Crockett Concept Sketch

Here's an interesting one. The Crockett.
I had a few of my other designers a chance at this one but it proved to be a uniquely ugly mech that can be tough to break away from in the right ways to bring it into a modern image.
I won't even claim I came upon the perfect solution either, but I think it'll look good on the table.
What's interesting to me is how it both still looks like a Crockett, but also feels very different. It looks somehow fatter, without being fatter. More pulled together might be an accurate description.
I've kept the CT about the same size, little shorter up top but it gains a proper pelvis.
Side torsos are thicker, but are held in tighter. The SRM arrangement gives it a hint of Warhammer feeling.
Legs are beefed up in some ways, slimmed in others.
The arms definitely blew up, partly to fit with large laser style guides, and to feel as sturdy as the rest of the mech.
I also kept our new Flashman in view as these two mechs feel like they go together.
Think I took it to a good place? Or is it not the right kind of derp machine anymore?
Ok a bit late to the party, but I have to ramble.
My late partner Donna loved the Crockett. She called it the Crock and always took one. When she wanted to name it, I vetoed "Steve" "Irwin" or "Crikey" She snuck it past me and named it Bindi.
This is a beautiful update and I can't want to get one and paint it Steiner blue and gold in memory of her.

At first glance I feel like it's lost too much personality; the side torsos kinda blend into the center torso in this image. I blame the SRM pods - the side torsos look short relative to the head with them separated . But if the CT's curvature is easier to see in 3d then it'll probably work. The head looks more like a cat than a samurai helmet, but I don't mind that. It's not a Katana yet. Arms and legs look great. *edit* Curving the bottom of the CT makes it so much better than the original.
I was surprised to learn that the center-mounted weapon was a lie!

I think I would like to see the head-flanges more pronounced, give the Mech some character (even if it is ugly character)

That's not exactly a ringing endorsement :V

I really like the general layout of this mech. However, assssssssssss always, I would recommend less line breaks in the armor. Just makes it look like there are a lot of weak points. (The less MWO the better, don't want my mechs falling apart like legos hahaha!)

I freely admit the CrockofS**t had me at a loss. So was more than happy you took it over. Def better than I anticipated. (still ugly, but tif it wasn't... would it be a Crockett?)

So is the Lancelot the last IS mech we haven’t seen?

I think it's fair for a lot of people to be cautious about buying the comstar packs, as they contained so many designs sight-unseen where you knew they were going to see big changes that could go many directions.
Meanwhile you kinda knew what you'd get from say, a Zeus.

I could have easily mounted the SRM's mid or lower on the ST's, but wanted to make some use of those top bits. Totally a personal preference thing though. Coulda gone either way.

Centering the SRM's was discussed, but ultimately we kept this bit of side offset to keep the ST shapes more interesting.

It's a Warhammer IIC. I get that people like it because it looks "better" than the original, but it's not distinct anymore, just a shapeless blob.

Loving this rendition, huge improvement. The only thing I'd change if able would be to make the fins between the SRM launchers more prominent. Love your work!

I like that you kept the distinctive square shoulders while fixing the awful hips and arms. It definitely feels fatter, but I think that is because of the insane proportions the old design had. I look forward to seeing the final model.

Oh yes please. I really like what you've done here. It was always a Mech screaming out for fixing and I think you've done a great job here. Only slight change would be around the blades at the head assembly would be slightly larger like the original.

The original was so unbelievably ugly and stupid that any change was welcome, but this looks really solid now. I miss the round/smooth SL designs, but either way, I regret not getting the pack it's in now, cause all the SL designs are coming out nicely.

The limbs are a major improvement I always felt that the Crockett's hips and and legs got more than their fair share of mass compared to the arms.
I'm not to sure about the torso and cockpit. It looks a bit generic. I think it needs the crests just to link back to its heritage.

Can you put up a side by side of the Flashman and Crockett so we could compare them?

I would have preferred the launchers to be lower down the torso while keeping the “spines” present. Other than that, I like how its body is less barrel shaped and has a bit more “modern” feel to it. I also like that its arms are beefier. That was definitely something that needed to be changed on the original.
2020-06-16 15:03:48 +0000 UTC
It’s so ugly! I love it!
I am a bit iffy on the high armor flanges being replaced by SRAM racks, but I also have no better suggestions.

While I like it, I have the same issues with the arms and SRM's. The arms look fine, but they don't look like they can swivel left or right. The offset SRM's detract from the straight, "sleek and smooth" styling of a star league era mech to me. I could see the offset on the Katana maybe to differentiate it from the original, but think they would look better at the top of the torso for the original Crockett.

Never had any attachment to the Crockett. Looks good.

Overall, I really like it! Maybe the greatest departure from the original, but in this case departing from the original was sorely needed. My only thoughts on what could be improved would be to adjust the elbows so that they look like the arm can actually be straightened, and maybe moving the SRM racks so they sit directly atop the side torsos, as opposed to offset on the corner.

I've never been a fan of the Crockett because it wasn't a *charming* doofus (like the Mercury or Hussar), just a plain ol' doofus. I've always wanted it to look better, and I was excited to see it in the list because I figured that signaled the time to start a ComGuards/Wobbie force. I think I was right: this looks so much better. It's still weird/awkward, but now it's weird/awkward in that SLDF-era "big chonk w/ big guns" aesthetic that the Flashman and co. fill too.
This is also kind of a blueprint for how to update some of the doofy-looking 3055 designs that, deep down, have a kernel of "good design" that needs to be rescued and nurtured.

It is might have lost too much derp. On the other hand, its stats were always much better than its derp appearance, so maybe that's ok! Maaaybe if the crests were a bit more pronounced it would keep more of the same feel. But overall I like it.

This is a tremendous improvement. I knew what it was before I saw the written name, so you've stayed true to the spirit of the mech. I'm looking forward to getting one of these.

Looks nice. Recognized it immediately without looking at the name, even though on closer comparison there are quite a few differences to the original. I like it.

Bunny ear srm launchers -check , wide hips-check, ugly as hell -Nope . I wouldn't mind piloting it now . Great job.

Interesting redesign...this ja not the old Crocket any more for sure, but something altogether new and a great evolution. Respect for this brave new upgrade and thanks for re-making this rather ugly, but very capable mech. I always liked to play one and now it finally looks good in the tabletop.

So, I just looked it up. This design looks sooo much better if you ask me.
2020-06-16 09:23:42 +0000 UTC
I am probably the wrong person to ask, I didn't even know this Mech and therefore have no history in mind when I am looking at it. Having said that, from a 'neutral' point of view so to say, I think it looks very good.
2020-06-16 09:21:57 +0000 UTC
It looks much better than it used to. I’d pilot it.

Interesting take on that mech! I really like it! I greatly appreciate that there are similarities to other Mechs of this era! As it should be!

Very interesting redesign there. The Crockett is kind of a mess all over the place, but you've made an interesting job of cleaning up the design and making it a bit less... weird. I also like the redesign of the LBX to make it visible.
