know what to do about whatever was happening and the time limit was approaching as fast as Ben as he ran to the demon, talking to Myriad as he did to keep the futures around him as varied as possible.

Give me a number!

<Sixty thousand three hundred and four.>

Futures collapsed as Ben materialized oil under around the feet of some nearby demon before casting an enchantment on a bit of stone to make it combust and threw it over, lighting them on fire.

Again!

<One hundred and ninety-two thousand, six hundred and fifty-seven.>

More materializing as Ben took a deep breath before he created two large blocks of frozen gas in among the crowd that rapidly melted around them and forced everything to deal with its effects.

He’d materialized the one with the lowest freezing point he was aware of and by being created in an otherwise warm woods it instantly began to sublimate into a super-chilled gas that began freezing the area around it while others breathed it in.

It wouldn’t kill anyone but it would be far from pleasant, even he could feel its bite on his skin in a way he expected would need to be healed later, and with it choking out the air around them it would leave plenty light-headed until it dispersed as he continued to shrink the distance.

Again!

<Eighty-four.>

An aspect of actualization that time as he got closer, materializing boiling metal to rain down around them in a way that continued to strain his mind as everything within range screamed. He knew from his testing that it was transmitting the feeling of extreme heat in a way that would cause overwhelming pain but for whatever reason, there was no genuine energy being transmitted. In essence, it was a psychic attack of sorts meant to cause suffering and nothing else, not that his targets would be aware of that. Even if they could see the future and tell they’d live through it, that didn’t make the agony any less real while he was maintaining it.

Ben could see all of this was straining the demon too, providing too much stimulus from both Ben’s attacks as well as all of the futures he kept creating as he chose one and moved to the next, ultimately leading to Ben’s victory.

He’d sworn to himself that no matter what happened he wouldn’t attack the demon in control until the five minutes he’d needed had passed and he had forced himself to abide by that with every fiber of his being. If even a fraction of him planned on attacking when he got in range then that would lead to an avenue where it could see what he was planning and try to stop it so even once Ben had his victory by blocking those futures and reaching into the demon’s mind he didn’t end things there.

He’d blocked that path from himself in order to get so close and while a part of him knew it wouldn’t matter now that he was already within range, dealing with prophecy had proven complicated enough as he instead used his massive mind to process all the demon was seeing to pick the futures he wanted for himself.

An outcome the demon didn’t understand. All at once, the futures he was seeing had changed, no longer having hundreds of thousands to try and process but instead only a couple, but each time it moved to take advantage of one it saw them completely change before its eyes, not understanding that Ben was reacting to its thoughts to alter the outcome before it could begin, nor knowing how outmatched it was.

It may have been using hundreds of minds to process the futures around it but it was now facing off against thousands and was being backed into a corner. It knew if it wanted to live then it needed to either go beyond its limits or run away and now that it seemed outmatched despite the numbers it had, the choice felt obvious as it tried to bring Pato to it, only for that to be foiled the second he arrived.

When Pato appeared, already preparing to teleport the demon away, Ben was already attacking him with moribusial stored in one of his rings, binding the other fast enough that bones were surely broken but succeeded in ripping away his mana as well, leaving him unconscious and the demon trapped as fear started to claw at it.

Now somehow escaping really was the only option as it desperately tried to see how, using everything under its thrall to think harder as their minds were pushed while its time magic was pressed even further, trying to go beyond its limits in the face of what it had found.

It had wanted a new limb, a mind and body to make its own but it had found an unbelievable monster that could warp futures faster than it could see. Every move it could make was being countered before it could make it and pressed the beast to strain itself all the more, feeling its eyes bleed and its brain begin to break down under the pressure as it struggled for any possible means of survival as it saw future after future where it was either killed or taken over itself and once the first time limit passed and its most powerful limbs disappeared, fulfilling the future where they were pulled into the enchanted voidstone Ben had bound to them, that desperation made something change.

