Goshawk Concept Sketch

Here's an interesting one. The Goshawk.
I think this is one of the stronger cases where the phoenix redesign is almost entirely better than the original, so I leaned pretty heavy into that while still trying to retain some of the original and not obsolete the phoenix visual entirely.
It should gain a lot more dynamic once posed too.

How do the Goshawk fans feel about it?

The original Blockhead works better than the monoeye, IMO. At least the shoulder baffles and MG pod survived.

That’s right, my mistake, but your combo of the big shoulder pads and Phoenix head are perfect

Tinman

All versions have always had an integrated right arm weapon. Left arm having the handheld MG pod which I kept here. Glad you like it.

Anthony Scroggins

Did you consider going with a “handheld” right arm weapon like the original? I think it would help this one stand out in comparison to the Phoenix version, but the head on this one is perfect

Tinman

The Goshawk has always been one of those... I want to use it, but never got to it mechs for me. While I normally prefer the originals because I'm old and set in ways, I like this redesign over all the other iterations. Great job.

Still looks as alien/Japanese as ever

I quite like the Phoenix-inspired head combined with the retro gun cluster in the left arm. I don't think I'll miss the enormous shoulder guards of the original either. I'd be really interested to see how it looks in a more dynamic pose. The more human-proportionate legs don't really convey the speed in a standing pose. (The original was way too spindly. but the PP version also seems to have pretty long legs to my eye.)

Peter Shah

His MWO one references the Goshawk 2, which I wasn't sure about doing. The 2 definitely has more interesting head and torso shapes going on.

Anthony Scroggins

Tgis is very nice. I think there's a lot of benefit to getting away from the chonky one-size-fits-all style we see with some of the earlier work on this Patreon. The Black Knight and Sentinel show very nicely how to maintain a cool aesthetic without making everything samey

Michael Cohen

You're right this is interesting.

Tyler Erickson

The Unseen and Phoenix Goshawks got morphed together, and it worked out quite nicely.

I can see where this Vapor Eagle certainly leans toward it’s Phoenix rendition, but I do see where the older VMI Vapor Eagle is showing, especially with the left arm mounted gun, the more angular shoulder pads, the crest at the back of the head, and the pronounced upper torso. Honestly, I really like it! I too liked certain aspects of the PP Vapor Eagle over the original, and this blends the best characteristics of both. Great work!

I really enjoy this Mech. There's a reasonable amount of bulk that I think prevented the original Goshawk from looking like a functional machine. I personally think the old PP art is horrible and this is a really great translation of both.

Raymond White

I am a big fan of the Unseen Vapor Eagle, even with its dinky head and Shapely™ legs. However, the Project Phoenix/Reseen version does look frankly excellent and still maintains the basic silhouette and design cues of the original: big shoulder baffles, a triangular top end, a BIG GUN ARM and a "pistol" arm, hybrid bird/humanoid legs, etc. They both just look raptor-like, and that's kinda the point based on the name, I guess. I love this hybrid version. It's kind of the best of both worlds? MWO did a pretty solid Vapor Eagle too, *but* they gave it big Phoenix Hawk-type shoulder jump jets that break up the silhouette too much/make it look too much like other mechs, so I'm glad you stuck with the Unseen and Reseen here. In my mind, the shoulder baffles should be even *more* aggressive, but that might just be because it's in a static pose. I imagine if you have it in that classic "running" pose that both other Vapor Eagles have, it'd look proportionally appropriate.

Robert Schuster

Ghost of Winter was also an early novel for me, so this mech holds a spot in my heart perhaps more than the novel actually deserves. The shoulder flares and the armor skirt look fantastic, as those are the only parts of the original design worth preserving. Not a big fan of the head though. The original was completely terrible, and the Phoenix redesign reminds me more of a boomerang than a beak. However, I do like how immediately distinctive it is.

Ryan de Haas

Overall i like it. But i'll be honest, i liked alex's head and jumpjets a little bit more. They had a more aggressive style. And yes, this is one of the few where phoenix was better, the original always remembered me of the headless horseman.

Swen Decker

Ahh the Goshawk, aka one of the 'This is why we can't have nice things' because of the cheesy combo of large pulse laser and targetting computer :D But I love this iteration, its lost its absurd pauldrons but the designs there, I like the cockpits faceplate too!

Steven Cross

I think the PP mechs get a lot of hate because a few too many of the most critical mechs fell short in the view of many. Overall many had merits, or at least were obscure enough mechs that no one was bothered by them changing. If that project wasn't so rushed I think they would have come out better, particularly in gaining a bit more shape diversity.

Anthony Scroggins

Obsoleting the Phoenix mechs has been a fear of mine from this entire process. Especially with Clan Mechs. Despite having been a fan of this IP for 3 decades I generally (though not universally) preferred the project Phoenix look to the old unseen. I really appreciate the fact that you are leaning hard on the Goshawks PP look.

James Bixby

I really like the absolute alien feel that most of the clan mechs have.

Needs a little tighter design, shoulder armour need to be angled down more ti give it a menacing look. Overall good

I think the masses will read better once in 3D where they separate out more. Everything above the legs is blobbing together visually when they're smaller elements.

Anthony Scroggins

Definitely beefed it up, mroe in line with phoenix, then a little more on the torso. Otherwise we'd end up with it notably taller than the other 55 tonners. I think the original art had some serious proportioning issues, like the micro head, tiny lasers, comparatively big MGs. I was hard to tell what size it should be. But also yeah, I kinda chunk up most mechs.

Anthony Scroggins

Kinda of a phoenix detail there, with the 4 big prongs. It's also a well armored LPL. Gotta make it look a bit bigger than a few machine guns in the other arm :D

Anthony Scroggins

The Goshawk is one of my favorite mechs, being pivotal in the Ghost of Winter, my first Mechwarrior novel and first exposure to the universe. I like the over all features, especially the arms, shoulders, and chest, but it might be slightly too thick in the legs?

Charles Lubanje

Looks a bit thick all around. I think the design elements are good though.

Taylor Shead

Seems kinda chunky. It might just be the angle and the pose, but the older art seemed to have a bit more slender grace.

Joe M Emmert

This looks great!!!

Lexikon

Very interesting. The original Goshawk was... a mess. On the other hand, the reseen was very nicely alien, and I think you've captured that here. This was one of the designs I was most fascinated to see

Alex F

So alien. I like it.

Jordan G Roberts

The right arm feels too thick to me. That "sight" right by the elbow on top feels too big. Overall looks good though.

Very nice! Got rid of those bizarre sexy legs and nozzle arm. I like it a lot.

David Razi

The head and cockpit make this for me. It's Goshawk-y enough to be recognizable, which is really all I need from a redo. Nice one!

I lean to heavier Mechs, put this one looks like it would be great to pilot!
