Catelyn, a prodigious witch, scrambled through the sudden darkness. She thought her spell had been a perfect invocation, but something had clearly gone awry. Two thuds against the wooden floor had all but confirmed her error, the sound of her boots dropping to the floor, punctuating her rapid transformation.
She dragged her suddenly naked body against the wood, her only guide a faint emerald glow, flickering candlelight and the sound of her fey-familiar, Lily.
"That's it, master - follow the sound of my voice." Came the pixie's lilting tone, however, even as Catelyn scrambled heard a nuanced glee in the fey's voice.
Catelyn angrily found herself at the brim of her now enormous hat and lifted it with some effort, staring up at... a much taller pixie, and a much larger den.
"Lily!" The dwindled witch's tone impatient and bitter. "Don't just stand there gawking, get down here and... and fly me back up to my desk! Clearly I... I made a mistake!"
The now taller pixie looked down at her embarrassed master. "You sure did, master." The honorific dripping with sarcasm. "I told you that particular tome held magic forbidden to mortals, that only the most powerful of mages could ever hope to master its secrets..."
Catelyn was about to respond, when suddenly she made a disturbing deduction...
Which Lily confirmed. "And I just knew you'd take the bait."
The witch was aghast, her familiar had tricked her?!
Lily laughed gleefully, with all the capriciousness of her fey-blood. "The egos on you humans... maybe this will help get the size of yours in check."
Catelyn slammed a balled fist against the wood. "When I'm done with you, I'll use your soul as a battery, Lily!"
The pixie just snickered. "Oh, I think you'll find your arcane might dwindled too, sweetie. Oh! And the best part it is... that spell is still going!"
Catelyn froze. 'W-What?!"
"Ah-huh!" Lily smiled broadly. "You should end up small enough so I can have you in the palm of my hand... I think its your turn to try being a familiar, little Catelyn!"
The still-shrinking witch realized she could feel the hat getting heavier, her knees dragging against the grain of the wood.
The pixie put her hands on her hips, glad her 'service' was finally at an end. "I did warn you, master, when you summoned me - the fey are not to be bound. Mortals, on the other hand..."
The increasingly imposing Lily watched with delight as the witch got smaller and smaller...
