I know, I know, it's Thursday! I had to push this back a day in order to get the stickers out a few days early this month (in the hopes they'll get there in ample time for your Halloween sticker needs). Please... forgive me 😔
This is another one of my Inktober alternative illustrations. My bowl of chance gave me "Youth" "Gathering" and "Torn" this time. After some sketching, I decided I wanted to depict a ritual of youths tearing cloth. I imagined this as an opening ceremony for some kind of festival.
As promised, here are a few more process pictures. Below are my sketches, including the very loose doodles I do to come up with ideas (sorry about the stamp impressions; I was getting rid of excess ink on the other side of the paper). Sometimes I do free word association if I'm having trouble coming up with ideas, hence the list of random words.

Here's my lightbox setup! I printed out my tight sketch on 11x17 paper and transferred it on to bristol.

Below is the initial tracing, which I then lightly erase with a kneaded eraser so the pencil lines are less distracting while I ink.

Inking in process! Much like the last piece, I use brush first for most of the line-work and then go in with pointed pen for small details.

Here is a look at the wet ink wash for the oak tree. I always enjoy painting trees because I can be a bit looser with my brushwork and let the ink do its thing.

I didn't many pictures of the wash in progress because frankly its pretty boring to look at. Instead, here's a picture of the girls in the bottom left finished. The line art ended up looking a bit light after the wash was applied, so I went over it again with my pen hand added a few details in the fabric. I used the same process for the boys.

And that's it! I probably wont post any more progress pictures this month, as they'll all be pretty much the same. Feel free to ask any questions if you have them!