In a moment of clarity, it felt the wall it had been pressing up against come down as notifications rang out in its head, telling it and Ben of just what the pressure it had been applying had accomplished as a flash of mana lit the forest.

Long fights like this can feel like a drag, but that has more to do with reading them one chapter at a time here. If this was a book (someday is surely will) this would feel completely different. Oh and i like the fight, but i get people that feel like it's getting boring.

Michigo

I think technically Ben's awakener title helped the demon here.

TheCrazyDuck

In addition to what everyone else said about blessed skills— the third tier awakening always provides a bonus skill. It’s just that it has a 90% chance of being a tier one skill and a 10% chance of being a tier two skill. (In comparison, a tier two awakening has a 90% chance of no skill and a 10% chance of a tier one skill. Blessed skills just make those 10% chances into 100% chances.)

Sesharan

Ya his thought speed skill is a fusion of two thought speed skills that then awakened

Isiah Debarros

Oof, what if it has a more direct connection to it's God and then it recognizes Ben and tries to do something hateful through the demon?

small_brain_boy

Ya but your T3 is almost always your blessed skill so it should be a guaranteed T2

Isiah Debarros

Probably its a god in the same way as the outsider is one

Isiah Debarros

Can't he just grab it with hive mind at this point? He can force the whole weight of his mind on it and break it, right?

Voidsong

😂😂 haha oh my gods that's awesome. System: LISTEN HERE YOU LITTLE SHIT

Voidsong

It reaching T3 means it's "technically" a God, which would make it easier for Ben to kill it because King of Sacrilege right? Sacrilegious gun go brrrrrr

small_brain_boy

I was thinking this mentioned it on another reply. Can't wait for the demon pov where it is wondering why it's losing worse now that it is stronger

david kirkup

Wow

Rain

If I remember correctly, when awakening to T3, you have a chance to get a T2 skill at similar rate than when going from T1 to T2, but if you don’t get a T2 skill when going to T3, you are guaranteed a T1 skill.

Demolug

I'm loving this fight but there's no way Ben cheeses this without getting to T3, right? Right? Plz the buildup is all there!

Simon Andriessen

the Prophetic Time Magic should be a T2. Ben said it was way too powerful (6 minutes into the future) to even be a low-level T2 skill. It being a contender actually makes a lot of sense.

Simon Andriessen

And it kinda needs to be Enchanting that awakens... then he can enchant with Temporal Domination.

Simon Andriessen

Did... did this demon just get an Awakened (T2) skill as a bonus to his T3 awakening? High is a typical adjective for T2 versions of skills, no? Is this because of the species or does everyone get a T2 skill for getting to T3?

Simon Andriessen

If Temporal Domination is a Tier 3 skill, Ben would have to reach Tier 3 in Enchanting to enchant with it. To me that looks like the only way he's winning this. That would be one hell of a T3 skill to have in his arsenal for any future enchanting as well... whatever it does, it sounds broken. Actually, a skill like Temporal Domination might be at the core of the thought speed enhancement enchantment on his codex artifact.

Simon Andriessen

It combined with soul magic though. It seems like it would grant more dominion of souls or life and death, because that is what the soul spell was doing. But then the name makes little sense. Perhaps it could change the thinking speed of others through soul magic? But then where did the prophetic part go? Anyway the only way I see Ben standing a chance now is if he manages to enchant with Temporal Domination himself, to counter it? But if prophetic time magic is a Tier 2 skill then Temporal Domination is a Tier 3, so Ben HAS to awaken his enchanting to do that.

Simon Andriessen

If he doesn't make one of those knifes it would become a god after he kills it

Isiah Debarros

And all the doubling of stats from Ascending as well. This is not gonna be good for Ben.

Cheuk Hin Ho

If that skill is literal, as in complete dominion over time within a specific range, I can't see how Ben would win even if he awakens to third tier.

