Cicada Concept Sketch

Here's one some might be looking forward to, the Cicada.

This design went through several stages of iteration and ended up being a very collaborative piece between Alan Blackwell and I to get it there. Of the final result the legs are mostly his work while the torso is mostly mine.

I really wanted the body shape of a real cicada pushed as it has been in some of the older art, particularly the CCG art, rather than going a super blocky route. Though some of that blockiness was mandated back in. The end result is quite nice I think.

This was my favorite ride in MWO at one point, pre-clan before things got too lethal for such a large hit and run machine.

I love it, there's something about the MWO one that repels me. Like a disgruntled toaster on weird legs. As a huge Locust fan I can finally say I have a medium mech upgrade once this mini is out.

Fherot

I think some variants may have arm guns, but the stock mech doesn't, so we're showing that here.

Anthony Scroggins

I always liked this mech, but for mediums a dervish or blackjack are my number 1 picks. I never really found out but it looks like record sheets with the arm guns was wrong?

Andrew McKenna

The first time I looked at this I thought the legs were to big. This time it just looks right.

Hhmm, apologies then, I could have sworn those were SRM ports instead of hands, and twin LRM ports on the side torsos. Ah well. Here's hoping we see that Quickdraw here sooner rather than later then, eh?

Malintus

I’d agree with that. Becomes a popularity contest and all the uglies get left behind but some of those are pretty classic and could maybe become more popular if redesigned and easily accessible in plastic

Andrew Smith

angle matters. Definitely a Quickdraw, the shoulders are hiding the antenna. And proportions are subject to change on redesigns.

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

I still have to disagree with this as a business model. Short term? Grand. Long term? You end up trying to sell a Kickstarter of ALL bads, by the end of things, and that probably ain't gonna fly. Less popular choices need to be salted throughout each batch, simply because realistically that is the only way they WILL get funded.

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

More 40-toners please! Hermès II, Whitworth (please keep the head (forehead?) mounted ML centerlined please. It’s iconic.

Burning Chrome

The new (proper) Sentinel is a bit of perfection isn’t it? I also felt like this rendition looked taller as well. Might be the angle of the artwork and the legs being more prominent? Still say the MLS were in the arms in the original artwork and it got screwed up with the crit locations like so many things. Even the original mini had arm mounted MLs. Was cool to run past an enemy and “flip arms…or stubby wing/turret-thingy” and fire MLs into them while still having a usually excellent escape vector if initiative was against u the following turn. That’s how Cicadas were at our table back then anyways…🙂

Burning Chrome

Dervish doesn't have fists. Also, the artist who did that piece confirmed it was a Quickdraw.

Jarod DePastene

No, I don't think it's a Quickdraw, proportions look off. Plus, it lacks the iconic antenna poking out the sides of the head. I'm certain that jumping Mech is actually a Dervish.

Malintus

Well, for one, we certainly don't need the Rakhshasa... in fact, there's plenty of mechs better off forgotten....

Jarod DePastene

I had a look-see, and that is DEFINITELY a Quickdraw.... :)

Jarod DePastene

The Battletech "Coming Releases" page has been updated and the artwork shows several of the newly designed Mechs shown here (Ostroc, Griffin IIC, Locust IIC, Caesar, Assassin). There's also a jumping Mech in the background of the first image for Empire Alone.. could be a Quickdraw. We'd need something to compare it with.. such as an official Quickdraw concept sketch ?

TIM STRAUVEN

You and your team never disappoint. Hopefully, we'll see a Quickdraw, soon?

Jarod DePastene

Some of the redesigned mechs won’t be released as plastic as I understand it but they 3D models will be sent to iron wind to then make into metal minatures and released on a smaller scale…I believe.

Andrew Smith

"I personally think said mechs should be a straight to IWM project." Do you mean they should be redesigned by IWM, or are you saying there's a chance that these will somehow be made in plastic?

Carlos Sempere

I wonder what the Imp would look like? *nudge nudge* ;)

Joe Wright

Thanks Anthony! Yeah those clan wolf mechs are certainly the less popular of the omni mechs.

Andrew Smith

If that's the case, Rifleman IIC soon please.

Kanrei13

While a mech desperately needing a revamp is a consideration, general community popularity of a mech is probably the biggest deciding factor along with how common a mech is in lore. After all, the mechs need to sell, so they either need to be popular or necessary. More obscure mechs, no matter how needing, are unlikely to be hit soon if at all. I personally think said mechs should be a straight to IWM project.

Anthony Scroggins

I hate being that guy…but I’ll be that guy lol. Is there any chance the Naga phantom and the Pouncer on the list of mechs coming down the pipe? I think they all look terrible in their original design and really need an update. As a clan wolf completionist I need these mechs lol. Love the cicada! Yet another mech I was never a fan of but now can’t wait to get my hands on

Andrew Smith

Please no haha.

Anthony Scroggins

The weapons existing is always a nice feature :D

Anthony Scroggins

Speed, armor, and armament of the Locust for twice the weight and cost.

Kanrei13

wait... you let someone else touch my 40 tonners?!?!?!?! *makes angry Assassin non noises*

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

I like the sleeker profile. The "lunch box" on legs was good.. but I like the "modernization" of the chassis.

Scott

I like it, when it gets to the 3d phase I would love to see it next to the locust, and so 6 more mechs and you will have all the mechs from combat manual Mercs! LOL

Robert Moore

Im loving these new minis but ive got a list and im gonna need you guys to go back to the start and do all the mechs in order of manufacture date. (GIB ALL THE MECHS)

*ANGRY CICADA NOISES*

Joe Wright

Nah, this is the standard, small laser in the CT, medium laser in each side torso

Malintus

Looks decent but if it's the ppc variant I feel like it's gun is a bit undersized.

Charles Lubanje

I always liked the old miniature; it made me think that FASA had grabbed one of its Star Trek ships and glued legs on it. It looked more that way from the top, like a delta wing with a raised centerline, and its bulk was obscured. Some of that has changed here, but hey, it looks great. I'll miss the aggressively inset cockpit and the "gills" that suggested an oversized engine. But these legs are well proportioned, the weapons actually exist, and the detailing's lovely. I'll turn my first one into a St. Ives Academy Training Group -3C, probably sticking the leg MGs in the hip piece.

Carlos Sempere

Buzz buzz. Very nice update there

Alex F

That’s a serious improvement! Well done!

Jakob Fredensborg

Bug mechs, best mechs. ❤️

Jordan G Roberts

(one of) The ugly duckling (s) ain't so ugly any more! Not quite as drastic an overhaul as say the Sentinel, but probably didn't need so much. I like it a lot. Seems to stand a bit taller than the older versions?
