November Monthly Illustration

Thanks for your patience on this, sweet patrons!  I have to admit I was sort of dreading doing this illustration (because I left it until the last minute), but this turned out being really rewarding to draw, and frankly one of my favorite pieces I've ever made.  The subject matter is completely random; there's no particular intended meaning but I hoped it would be an interesting group of things.

Since this was done in colored pencil instead of my usual ink, I took a few process pictures:

Below is my sketch.

After I'm happy with my sketch, I go over everything with a kneaded eraser.  I'm basically trying to reduce the sketch to a very light framework so that the sketchy lines can guide me without being distracting in the final piece.

Then, I create line-work and start shading.  I wanted the shadows somewhat flat, as I was not aiming for this to look realistic.  I knew I wanted to color this piece digitally so that the shading would be overlayed onto digital color.

And a closeup of the final shading.  I then scanned the piece, put this layer on multiply, and added color behind it.  Voila!