Collateral_ink

Ben's luck stat keeps on falling. I wonder if it's karmic punishment from the system for all the times he's broken it over his knees?

Mr R

High Thought speed enhancement is T2, so Temporal Dominion must be T3

Hydrabogen

Haha, in this case though, Soul Magic is a Blessed Skill, so he was guaranteed to get an Awakened skill

Hydrabogen

I am hating this arc

Redc05

I mean its one of the demons blessing skills, they always give a bonus skill

Griffus

i mean, ben can kill gods with sariledge so he might be able to just straight up kill it

nugitoBambino

Ben's and it not really close

elkress

I think the biggest fuck-you here to Ben is that the demon got a bonus skill from the awakening. He's the only one that doesn't get those lmao

Clara

I love this fight so much

Corvusamous

Well the demon now has one of the two thought speed skills Ben got to level nine combined got to level nine again and then awakened to his current thought speed skill but the big problem is it now has a true soul magic skill that was combined with time magic focused in on prophecy making it a god this will be fun

Phoenixdrop

I feel since the chapters are shorter it feels more drawn out but I's still enjoying it

KENNETH C

Hmm. In some ways, this might actually benefit Ben. Sacrilege is now going to point out weak spots, and will also probably provide Ben with resistance against being controlled by this “Temporal Domination”.

Sesharan

T3 skills are like the lower tiers in that they don't always have levels, for example Verbum's Akashic Records skill doesn't have levels. It also seems like levelless skills are more likely to awaken into skills that are also levelless, ex. Alien Thought Structure

Abdul Rehman Zia

If the demon ascended to godhood, then it would be one of those gods with zero faith. And as far as we are aware faith is the main source of power for gods.

Michigo

Damn, that's rough. Finally getting rhe upperhand but enabling the enemy to unlock their own protagonist powers to level up tnrough adversity. Ben truly is the master awakener =( to his own detriment. Thanks for the chapter!

Benji

He also has like 5000 minds to work with and can probably use the new skill it got too

Isiah Debarros

It's a 3rd tier now it's time and prophecy magic were merged and so that had to be awakened

Isiah Debarros

Depends what skills. The paranoid summoned’s tier skill has no level, but soul magic does, it seems skills can be level-less at any tier, depending on the type.

Demolug

I think king of sacrilege will have to wait for the evil god of death

Isiah Debarros

It mentioned a wall like 3 chapters ago

Isiah Debarros

Really? To each their own, I suppose, I found it interesting and stimulating. A bit hard to follow perhaps.

Demolug

I'm assuming that you only get adjectives with T2+ skills - so I'm assuming Prophetic Time Magic is T2, so would have to awaken to T3

Baskaran

So the demon is third tier now. Oh boy, Ben might need to awaken to third tier himself in order to counter this.

Nathan Ganesan

Was it definitely a contender? Was that confirmed? I just noticed that the skill didn't have a level, but I thought t3 skills did (could definitely be misremembering). But if so it's new godhood would potentially make it weaker Vs Ben which would be funny.

david kirkup

This fight has turned boring from how long it has dragged on.

Evan Cathey

Ben is going to need to seal its soul if it dies and becomes a god it's would just strengthen the demon god

Isiah Debarros

He's now gotta fight a newly awakened god! King of sacrilege awakening time?

Baskaran

Oh. How will this change the outcomes? Ben will have to get that high thought speed skill as well. It's surprising. Was the time magic not awakened or did this demon become a tier 3 now?

SacredSteel

Tftc!

brennon Petersen

Turnip is really ascending his cliffhanger skills with this one!

Michigo

Ben is still faster but now the demon has the skill and he can level it

Griffus

So, which mind is faster? Myriad said that it was close one betwen him and Ben some time ago.

Luboš Hemala

Damn, can this demon just lose already?

Uroš

Damn that's rough buddy

Isiah Debarros

I feel cliff-hangover.

Luboš Hemala
