Exterminator Concept Sketch

Exterminator time.

This one is a challenge because its shapes are so distinct, but those same shapes are what make it look really goofy. Yep, I know a fair number of people are going to be upset about me softening the blade chest look, but while that's the no1 iconic part it's also the no1 goofiest part (beside the easily fixed egg torso).

I think this still looks like an Exterminator though, definitely a distinct look compared against other mechs. Luckily the arms and legs are a lot easier to keep faithful with a bit of tweaking. And hey, the loadout is shown correctly now :)

Love it, hate it, or maintaining the same indifference you've always had for it?

Thanks for clarifying Anthony ! Hope to see the Spider soon...

TIM STRAUVEN

You guys absolutely NEED to ALSO release this guy in clear resin, too!!!!!

Joshua Bressel

In love...

Joshua Bressel

That's just an auto timer set to make my posts public after two months in case I don't manually do it sooner. 1 week is still early access, and I don't want that to be the main draw of my page. I want everyone to see my art.

Anthony Scroggins

Which is my point exactly, since Patreon states : "...released this post 59 days early for patrons"

TIM STRAUVEN

Not crazy awesome like some of the others, but I can't really say how I would've preferred it. The Exterminator just doesn't give much to work with for "wow factor" and this looks like a solid un-derping of the original which is all we can ask for.

Aaron Stevens

It was released here a week ago...

Aaron Stevens

Another great redesign. One minor nitpick : the sketch has just been published on the KS page as well, which slightly contradicts the "early access" mentioned on your Patreon...

TIM STRAUVEN

Like Daniel, I think the mech loses a bit of its identiity with the wider chest blade. Likewise, flat surfaces inhibit stealth as they more easily reflect vs. scatter or refract incident radiation. I do understand that the manufacturing process does constrain the design, but perhaps you could make the thighs more and chest bladed medially and/or rounded. I would love it if the top of the AMS had the same kind of inter-digitating, zig-zg pattern as the missile bay doors on the F35 or F22. Like the AMS pops out of a stealthed compartment.

Something about the paneling

Jakob Fredensborg

Ugly! So... it's still an Exterminator! But in seriousness, it keeps the key attributes and removes the Derp. Some mechs that is what is needed. I think this is one. I do dread seeing what levels of Black Magic and Plastic Surgery it is going to take to fix the "Robo-Chimp", aka Kintaro, though.....

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

While I am not a huge fan of the Exterminator, I still really dig its blade chest and feel a little bit of its identity is lost without it. I'm sure you already tried this, but perhaps it could be thinned out as it goes further down the torso? There are a few depictions of this that I believe work very well, particularly BishopSteiner's take on his DeviantArt. Also, following James' suggestion, a thinner chest blade would help reinforce the idea of the Exterminator being a stealth platform, even though it doesn't need it functionally due to the absorptive coatings and ECM systems you mentioned earlier.

This is great! I've always been a fan of the Exterminator, even the original wonky looking one. You did a really good job on toning the blade while still keeping it looking like an Exterminator. One of the things I'm noticing on these more recent Star League redesigns is they've all had just enough of the rounded sleek and smooth look to keep that original aesthetic, while still being a great looking update. Having the 2750 era miniatures included in my kickstarter stuff was a priority and I'm looking forward to putting the redesigns on the table along side their originals.

The way mechs move inherently would make them terrible at stealth in the way that aircraft execute it. You'll be constantly facing surfaces towards enemy radar no matter what angling you go for. Stealth armor in BT would be much more about absorptive coatings and active systems (as it uses ECM). The optical aspect is also easily solved with future tech that doesn't rely on shape. This design avoids having many forward facing plates and that's good enough IMO.

Anthony Scroggins

Not many, definitely more Clan mechs to go.

Anthony Scroggins

For the most part I dig it. My biggest problem is the exterminator is a stealth mech, and the exposed LRM rack and AMS would comprise stealth Both need to have quick open and close panels next to them. Reference the F-22’s gun pod in the case of the AMS and the 22 and F-117 for the missiles Same with the arm mounted lasers, which need to look like in tro 3050u in so far as being either retractable or at least semi recessed like in the head. I would also rework those channels in the forward thighs, which would reflect direct signatures back.

James Bixby

I might make the CT extrude just a bit further for the blade look. As is, change the arms and it might pass for a cool looking Enfield.

That was the Dark Age Atlas. :) (Technically, I think it's the Atlas III) This kinda looks like it should be crouching behind home plate, giving signals to the pitcher. :)

I like the torso a lot; it works. I’m iffy on the shoulder and shin pads; they look too much like, well, pads. Probably because of their border. Could they be made to look a little more integrated?

