Lighting Tests

Something free for all you tinies and giants.

Given the support I'm receiving via you lovely patrons, I want to keep improving my content. Part of that is improving my lighting work - you might have noticed me trying to be more sophisticated in this area as time has gone on!

As a result, I was tinkering with some simple 'beauty shots' if you will, to get a stronger handle on lighting as it's an area I don't have formal training in!

The only post work I did to these was add the backgrounds in photoshop, no other values have been altered. <3

How do we like the results? Which one is your fav? Do you folks like seeing this kind of stuff? Maybe these would make cute desktop wallpapers for those so inclined - let me know if any of these end up on your devices! :>

Oooh. Whatcha like about it?

Ivana

Great idea! And thank you - I was pleased with these. I definitely want to do more...

Ivana

Also, the 2nd one is my favorite, mostly due to the outfit.

Nice tests! The lighting game is hard. I REALLY wish they were posing with the ruler in at least one of the shots, maybe for future tests? :D

These are so fun! Jenna's a wonderful model. They're ridiculously impressive, adds so much depth and character to these renders!

Nicole Corcoran

I appreciate the advice. I definitely need to spend some time playing around with lighting.

Baulderstone

I've been playing around with distant lights, point lights, and spots recently a. I find little proof of concepts like Iva posted above are the perfect bite-sized projects to cut one's teeth on.

Very kind of you to say!! And feel free to let me know if you want any tips or advice!

Ivana

Thank you so much!!

Ivana

I love it u did a good job

I wouldn't consider that cheating at all. While I am new to Daz, I've spent a lot of time playing with Photoshop (and Pixelmator, my current favorite). I fully understand the challenge of matching subjects and backgrounds. I'll take your "cheating" over all the images where someone just slapped down a Daz figure over a photo with not thought to lighting. I have a shrinking scene I'm working on where I am happy with the pose, but haven't found a good way to light it yet. I'll see about actually doing a proper render of the thing today to share with you.

Baulderstone

It’s her in all three but you’re still right - such a cutie!

Ivana

I really like the first one. Jenna is just gorgeous! :3

Lloyd26

Thanks! This was mainly about improving my lighting and experimentation but I really like the first too!

Ivana

Oh I'd love to see your work sometime! And thanks so much - I guess I 'cheated' a bit there in that I chose the lights in DAZ then searched the net for an image that felt like it suited!

Ivana

I muddling through learning Daz3d at the moment, so I am very interested in seeing your test work. You did a great job in the second one of matching the orange light in the background to the light on her left side. The first one is my favorite for pose and composition

Baulderstone

Thanks so much! Very glad you like them - and that could be a good idea! You seem to enjoy the one offs. They are fun to make!

Ivana

These look fantastic! I love the ruler acting as a bit of reference for scale. I wouldn't mind seeing more proof-of-concept test renders. Stuff that sits in that middle ground of I did this to learn or on a lark, and it looks good but doesn't necessarily have a short story behind it. Maybe place them under your old Under The Table Tag. I'm a supporter of anything that brings more shrinking art into the world ^^.
