scrap - black fill

I've always liked how the drawing looks when you turn off the line layer and are just left with the fill.
It's not a style conducive to the content I like to make, but still.
Has anyone read any Tim Sale stuff? If you've not heard of him, visually he's like Frank Miller if Frank Miller was all that.
The draftsmanship is often quite rough, but darned if it doesn't come together in a way that sings. Catwoman: When in Rome is exquisite.
Anyway. I should have the next page up either tomorrow or the day after. It took me a little while to find the style, but I'm there now.

I couldn't agree more. Although there are other factors. Not all styles are suited to just any brand of content, and a bad draftsman/colourist pairing can bring down the work of both artists.

I love Tim Sale's work in Long Halloween and Dark Victory. It's very stylized, like his impossibly long Batman ears (which I love). Often I'd rather have an artist who has a unique style, even if it's not perfectly clean, than someone who draws things realistically but with little panache. It's why I don't really like Jason Fabok's artwork despite it being very impressive technically.

Tim Sale is indeed good. It's one of those artists that might not have incredible over the top pencil skills, but they have so much eye and gusto that, to use your perfect words, it all comes together and sings. Spider-Man Blue is one gorgeous example. The man has style

After the draft is done, I split the final inks into two layers. One is the lines, the which defines the shape of things, the other is the fill layer (what you're seeing here). I guess the fill layer is technically part of the rendering process, but since some of that rendering is done with pure black, it plus the line layer are what you would consider the 'inking'.

I am not an artist but I am fascinated by how it is done...so, in this one did you take off the equivalent of old comic "pencils" or remove the line art and leave the "inking" ?

Very reminiscent of Miller's work, especially in things like 300 and The Dark Knight Returns. Cool.