Carlos Sempere

The original was silly looking and butt ugly. We've removed silly. Unfortunately, if we were to remove ugly as well it wouldn't be an Exterminator any more.

Kanrei13

Strongly resembles the Exterminator seen in XTRO: Gunslingers. Which is good because that was also an excellent redesign.

Taking design cues from the F-117 would have been awesome!

Ryan de Haas

I'm curious to see how it looks in model form. I understand toning down the derp factor, but in this picture it looks like the "blade torso" has been toned down so much that you don't notice it unless you are looking for it. Could just be the perspective of this image though. My favorite designs are the ones that are instantly recognizable on the table, without having to look for specific details. A lot of humanoid mechs struggle with that, since the basic body shape is pretty much locked in. For better or worse, the old Exterminator was distinctive, and I hope it still maintains that easily recognizable status.

Ryan de Haas

Looks really good, i might suggest mirroring the shoulders and the shins. The shoulders have those two solid looking plates of armor, that might look good on the shins as well. I would think all the segmented armor plates on the CT would provide too many weak points though. Very nice overall.

Andrew McKenna

Very nice! So how many IS mechs are left at this point?

Robert Moore

I always really liked the Exterminator as a concept, but I never thought it lived up to its potential. It's sorta like the Grim Reaper or the Crockett in that way... neat concept, definitely *could* be super cool, but somehow didn't make it. I think this gets it all the way to cool. It's still very clearly an Exterminator, but it is a bit different. I think the discrete central paneling instead of the "blade" chest looks great and is a good surrogate for the actual "blade", but I wouldn't mind that old design cue coming back. So long as there's some clear delineation between the center torso and side torsos, you've got one of the Exterminator's design cues there. The other one that's slightly different here, that sloping, top-mounted cockpit, is there too in a way that matches this new take on the center torso. I like it a lot. Lastly, you have those super beefy arms with large shoulders, and those are basically unchanged here, so all together it's clearly an Exterminator to me!

Robert Schuster

Huge improvement over the old, love this rendition

Joe Wright

I like the upper body and head. The hips look to hard squared and break up the overall flow of the design to me. I think the edges need to be softened a bit and not jet out so much.

Dan Hegarty

I prefer the blade and original cockpit. I approve of the appearance of the LRM-10.

James Hauserj

I would honestly like to see a pass under Bishops pen - some of his proportions make the thing look a little more dynamic I guess?

I think the "bladed" look is because of the lore, it being a 'mech that used stealth systems vs. sensors before the succession wars. But we could just say this is the version after the succession wars, without the stealth capabilities.... ? Perhaps someone else could weigh in on if ComStar brought the stealth version to fight against the clans?

Count_Jester

I definitely fell into the 'indifferent' category on this one. It's less distinct than the original, but seeing as how I never picked up a copy of the original, I guess the distinctness wasn't a positive. :)

I agree the head is great. I expected more smooth lines of plate armor for all the advanced camo tech they were supposed to have as a head hunter. Just my thoughts. Again, love the cockpit and that all weapons are shown proper.

It is a great improvement. The old art and the miniature have not aged gracefuly. It is a nice homage to the Gunslinger Variant. Good job!

I've never owned an Exterminator. I hope the AMS looks like it can angle up to take out those pesky missiles.

Mike

This is an overall improvement. The original sculpt was awkward looking. But at the same time I think the redesign needs something to make it a little more distinct. I think retaining more elements of the original cockpit (vertical slab face flush to the torso and the elongated bump at the back of the head being a little more pronounced) might do the job. This cockpit reminds me of the Griffin a lot and that's not a slight against the griffin.

Nyxus

To be honest, i would have expected more sharp angles in a "F-117" way. And something bugs me about the shoulderplates, but i cant quite put the finger on it. The head is epic though, i can see the gunslinger reference.

Swen Decker

Looks worlds better than the original to me.

wiski

Give it a hockey stick and for arm sheid that goalies use. Look like a goalie. I can see Exterminator but looks like a griffin head got stuck on.

You've kept what made it cool while updating it nicely. Great stuff there

Alex F

Do you mean a central vertical edge? I'm really not a fan of those unless it's part of a larger smooth torso flow, something that rarely comes up in BT.

Anthony Scroggins

Looks awesome! Have you considered giving the center chest plates an angled or sloped look? Just a small grade even would bring back that iconic look.
