Added 2024-01-07 17:36:30 +0000 UTCOn the final day of teaching his students, Ben couldn’t keep from clicking his tongue in disappointment as he finally freed them from his mind for the last time.
“So you guys only managed to get to the seventh level of connect in the end, huh? A shame, but nothing we can do there. When I’m gone, make sure you all keep practicing, alright?”
He got nods from the two girls, but they and Zallith were all teary-eyed in their relief. After the worst week of their lives, they were finally going to be free of him.
Saying it was just a week didn’t even do it justice. They all felt like they’d been forced to spend at least a year in his head by the end of things, having knowledge shoved into them as they were either forced to practice connect or stuck helping Ben with training his. But it was finally over, how could they not want to shed some tears?
“If you assholes keep thinking like that I’m pulling you back into my mind for another hour of practice. An hour of real time to be specific. When I came here I had fully planned on being a very nice teacher so all of you make sure you remember that for anyone you guys meet in the future, understood?”
Again his question was met with swift nods while the only three others in the room looked on.
“These are your friends?” Insia asked Thera, both her and Rocky feeling unsure after what they were seeing, only for her cousin to try and paint a brighter picture than what was really there.
“Oh, don’t worry. Ben’s just a bit of a tough teacher. They all get along very well otherwise, isn’t that right everyone?”
She shot them all a murderous look as Insia was turning to see their reactions, getting to watch all of them fall in line.
“He’s really a great guy!”
“He’s worked really hard on teaching us this entire time too!”
“He’s definitely a sane individual and not a danger to society!”
…Good enough I guess.
It seemed like enough reassurance for the small fairy at least and she went to fly around them, letting her curiosity take over as Ben continued his last lesson, handing both Nati and Xilly knives while signaling Zallith that his feet were getting tired, letting Ben enjoy his footrest one final time.
“Okay you two. Your last project is going to be applying the stuff I’ve taught you to those knives the best you can. Both of you make something interesting for me to judge. Oh, and it’s good to test your multitasking too, so Insia, do you think I could ask you to chat with them while they work? Just to be sure they can handle juggling a couple different things?”
“Can do!”
“Excellent, thanks. And that just leaves me with one final thing. Nare, what do you think?”
<It looks like you’ve gone above and beyond.> The god said cautiously. <But after all of that, I’m not sure if I should be punishing them further for mistreating you at first. They’re all uncomfortably close to mental breakdowns and I’d like to remind you that one’s my family.>
“I would like to remind you I literally almost died.”
With them only hearing half the conversation, it wasn’t hard for the three to figure out that Ben was talking about them from that sentence alone, even if the sudden eyes on him were waved away as he tried to make them focus on their work.
<Will community service be good enough at this point then?>
Hmm, I still hate all of them but on the plus side they’re all afraid of me now and even if they sucked, only one of them was actually in a position to help me but didn’t…
“Fine, that works, their fate is sealed.”
He felt Zallith clench under his feet while the other two froze briefly, again needing to be waved back to work after that misleading statement.
<That was mean.>
You’ll clear it up later, it’s fine. Aside from that, any complaints with how I’ve done?
<Pfff, how could I possibly? Both girls were able to enchant items to at most high rare in quality before, I can already tell that what they’re each working on is going to be making it to ultra rare. As sadistic as it might have been, I can’t exactly argue with your results.>
It wasn’t that sadistic.
<You made them live out a year in the span of a week, with that entire time being devoted to having them do nothing but train and study. If that’s not sadistic then I don’t know what is.>
Fine, fine, my title of monster is well earned but my students leave fully educated, it’s worth the trade. So if you’re that worried about their mental state, does that mean you don’t want me teaching them again in the future?
<Is that something you’d seriously do? I’d assumed it had been a threat to make them more willing to befriend the little fairy.>
It’s not something I would go out of my way for but if I’m ever in the city again I’d do it for a couple hours to try and push them up a level, or if they ever get to the ninth if you let me know I’ll come back and try to awaken then. Of course, since the only way I can really think to do that would be to expose them to a significant portion of my mind, we’d need to make sure there’s healers around in case that ends up being a bit too much for them.
<...I’ll give a hesitant yes for now but only if I’m sure it’s not going to be too detrimental to their overall mental health.>
Sounds like a plan.
With that done he got up and walked over to where the two worked, both of them having a spirited conversation with Insia as they did, trying to put on the friendliest moods they could as they answered the girl’s questions and explained what they were doing while Ben peeked at their work, pleased at what he was seeing, even without then being finished.
