yes, hello
Added 2020-09-10 20:29:39 +0000 UTCIf you follow my disaster of a twitter, you'll probably note I've been doing video troubleshooting for the past few days.
I think I've mentioned it before, but ever since I started using Vegas in 2013/4, I've been battling minor codec inconveniences. The tl;dr is that my final encode would be VFW x264, which was fine, but Vegas hilariously could not decode its own encode. So to get around this, if I ever needed to work with rendered footage again, I'd just run it through vdub and output it as lagarith.
Pain in the ass? Slightly. But the alternative was spending 3 days trying to figure out a different workflow.
Well, I spent 3 days trying to figure out a different workflow. lol.
tl;dr it looks like, going forward, it's: YV12 Lagarith source > editing in Vegas > upscale/output YV12 Lagarith > Handbrake > YV12 x264 final encode.
This is, somehow, faster than doing the x264 encode in Vegas. Vegas has no issues decoding the stream, either. However, Vegas does crush the blacks because it insists upon expanding the colorspace for some inexplicable reason. So if I ever want to work with archived footage with this workflow, I'd have to address that.
So basically my advice to everyone is to never start working with video or else you will be trapped in an endless nightmare lol
Moving on.
Good news: Last week I spent about 12 hours recording all of the footage I need to finalize the KSP nonsense I've been working on for 18 months!
Bad news: I accidentally recorded 3/4 of it at the wrong resolution, because I forgot to double-check my dxtory settings!
So I have to redo it all, because the source has massive framedrops. The good news is that now I kind of know what I want, so it should be faster. Planning to do that over the weekend.
It did result in this, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZvBBFeZDTs
Next order of business: I've finalized the Kenshi vid. I think. I made some minor changes, because I obsess over details no sane person would ever notice, but I tweaked literally every segment.
This is officially the first output using my new workflow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE-3L1zQqNQ
And finally: I've had Battlefleet Gothic for, I don't know, years. I got it for like $5 on steam sale at some point. For whatever reason, in the past week I felt like playing it. I, uh, have a lot of footage. It's not the sort of thing I'd normally record, but the fact that you can disable the UI and also smash spacebar to run it in bullet time makes it surprisingly photogenic.
I'm not positive anything will come from it, since I've not started sorting through my footage, but my hope is that something cool will emerge. You'll be the first to see it.
Anyway, the world sucks and I know I've been slow again lately, but thanks for sticking with me. It's what motivates me to work on this stuff, and in all honesty that motivation is helping to keep me sane. Or as close to sane as I can manage.
