Milestones!

Welcome aboard everyone new for November, there are quite a few of you.

This month you all came together to hit a big funding milestone: At this point, patreon income is essentially covering my basic living expenses such as rent, utilities, and food, in its entirety!

My expenses have gone up quite a lot this year. I moved into a nicer place, more rent there. My junker car died on me, and the inflated used market pushed me towards getting a brand new car, hello to my first car loan and raised insurance. I also started putting a serious effort into growing my savings this year, so I'm putting extra money aside for investments.

So patreon isn't a catch all income source yet, but you are moving me there steadily! My direct pay from Catalyst Battletech work tops me up from here to the point where this and last year were my first truly financially comfortable ones. I've been able to buy small (and some big) things that I've always held off on. I've lived extremely frugal for years and got myself out from under some serious debt. Now I get to splurge a little. Though my frugal brain still winces haha.

Thank you so much for helping me at all levels.

Now I thought I'd ask for your opinions on a purchase I've considered for quite a while. When doing illustration/sketch work I use a Wacom Intuos 3, which is now a 16 year old product. I think it's time for me to upgrade to a Wacom Cintiq screen.
Most large cintiqs have been in the 21-24in range for screen size, but 3 years ago they dropped a massive 32in model. I'm thinking I keep my art hardware running so long I can get my moneys worth from such a crazy expensive piece of kit. Alternatively, the 24in model is much less expensive, but then I'm not stepping up my screen size, just adding art tablet functionality to it.

Do I go crazy and buy the 32in Cintiq, or keep it modest with a 24in?

Since it’s work related get the best one you can.

Since it's for work, GO BIG!

Kanrei13

Get the 32. Treat yo'self!

If you anticipate using the new one for another 15/16 years, then I’d say the upgrade is worth it.

Richard Jensen

I would buy smart and go with the 24, and you should be able to use the art tablet with it as well.

Indeed. My work motivation has gone up since it stopped being about pure survival and more about getting ahead.

That's really rough! My Dad also recently caught covid and had blood clots in his lungs from it. Luckily blood thinners did the job and he's recovering at home. And thank you for the offer, that is a strong encouragement to go big. I'll keep you updated.

Peripherals, especially those that you use a lot, are a very personal choice. If you know you're getting a quality piece of hardware, get what you feel is the proper balance between what you can afford and what you will use.

You probably won’t regret the 32 in 10 years time if you keep it running. Besides it’s an expense for your livelihood and where you’ll spend a great deal of time, you might as well make it the best work environment for yourself that you can afford.

Andrew Smith

I don’t know much about the hardware you are considering but I do understand ROI. If you think the larger one will make you more productive and last longer. Go for the 32in. It’s sounds like a solid investment

I'm glad to hear you're doing well, it's amazing how much better overall emotional health rises when we feel secure. As for the tablet, if you're calling buying a larger on "going crazy" off the jump you likely know you can't afford it right now. That said, I'm seeing refurbed 32s for basically the price of a 24. Remember to write the expense off for taxes of course!

Money spent on tools for your job is never wasted. if you think the more expensive option provides a better tool, go for it.

Treat yourself to something every now and then. Your worth it to yourself.

Cause assault are slow and get in the way? 🤪

Buy two 24s and ship me one. 😉

Why take a medium, when you can get yourself an assault?

If you go 32”, I’ll remain at my current funding levels for another month… go for it. After the tragedies of COVID taking my Mom last December, and my Dad having a pair of COVID-related Strokes (first Ischemic, then Hemorrhagic) in March (he now lives with me and I being retired Military, can afford to care for him full-time), Life for my Daughters, Dad and I have taken a serious upswing these last 6-months. First and foremost, my Dad’s recovery of much of his mobility and mental faculties. So, case in point, live Life to the fullest. COVID and so much else can lay us low. You were frugal during a Season that required it, rewarded it. Now, celebrate Life and do Good Works where you can. As I am. Steve “Prussian Havoc” Stroble

Yeah that's definitely an area where I loosen up my frugalness. While I try to stay reasonable, I always avoid buying cheap items when the goal is to use them for years.

Anthony Scroggins

My old man was always frugal - but so frugal he'd struggle with cheap tools when he could afford better. The lesson I took from that was to always buy the best tools you can afford. Go for the bigger tablet. It'd be worse to use the other one and wish you'd gone big.

Andrew Dickinson

Congrats from my side as well and wishing all the best and even better income to the way to financial freedom for you! I'd go for the 24 inch. It sounds reasonable and ok and when you did generate more income can eventually change to some better equipment later.

Henning Boessler

hahaha

Anthony Scroggins

It's more like $1700 vs $2800. I'd buy from the refurb store. A big downside to wacom stuff is their retail price doesn't really drop, so I can't expect the 32in to get cheaper until they release something better, and I doubt that's coming any time soon. There are endless used intuos tablets, but few people sell their cintiq.

Anthony Scroggins

24 would certainly be enough, but the $1000 more for the 32 wont feel too bad over a decade of use. I currently work on a 27in screen, definitely wouldn't be able to stomach going to down 16 haha.

Anthony Scroggins

32 it's closer to the meaning of everything.

Id go 32 inch. Years of frugality should be celebrated. Of course I don’t know what your margin is.

Jakob Fredensborg

I would recommend buying the 24 in. If i checked the prices correctly the 32in is at least 3 times more expensive... I would also recommend upgrading to a 32 in when the prices are a good chunk lower. if you dont wait another 16 years, you could sell the 24in to get some of the investment back.

Congrats on the financial goals! I've got the 24", it feels more than enough. Opted for the touch version for natural canvas adjusting, but that may feed into my bad habit of zooming too much. 32" is more of a luxury or if you want alot of refs on the same screen. I've got a new 16" mobilestudio to sell for under market if youd want to consider it.