While they weren’t using his complex system to its full potential, both of them limited by the more normal way they each thought, they were making use of it, pushing their minds to place down blended weaves and rings while applying the enchanting modifier to each, giving it that extra boost of power.
Hmm, but they are both a little strained by it. It would be good if they could also get some mind skills but with Zandale so busy they might just need to hope they can gain them themselves.
<Since they have awakened magics, they’ll both be learning spirit empowering from him eventually.> Nare chimed in. <When that happens I’ll see if he’ll teach them parallel thought as well to make things easier on them.>
And that means another problem solved. Okay, everything looks good.
No matter how rocky it had been, in the end he couldn’t help but feel just a little satisfied at having taught them both so much, hopefully leaving the world just a little better off for it too.
---
After the two finished their enchanting, Ben looked over the final results one last time, commenting on where he thought they could improve but largely giving praise as his last bit of teaching finally came to a close.
With it done they moved on to a bit of lighter conversation, trying to make sure Insia opened up to them while watching to be sure they’d behave themselves, but after a few hours of that passed with things moving in the direction they wanted, it was finally time for the two to say their goodbyes and go home.
While Thera focused on her cousin and Rocky, Ben looked at his three, with Nati managing to come off as genuinely sincere at the end of it all.
“Thank you for all you’ve done for us,” She told him, bowing her head and thinking less about the horrors that were his lessons to instead focus on the way he’d helped improve her relationship with her grandfather. “Even if it was hard, I appreciate it.”
“Don’t worry about it, and if any of you guys have any questions about anything, just pass them on through Nare. No matter how it turned out, I’ll at least answer the best I can.”
It was a far less sentimental goodbye compared to what Thera got to enjoy, but it was appropriate. They weren’t leaving as friends, he still didn’t even particularly like them, but they had all officially learned from him which was good enough.
It was only a few words, but with that they parted, Ben and Thera walking back to the gate, one seeming a lot more depressed about it than the other.
“You think she’s going to be okay?” Thera asked him. “If those three actually do anything to hurt her then I’m going to be going to jail for murder Ben, I hope you’re prepared for that.”
“It will be fine,” He laughed. “And if it's not then she’ll have the rest of your family and you too. With the two gates in your parents’ place, you can visit as much as you want to make sure things are going okay.”
“Mmh, I’m going to have to,” She sighed before focusing back on him. “Actually, are you okay? You seem tired.”
“I am tired. Teaching was exhausting, I’m so glad to be done.”
“Ha, well you can rest when we’re back home.”
“Oh, your uncle is going to wish I’d be willing to do that,” Ben told her, wearing a wide grin as he imagined everything he’d be doing soon. “The man is never going to know peace from me now that I’ve got him as a resource and I’ve got a lot of plans for him.”
“You do remember that you’re the student in your relationship, right?”
“Of course, a fantastic, wonderful student who’s ready to learn everything he can.”
And test everything too.
There was always more to try and with the time Ben had, he fully intended to get as much explored as he could.
Even if I might make time for a small nap first.
Author's note
Here we are, the end of arc 16 and it was certainly one of the longer ones, with plenty happening in it to boot.
From Ben cheating the job system in a pretty big way at the beginning and fighting a duel to him starting a riot and threatening a god, with him going to deal with some unruly students and finally plundering the depths of the archive from there, only to find some greater secrets within, a lot has happened these last 50ish chapters and on the whole I'd say I'm pretty satisfied with them. I liked them and I had fun writing them.
But as with any time I do one of these little personal arc reviews, I've gotta look at where I think I could have improved and on that front I'd say it falls squarely on Thera's story with Insia. While I did have fun with it and had been planning the reveal that another one of the great spirits had secretly had another child all the way back since the second arc, I feel like my execution was lacking there. The build up could have used a lot more work to be sure and could use a bit of tweaking here and there to make it a bit more fun.
Juggling A and B plots in general is something I want to aim to be a bit better at when I'm doing that sort of thing but like so much else it's going to come down to practice, but in the end the most important thing of all is how you guys felt about and my greatest hope is that it managed to be something fun as we move into the next arc tomorrow so hope you all look forward to that and enjoy what's to come and from there, as always have an excellent one!

