Glass Spider Comparison

Sorry for getting all the ancient Galahad fans hopes up by calling the Glass Spider a Galahad haha. I tend to gravitate towards a mechs shorter/easier/cooler name when possible, I don't stick to one convention or another. (eg: Behemoth is cooler and easier said than Stone Rhino).

With my own described visual comparisons to the Rifleman in mind, and yours, now that we have the model of the mech readied for lineart generation, I thought it'd be fun to put it side by side with our Rifleman model.
I think the results are cool. The resemblance is definitely there, but in the scope of all the mechs we're covering I think there's enough difference going on. Much more different than say, the Wasp and Stinger.
Not a single detail is the same, they just follow a similar set of main shape proportion ideas.

I feel like many of our more recent designs have backed off a bit on the detail levels. Do you like the cleaner surfaces, or do you prefer us going all out packing interesting details onto the mechs. Some like the Timber Wolf and Executioner are absolutely packed with cool detail. It can be a little hard to keep those creative bits flowing and unique in an ongoing production line setting.

Beautiful Glass Spider - it kind of usurps the Rifleman IIC though.

Blacknight

Glad you like it.

I like the legs and protruding cockpit much better than the original. I just pulled out the original glass spider sculpt I have from the 90s and its legs are so thin and just look wrong. I like how sleek this redesign looks - it looks dangerous.

Aaron Thurston

Damnit!!! I'm gonna need like 4 of those, for my Clan Wolf air defense star!

Joshua Bressel

Left no, Right.. perfection.....

Those side torsos and narrow cockpit are beautiful. Definitely gives it a more distinct style than first appeared in the concept drawing due to the angle. It also makes me love those arms even more than I already did.

Ryan de Haas

Didn't get to them at all back then haha. We barely had the wave one designs ready, with plenty still needing modeling, when management slammed us with more designs than ever indicated. The ship was already sunk, but at least they could change things around without wasting any effort. More stuff is in the works.

Anthony Scroggins

I was just looking at the list of mechs that were removed from the Kickstarter, like the Firestarter and Berserker. Did your team get very far in those designs before they were removed? If so, can you share any of the art? I assume many will show up in a future release, but it would be so cool to see any art you worked on. Thanks!

Andrew Wiesner

I like the ronin look and I’m a sucker for any Electronic Warfare details like radar dishes :)

I consider that bit of text a throw away because the mechs have never shared a single lick of visual similarity. The Galahad came after in real space and Brent Evans didn't see fit to make them resemble each other. If anything it's the Galahad that would be made to look more like a rifleman/glass spider if similarities are to be pushed. People say art is the least form of canon, but art is my thing :P

I still think this needs to be compared to the Star League Galahad it was supposedly based on

I love the curved panels in the front section. They are so like the old sculpts. Regarding the level of detail... it takes me 30% more time to paint one of your mechs instead of a metal one. I am ok with the level of detail. The main problem is that there is almost no flat surfaces big enough to add insignias or even decals. The new Galahad looks very nice and a level of details between the Rifleman and the Galahad would be great. Anyway, you did a great work with this one and it looks lovely. Again, a huge improvement over the reseen (ugh!)

Not all have to be super detailed. I like a mix of ultra detail and smooth bits from mech to mech. Like old republic vs rebel alliance Y-wings.

Taylor Shead

I like everything about the new Glass Spider except for the narrow cockpit. I kind of wish it still retained a little of the more blocky profile, or something set a little further back into the torso. Despite this, its an attractive looking redesign, and I’m happy to be seeing more of these VMI inspired mechs returning with a fresh look. As for the detail, I think its perfect as is. There is plenty of smooth area to apply larger/bolder faction decals. That’s probably my one gripe about the Timber Wolf: its side torsos have so much paneling that you can only get away with putting the smallest FPG decals on them.

Im 99% sure ill be cutting a set of those two in pieces. Torso/Legs from the Galahad and Feet/arms/antenna from the Rifleman. And it will be 100% love. :)

I like a mix of the large panels and details for painting. Focusing the detail packing into places like under the arms and on the back of Mechs helps me believe that the heavy armor is on the front and makes it easier to add logos and the like. It's actually one of the things I really like about the new BattleMaster, since it has a lot of larger panels on it's thighs and hips, but also has a bunch of detail in other places. Cool shapes can be cool and modern without segmenting it a ton. I'm really excited about this one for that reason.

Raymond White

I came here to say this. It looks like the Galahad is getting one on the leg.

Totally disagree on Behemoth/Stone Rhino. Behemoth gets used a lot in sci-fi and fantasy stuff, I know only one Stone Rhino and it is just such an evocative name!

THIS!

Kanrei13

I like the details for sure, but it can be very difficult to apply a decal. It’s nice to have a couple of panels for unit and faction insignias.

Andrew Wiesner

The added details make the mech look more industrial/crud that fit into the Battletech style to me. The cleaner surfaces present a more modern/sleek style, technological advanced. Overall I think both could work with limiting the use of the cleaner surfaces to a smaller set of designs to provide contrast in the miniature line.

Dan Hegarty

Can we get a comparison of those two with a Rifleman IIC next just for completeness sake.
