Here's a somewhat serious and spooky sounding part in an other wise happy and silly song. Why did we throw such a curveball into here? Because we like to have fun!
Pro Tips:
The logical place to begin is with the left hand chords. Take some time to memorize these:
--0--0--0--0--0----
--0--0--0--0--6----
--x---x--x--x---7---
--2--4--5--7--8---
---------------------
---------------------
--0---0---0---0---4----3----3----
--6---6---6---6---4----4----3----
--7---7---7---7---5----5----4----
--0---x----x---5---6----5----5----
-------7---8-------------3----5----
-------------------------------3----
Once you have the chord shapes down, you can start arpeggiating them as in indicated in the full TAB. Arpeggiating means you play the notes of a chord separate instead of together.
Alternate pick, make sure every note rings out well, and wash your hands!
Theory Talk:
This one is weird, so buckle up!
The section starts on an E minor chord, and the bottom note of the chord ascends the first 4 notes of the corresponding E minor scale (E - F# - G - A).
This final root note, A, resolves upward a semitone in measure 3 to Bb major. Bb major is built on the tritone of the previous chord, E minor. For those of you who aren't already aware - a tritone means an interval (distance) of 6 frets above the root note and is exactly halfway between the root at its octave. It's often called the Devil's interval because it sounds so sinister. Playing a tritone during medieval times was taboo. In 2020, it's finally cool. Thanks Black Sabbath. 😎
Bb major happens to be the bVI chord of a D minor scale, so it sounds quite natural moving up to a D minor chord in measure 5.
D minor also moves down to its own tritone (Ab major) on measure 7.
Ab major chord is the bVI chord of C minor, so we resolve up to that on measure 9.
The C minor then moves down to its V chord in measure 11 - G major.
The sequence is now complete. If you followed along, you deserve a sticker!
TAB is attached as a PDF and Guitar Pro. Enjoy, Tup Tups!
