Hello there! I come bearing art!
In lieu of inktober, I'm doing something a bit different this year. I wrote down about 30 evocative words on a sheet of paper, cut them into strips, folded them up, and put them in a cup (Colin added a few words as well). On October first, I randomly pulled three words: Overgrown, Carving, and Silent. My goal was to make a black & white dreamlike fantasy illustration based on those three words, and the results are above.
Below is my sketch, along with a few other thumb-nailed ideas. I typically do a small tight sketch on printer paper, scan it, print it at the final illustration size, and then lightbox trace the sketch onto bristol.

Below is a picture of the line-art in progress. I used a brush for the majority of this piece, and pointed pen for a few smaller details. I believe I had only used brush at the point this picture was taken.

And finally, here is a view of the ink-wash in progress. This part can be really tedious as it requires a lot of light layers to build deep values. I decided to concentrate my efforts first on the fireplace, mainly to boost my own morale (it was fun to draw) and to give my eye an anchor so it didn't bounce off the drawing as I tried to paint it. I find that trying to work the whole piece at once, light to dark, can get confusing as the process wears on.

This is my first time posting work in progress pictures! If you guys find it interesting, I'll try to keep doing it and take nicer photos next time. Let me me know!
My goal is to do about 6 of these during the month of October. Realistically I will probably end up doing... less than that.... but I'll try my best!
