104. a better world is possible

hey y'all! I hope you enjoy this episode~ it's a lot of rambling about current stuff going on in my day to day (health insurance annoyances, Ares finally got his appendix out, some dnd stuff, drawing bodies is hard), and it's capped off by my thoughts re: the overwhelming desire to doomscroll/doompost, and the Big Despair that always threatens to consume us all. very casual stuff this episode ;-)

I fear it gets a bit preach-y/soapbox-y, and I'm sorry for that, but I really am speaking from the heart!! and being entirely earnest about all this ;; and I hope it resonates with you in some way xx

I really appreciate you cheyenne !! šŸ–¤ u speaking up about real human dealings in a rly refreshing n’ honest kinda way, its always so impacting!! tanks for being a caring softie! I’ve been telling myself lately that ā€œcommunity is everythingā€ šŸ–¤ I too believe in a better world, despite the odds n’ elitist aims for furthering separation… thanks for the encouraging chat <3

I absolutely loved your message in this and it really is so true! Focusing on our own little pockets and finding joy and goodness around us is all we can do, and there’s an abundance of it. If we’re beaten down we can’t help anyone or ourselves and that might be where some people in power want us. A saying I think of a lot is ā€œwhatever you focus on expandsā€. I want the connection and joy to expand not the despair!

Love what you have to say here, its stuff ive been thinking about a lot especially with the election and all the fear in the air. I'm a firm believer that focusing on what I can control and giving myself and loved ones compassion makes a difference. Despair is isolating. Remembering to start small with the people around us, leaning on each other, facing shit together, and creating small joy and light does make a difference. Why? because our joy matters. Our small worlds make up the greater whole. Every bit of compassion and connection counts. (also, glad to hear your recent vids have done well! I personally love the "mundane" videos. Seeing other people live their lives and share it with others brings me joy)

What you said at the end was important and people need to hear it!! Don’t apologise for speaking from the heart

Thank you for what you said at the end Chey <33

Heya! I very rarely have a full keyboard when I listen to your posts, but between actually being at my desk for once (huzzah) and the topic of this one I figured I'd stop in. I'm a relatively new listener, but for what it's worth I have really liked everything that I know you've put out into the world. It's cathartic to hear from someone with a lot of the same values who is just trying to do their best every day--and that that can look different depending on the day, and that's ok! You'd do this anyway, but keep being you =) The little, daily actions to do what I can really are the sort of small magic I grew up believing in as a child raised on Ghibli movies and Tamora Pierce books. Not just the epic quests, but also the quieter moments, like having pride in resuscitating an old oven and baking a herring pot pie =P I'm not sure if you watched Twitch Plays Pokemon when it first aired (over a decade ago? eek!) in 2014, but I think it really is the perfect microcosm of the universe. The entire internet came together and persisted to complete the game despite a plethora of junk input from bots and scripts, Bloody Sunday, jumping over ledges, and setback after setback. Despite all of this, we continued to make positive progress one slow step at a time. There's a lot to clean up in today's world, but it's still in some ways much farther than we've ever been...just also louder because of the number of people and difference in scale. There's a lot of contention, and a lot that needs to heal. There will always be setbacks, and in return we must continue to move. Find, present, and model better alternatives to what we can't abide by. And the best place to ground for making positive movement is often those same little magics--being with found/family, creating, volunteering, or maybe just laying in bed on a rest day and watching dust motes in sunbeams.

Hello!!! Fellow Seattle artist here! I loved listening to you talk about hope and about realizing the future world you want to live in…it resonated with me so, so much. I think I hit a wall of despair in 2020 (it was bad before, but 2020 broke me), and it pushed me into that spot of ā€œI have to do something. I can’t just feel bad at the internetā€. I've also been getting involved in local grassroots organizing (also been thinking about joining DSA, your friend is inspiring <3) It's been making me feel like I can actually punch back and make a difference. I’ve met so many incredible people, they are all the coolest, and for real, working with them is the closest I’ve ever felt to being in an IRL D&D campaign. It sounds so cheesy, but it’s true. One of the groups I volunteer and work with created a local ballot initiative in 2023. The night the initiative passed and we officially found out that we won we were just sobbing and hugging and yelling…I don’t know if I can describe that feeling–like, WE DID THAT. We are currently in the process of getting our second initiative passed (it’s Prop 1A, Seattle folks have the ballots in their mailboxes literally right now), and it’s for taxing millionaire/billionaire businesses. Alllllll of my rage is just funneled directly into getting this thing done and it makes me feel like I have a tiny piece of power against the super powerful people in this city (that I cannot stand). And I’m still just contributing a tiny, tiny part! Because there are a bunch of us doing this. Even voting on local stuff like this gives me such a rush of hope. Oh yeah, also really love the Persona 5 connection XD My partner and I love that game; and we live our lives to that soundtrack. Right now he’s playing through Metaphor and…idk, I kinda like P5 better XD Also, augggh I'm sorry for how long this is!!! Thank you for your artwork and videos, they are a bright spot in sometimes dark place

This is exactly what I needed to clean my room to! Usually I watch videos of people cleaning/organising/packing/rearranging furniture but always get distracted by watching. And also sometimes I need someone on 'the other end of the line' who is just living their life and chatting to keep me company. And truly, your podcasts were a life saver at the end of 2023 when I was doing the most boring work/internship of all time and needed company in my small, windowless archive, so it's nice to get back to them.

Ava

But YOU!! Have brought so much joy and artfulness and beauty to my life and I love you so dearly ā™”

Faras

you inspire ME to hope!! and to live!! every day. being your friend and knowing you is one of my greatest joys and honors 🄺🄹😭

I love when you get on your soap box! One of the most important messages of our time tbh. For a long time I was Consumed With Despair, and it just made it harder to connect with myself and my gratitude for others. Living in closer alignment with my values made it easier to be in this world. I could ramble on, but I'm just so grateful to you for using your platform to encourage people to Hope.

Oh yeah, practicing new things is scary 100%, even when they're in the same vein as current hobbies 😭 I haven't drawn in YEARS & I can't even imagine drawing things like anatomy and proportioning bodies. I relate bc I'll crochet, try new stitches & feel okay frogging things & all, but knitting???? Terrifying 🤢 It doesn't stop me from picking it up, but it doesn't excite me yet lol I'm SCARED

Amanda

i am SAT and LISTENING INTENTLY