I think it was a great way to end the arc. Now I am ready to get back to the usual shenanegans from Ben.

2024-01-08 22:12:34 +0000 UTCI'm actually really concerned that the author isn't pointing that out as a weak spot in the story. The India parts were fine, whatever, but the parts that got a backlash weren't even worth mentioning? This one is teetering for me on my Patreon list, it may be time to see if there's another story I'm excited about.

2024-01-08 18:25:21 +0000 UTCAt some point I wonder if we are looking at the story and Ben/Thera`s behavior from the wrong angle. The reality check you mentioned is from our perspective of society we have. In a world where your power and worth is literally is measured by the innate system and world might just end if you aren't individually strong enough might change peoples perspectives. They are doing everything they can to get stronger and wealth and powerful forces are causing them issues. To survive they cant show mercy. Like how Vikings used to keep psychopathy people in their society and direct their aggression towards the enemy. Like necessary evil I guess. Ben and Thera has shown to be outcast from the start and their behaviors falling under societal standards seems unlikely in the first place.

2024-01-08 12:54:10 +0000 UTCBen has been relying too much on Thera for that so I agree. Just carrying potent potions with him might have solved the issue without him needing to materialize stuff.

2024-01-08 12:37:34 +0000 UTCI personally enjoyed the arc— Insia’s story was exactly what I was hoping for. I do think we’re maybe starting to reach the point where Ben and Thera might both need a reality check on the responsibility for good conduct that comes with immense power, but that’s a fun thing to anticipate on its own. Also, I’m verrry much looking forward to the moment when Thera realizes that there’s one more spirit child out there.

2024-01-07 23:43:01 +0000 UTCI liked everything except the student part in the arc. Insia's plot worked for me and the duel in the beginning was very cathartic. But I'd like to say a bit negative about students part as well. Miscommunication is always infuriating, especially when it could be easily solved. Some series (ex: Wheel of Time) are built around miscommunications and a lot of readers are whining about it, even now. Since this is a web serial, we're forced to remain with frustration instead of binging to resolution or even skipping parts (like some readers often do when they don't want to deal with such things). All of that to say, I really hope to never see such blatant miscommunication with Ben again. Between his connect and the gods, it's only possible with forced and implausible set of circumstances. Honestly, that Ben didn't read their minds before they even said anything is still unbelievable to me. And then Ben turning into a sadist in the second part was perhaps in-character, but still revolting. I'm talking specifically about Zallith, the other two got what they deserved, but he was abused and humiliated basically for being stupid. Ben is usually restrained from such things by society and his friends, and I hope these restrains will remain in the future. (Hoping for Ben to get empathy to jerks is probably too much...) A couple things that were forgotten or that I hoped for: 1) Nare asked Ben to bring his skill library, so I assume he copied it and left for them, but there's no mentions of it. 2) Ben didn't talk to students about cheating stat growth with masochistic enchantments, which is a pity. 3) We heard a lot about them working or making something (and failing), but not a single concrete example of enchantments. 4) Ben asked Nare about renting a forge to fulfill his quotas, but then basically took a holiday from them. Still, all that said, a decent arc and it did inspire many emotions in me and others, which I suppose is the point. EDIT to add: Xilly didn't try cursing Ben! I really thought that awakened curse magic + Ben's luck = a chance for Ben to flex his resistances. Talk about subverting expectations...

