Blending Vanities - Part 02

“Don’t be stupid.” Jenna groaned, her brows knitting together as she scanned the book. The vellum was mottled, with an almost oily sheen coating the page. “Nicki just reads this shit and…” The brunette spun her free hand in space, whistling a rising tone. “…poof. Stuff happens.” 

Maisie rolled her eyes, shifting her weight to one leg. “It cannot possibly be that simple.” She groaned. “Like, science stuff usually needs more than that right? Like you got to actually do something?” 

“Shut up! I have to concentrate.” Jenna huffed. “And it’s magic remember, not science.” Frowning again, she twisted the book before her. “Ugh, the fonts…like…all smudged…Whatever, here goes nothing…” Taking a deep breath, her friend let out a slow breath and placed her finger on the page. A glint of green and blue light seemed to leap off the page like a flame.

The Nobles coronet, shining in the night, calls us to the banquet.

Two simple souls, with all their might, beseech thee for their goals.

Maisie and Jenna ask the aether for beauty fitting the court. 

Prekrasne prazne lutke!”

Dragging her finger along the page as she followed the incantation. Jenna’s eyes widening as energy arced along the aged book and up Jenna’s arms. Maisie watched in amazement as the light shifted to a bright pinkish white, finally erupting in a cyclone of sparks rising from within the centre of the page. Flecks of pink light crashed into Maisie’s skin, seeming to sink deep through her body. Jenna batted at some embers coating her chest, causing the book to topple from her arms. 

The tome landed with a heavy crash, despite the carpet beneath their feet. Blinking in confusion Maisie watched the text of the spell shimmer as the magical light faded from sight. The only sound in the room came from Jenna’s ragged breathing. 

She saw her friends’ bare toes wriggling against the fabric, Jenna’s hands rubbing her hips. The taller woman lifted a hand to her head, scratching her temple. “Well…” Jenna said finally. “…that…was certainly something…”
