One good way to tell the difference would be to listen to lots of different words that all end in "un" - like fun, sun, pun, undone, stun, etc. Then compare with lots of words that rhyme with "an" - like can, Japan, scan, van, began, etc. I just attached an mp3 file to this post so you can listen to me pronounce and contrast these words! Here's what I say in the file: Ran: can, fan, van, scan, began, Japan, ran.