2024-01-07 21:30:06 +0000 UTCI just feel like the priest did nothing but dislike someone and not blindly trust his own gods opinion, which I don't think warrants that much punishment. Not insisting Xilly heal him was a step too much and I do think deserving of punishment but not spending one subjective year in a mind prison while getting stomped on.
Rui Lourenço
2024-01-07 21:23:41 +0000 UTCRegarding the priest, on one hand he didn't and couldn't have done anything regarding Ben's near death event. On the other, he directly contributed to the two students having increasingly negative reactions to Ben against his own God's wishes to the point that he definitely didn't *help* when Xilly was being asked to help prevent Ben from dying. The internal bleeding was a bit much probably, but compared to Ben he wasn't actively prevented from receiving treatment and wasn't going to die within two minutes. Being a footstool was humiliating yes, but conversely Ben was treated like absolute shit due to some rumors and against Nare's wishes and as the High Priest of Nare I feel like he should have had Nare's interests in mind over rumors and how *other* Gods were treated? *Especially* given Ben's status as an Apostle? Like, people usually treat Ben's Apostle status *super* seriously so to see that not get mentioned at all this time around was a little weird to be honest? Anyway, Ben definitely wasn't the bigger man by the end of this, but damn if he didn't *try* in the face of bigotry and bullshit all up until his life was literally on the line. Getting some payback is just to be expected from Ben at that point considering his character.
Thomas Keller
2024-01-07 21:14:24 +0000 UTCAs someone that just binged the whole thing, I think the foreshadowing worked and is sufficient. With Incendis being part of the discussion on making new half spirits and then being consistently discribed as missing from any gatherings, and then the reveal when they went to get Ben's creepy clones from Viv, I think it was fairly well set up. Anything more and it would've been outright stated. As for the rest of the arc, I just think his mistreatment of the high priest was too much. The priest didn't even do anything that wrong and couldn't have saved him so it was way too petty to have him as a footstool and repeatedly physically abuse him to the point of internal bleeding.
Rui Lourenço
2024-01-07 20:52:11 +0000 UTCA way to do the foreshadowing might have been to show Insedis traveling to/arriving at the volcano, or maybe his first meeting with his wife, though now that I think about it, it might be better from his wife’s perspective.

2024-01-07 20:25:19 +0000 UTCI kinda feel the same. The whole duel with the spurned lover thing was amusing and vindicating as Ben revealed that he isn't harmless anymore and the guy deserved it. But for this teaching arc while I kinda understand that Ben was spitefull and was doing it both to help them grow and test his teaching capabilities, the the whole footrest was very petty in my mind at the begginning, and with the added kicks turned into a bit of torture-porn which could have been done without.

2024-01-07 19:53:09 +0000 UTCI liked this arc a lot, but I will also admit, the pre-reveal part of the arc was STRESSFUL and once the reveal did happen, Ben's sadism and spite towards the only person there who couldn't really defend themselves was a black spot on good writing. I want to like Ben. I -need- to like Ben because part of the premise of the story is his relationship with the world around him. When he turns into an asshole no better than the people who "mistreat" him, then I lose sympathy, and desire to read.
Silverias
2024-01-07 19:42:48 +0000 UTCSo since Ben is technically an awakened mage now, shouldn't he expect a visit from Zandale as well? He really should exploit him of everything he can. Like the Coordination of Thera who might combine with his Fine motor control, a vision enhancement that seem very usefull and which he said he desired. On the subject he should try to have more sensory magic to have his minds get busy with. Like Clairvoyance or some sort or Scan magic if it exist which could really help him push his material manipulation and Knowledge. I also wonder if telekinesis would be interesting since Material manipulation kinda reproduce it even if as less range. Finally Myriad talked of several mind skill when he got Complex mind: Parallel though and Split though, and he only went to learned the first.

2024-01-07 19:01:55 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter! I really enjoyed the beginning of this arc though I have to say the early student chapters remain some of my least favorite in the entire story - it probably wouldn't be as bad to read all at once, but they just were infuriating. Not too mention that the entire situation was basically a giant misunderstanding due to lack of communication and information - and Nare who could have resolved it conveniently disappeared for the first time in the story, completely unavailable. It had also been previously mentioned that Ben unconsciously scans the minds of the people around him, yet he suddenly stopped doing so when he met the students, just to make sure the misunderstanding wouldn't be resolved. Really looking forward to what comes next though :D

2024-01-07 18:18:19 +0000 UTCGreat story. This is my favorite story... so nominal thoughts here.... with Ben near bleeding out.... hard to imagine he couldn't have materialized. A clamp and clamped off his artery... with all his knowledge on everything. Last, hard to think he would leave something as important as healing out of his repertoire going forward in light of almost dying this time to something so simple.

2024-01-07 18:15:29 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter. This arc sure had a lot . Some parts were touch and go and some were really enjoyable. Overall a good arc.
