Jenna had hit the jackpot.
She worked as a thief and was always on the lookout for new marks. Whilst travailing some usual circles online, she found a few threads that pointed to an old estate called Crescentwood Manor. By all accounts, the owners were extremely wealthy, lived on the edge of a small town and were barely at home! It definitely had a mysterious edge, and no matter how hard Jenna searched, she couldn't find any trace of the owners themselves - just a few references to a family name, 'Quinn'.
It was only the next state over as well. If Jenna could get inside while they were away, there was surely something priceless in there that she could relieve the Quinn family of.
Everything had been going to plan, she had been in contact with a few residents in town to figure out if anyone was at home - a few of them spoke of that place like it was haunted, but Jenna wasn't so easily perturbed.
Just as she expected, when Jenna finally made her way there. It was empty.
Annoyingly empty though... She had expected heirlooms, jewellery, anything she could make a killing off. Instead, she had found a few potential things here and there, but it was far from the treasure trove she had expected. Especially disappointing given just how sprawling this manor seemed, at points Jenna was convinced this house was bigger on the inside.
What was more, there were more than a few oddities around as well. A closet with an array of clothing of varied styles and sizes, complete with a shoe collection with just as much variety. There were a few doors that seemed sealed shut, Jenna decided she'd come back to those. As far as she could tell, the thief felt that either one person lived here or two dozen people did.
It was then as she walked through a long, empty hallway that she saw a way into an attic. Hoping there was something to justify all this work, the thief pulled a cord and revealed the stairs, wandering into the gloom above.
This area was just as strange. Boxes, children's toys, a gramophone, a guitar? Who the hell were these people. She was about to leave when her torch landed on a stool at the end of the room, and on it was a single sheet of paper.
Suddenly curious, the thief approached, and it printed was short message in large text.
"What the hell..." Jenna said to herself.
On the page, was written:
'Silent as whispers, I swing and sway
A phantom of grace, an elegant display
The hearts I enchant are sure to gleam
Can you guess my name, as I float like a dream
In riddle's realm, beware your reply
For stilled fates, this riddle belies
If wrong you stand on the stage's floor
Face the spotlight's gaze, forevermore.'
Jenna groaned. "I suck at riddles. What the hell is this even doing here?" The thief shrugged and was about to turn away when she felt amused by the strange find. "What, like, a singer?" She said to herself.
As the woman spoke her answer out loud, the house itself shuddered in response...
