Spider Concept Sketch

Time for this goofy mech.
I wanted to see how well I could preserve the old look. Luckily my past experience with the Osts and it being a SL mech started me out with a good direction. I also happened to draw my own spider maaaaany years ago, so I pulled a little from there too.

Gonna have to explore how to properly solve the back details in 3D, as Id prefer all those fins make sense haha.

Did I do the death trap justice?

i had to take a double take on this one. when i first saw it i wasn't sure which mech it was.

Jeffery Smith

I like it. I think it's a good update of the original (though I'll always prefer the DA spider)

Matthew Morris

I like the balance here. Agree legs look slightly long in comparison but I would be a happy zoomer in this one.

Martin Sweeney

I really like that you preserved the curviness of the original but applied the very sensible MWO design decisions—often they seem just chunky and square for the sake of being chunky and square (to the detriment of interesting curvy designs), but in the case of the Spider, they basically provided the first opportunity for someone like me to see it and go, "Oh so THAT is how it's supposed to look!" The original is just such a mystery to me... is it anime? Is it '80s? Is it scaled-up Battle Armor? Is it Retro '50s Robot Throwback? What is the aesthetic??? MWO at least *has one*, and here, you've done a good job not simply copying that one but merging it with the old-school curves. I will say I'm also in the camp of not really liking the sharp/pointy cockpit angle. I dunno why, something about it just feels wrong, like it shouldn't protrude *so* far?

Robert Schuster

Curves are good. They are part of the original BT aesthetic. Definitely don't want to get rid of all of them. :)

Richard Jensen

So... I was bound and determined to hate anything that was NOT the MWO version of the Spider, I think they just killed that design. But I have to say, this one is growing on me a lot faster than I thought it would. I do have a couple of comments... rather items for thought... the knees/hips look a little funny to me - I think the rounded ball & socket joints have an odd look here. I also think that pulling a page from the MWO book, and hunkering the head down, and spreading the top fins apart would help give it a more aggressive, Formula 1 Racecar look.

Right on. It is still light years beyond the original as has been all of your work!

Thank you!! You just helped mw figure out what was bugging me about the feet! You're right, they do feel too squared/blocky, as compares to the rest of the mech, especially the legs. The legs are nice and round, not a squared off armor spot on them. The rest of the mech as well has mostly curved edges on things. The feet just feel square.

Yeah definitely one where MWO did a great job in its departure. As much as I like my blocky mechs though, I don't want to throw out all of the curves :)

Anthony Scroggins

I like it. The Spider is one of the few Mechs where I prefer the boxy MWO version to the original, and I think this version is a perfect blend of the two. The back fins are more the MWO style, but look great, and I love how you kept the torso bulky but rounded and with the same "web" type pattern to the armor. The head took a minute to get used to, but I like that as well. The legs and feet are the only thing I don't care for as much. The legs look good, but I think they look a tiny bit bulky. The toes/feet look way too blocky and basic to me, where the rest of the Mech looks very lean and super articulated, the feet just don't seem to fit.

The fins look fantastic. Long enough to give it the distinctive spider look, but short enough that they look reasonably functional. Can't wait to see how you tie the back together.

Ryan de Haas

I initially had shorter legs, but orders came from above.

Anthony Scroggins

Interesting, I didn't see that kind of detail on any of the art. Couldn't find a full back shot of the mini but couldn't see such an indication from side views. More little details and openings on the rear for sure, which I can still pull off on this one.

Anthony Scroggins

I like the torso and fins though the legs look a tad bit too long.

okay, one of the unique "Bad Design" Choices I always loves with the spider was that if you looked, it's leg armor was all concentrated on the front. that is absent here. not sure if that is bad or good but this Spider has not skipped leg day, that much is certian. otherwise, to be honest, there is not much difference between this and the old school beyond the head module. maybe give it a three fingered cla like the new Ostscout?

James Bixby

Yea it looks good. I think the pose will matter most here. Embody the spider and spread the limbs.

Christopher Eastwood

That looks "Amazing". (Pun intended)

Sapphirus

Hips for days! Lovely redesign!

you could probably paint a decal to alter it.

James Abbot-Cole

might be cos the toes are shorter

James Abbot-Cole

I like everything but the cockpit glass. The face is so important to provide character, and the pointy nose just doesn't work in my opinion. Great overall look.

Richard Jensen

Spider mech, Spider Mech, does whatever a Spidermech does.

James Abbot-Cole

never a fan of the spider design but now I like it. looks like it'll fall apart as soon as a heavy looks at it.

James Abbot-Cole

Overall, I really like it. I particularly like the double fin on the back. The double "toes" feel weird to me though, I'm not sure why. I know it's part of the original design, but something here just feels off about it, but I just can't figure out what it is.

I love the head on your design. I think you have really captured it.

One of the very first FASA original designs, the Spider's allways been a bit of an oddball. Nice clean-up there

Alex F

I like it but it’s only a death trap if you get hit. It looks a spider mech too me.

MechaParade

Dekker would be proud of this deathtrap.
