Dragon Concept Sketch

Enter the Dragon!

Lets be real here, I mostly copied from the Dragon Marco Mazzoni painted for the Succession Wars TRO cover. Enhanced and refined a bit from there.
Main change was giving the right arm an upper arm section. I think the big raised gun arm version looks interesting, but not quite amazing enough to warrant breaking from the stats. I have given it a stubbier upper though.

I think the Dragon for once kinda shows the dragon visual themes with its fire (lrm) breathing snout.

looks like the baby brother of the Thug. i like it

Jeffery Smith

@Marc Bradle In what way?

Aaron Stevens

4-3-3 makes it look like a dragon's snout

Tinman

That is a Mighty looking Dragon you have there. There was a time that I didn't like those 'drum' looking shoulders on mechs. But you make them look great. Thank you for sharing.

William Janak

Fair enough!

David Razi

@Joe I mean moving the four wide to the middle, and having 3 wide on top and bottom. The middle row is the widest portion of the mech, and having a 4-3-3 pattern looks like a copy-paste placeholder instead of a congruent design.

Aaron Stevens

If I make all tube layouts "normative" then none of them will look special.

Anthony Scroggins

I'm all about nicely formed offset tube layouts, that's why I've always gotta be on the lookout for meaningful arrangements that break away from that for variety. The Dragon is always depicted 4-3-3 so I wanted to retain that.

Anthony Scroggins

No that's my bad on the names, good catch. I usually don't screw them up haha.

Anthony Scroggins

That would make it an LRM 11, not 10! :)

Joe Wright

Left arm looks out of place, like it doesn't really connect to the shoulder. Love the idea of stubby upper right arm though, perfect way to keep the art themes without diverging from the actual stats. EDIT: Also, should the nose LRM have 4 tubes in the middle instead? Looks a bit odd having the four tubes on top.

Aaron Stevens

The arms look a little tacked on. Mite look better raising up the arms and having it fit into a cut out in the shoulder drum area. About half way up or a little less.

Chris

Dang, was he hitting the MGH (mech growth hormone). Those kinds of gainz don't come naturally.

I absolutely love this design! My one hope is that when the time comes to render it for the mini, you give it a more active pose. Right now, it looks like it's trying to fire its weapons while squatting to poop.

Terence Harris

Shouldn't the LRMs be in a 3-4-3 pattern, though? No offence, but they seem a bit cramped on top in the rows of 4-3-3 since the middle is where the torso is widest. Either way, I love it. I can't wait to expand my Drac force with some of these.

David Razi

The Succession Wars: TRO I have has a cover by Marco Mazzoni, was there an alternate version with one by Alex Iglesias, or did Marco use Alex's as a reference?

Agree with the changes to the right arm. Good call.

Amazing

Taylor Shead

This one is basically perfect.

William Minsinger

So after a little time to reflect there is one piece of constructive feedback I'd like to offer. Could the battle fist be modified slightly so it looks a little less like the muzzle of a gun? e.g. having the claw in an open pose like it is getting ready to strike, or just doing something simple like making the hinges on claws more prominent and have the claw tips come together in point for piecing armour on impact?

Nyxus

It's an illusion. You see the nose always arrives 5 minutes before the rest of the mech

Nyxus

Im always looking for the one grain of salt in new designs (real groknard), but i cant find one here. Excellent work, nuff said.

Swen Decker

Looks great I cant wait to add it to my collection of dragons

Nyxus

If this mini was released and I buy it, I'll definitely (just for fun) paint it up as Charizard

Sapphirus

Overall design looks great, but the torso's and legs seem out of proportion to me. Like the legs are too long, or the torso's are too small.

Nailed it!

Kanrei13

I was really curious to see this one, and it’s a winner! I still think it’s a bizarre concept… bald head, snout that’s also a protruding belly, abacus bead shoulders, somehow it’s fast… but it’s iconic. I wouldn’t have been into these wider, drum-like shoulders if not for the detailing. Those panel lines are super cool.

Carlos Sempere

Yep it's a chunky AC5, but mostly armor. It can be a slower firing model with the big rounds. AC's are the hardest weapon to do scale parity on because many mechs have their "look" defined by the size of their autocannons.

Anthony Scroggins

Yeah I'm always looking for any reference excuse to not use a traditional hand, for variety, so this is definitely one of those.

Anthony Scroggins

Meanwhile my bosses wanted them less stocky :D

Anthony Scroggins

I always think of the Dragon as gaining its speed not because it's low weight, but because it's got a huge engine and oversized myomer bundles. It raw powers through the air.

Anthony Scroggins

Not sure if it's just me, but that AC/5 looks bigger than I would've thought, I dunno, barrel just has me thinking AC/10 instead for some reason. But I really like this design.

Malintus

I think they need to be chunky to match well with the torso and legs. Some of the art is this way, but not all.

Anthony Scroggins

Not currently as it's not in the KS, but it is a mech I like.

Anthony Scroggins

I hear you!

Carlos Sempere

I can dig it! I would prefer a more human like hand to the battle claw but the claw is traditional. So yeah!

James Bixby

I want that mini so I can paint a dragon mouth on it

Joe Wright

Looks great. I always like how Alex's Dragon had the little touch of the rocket exhaust venting out the side of the torso. I think this drawing builds on that, giving the mech a distinct dragon look.

You have *no idea* how long I've been waiting for a Dragon mini that is as cool as the Dragon *drawings*. This is it. Gimme 20.

Robert Schuster

Not to be picky but the legs seem to need to be slightly stockier. Other than that I love the rework of this!

Todd W

I disagree that it looks like a dragon at all. I think it looks more like a line backer, football player, but it’s still a great looking design.

MechaParade

Maybe it is because I have eye problems... but the chonk/proportions are screaming Awesome/Zeus to me... for a mech that is a little on the sprightly side - it seems awful thicccccc?

Very nice, but I think the arms are a little big and chunky, especially the AC/5 arm, otherwise it looks great.

Trevor R.N.

Nice.

Steve McNabb

Black Knight was a couple weeks back.

Very nice update there. Well done!

Alex F

any sneak peeks at the Black Knight and Highlander ?

Is the Devastator on your to do list?

Tyler Erickson

I was sooo worried about this one. I love the mwo dragon a ton, however you have blown all my worries away with another killer redesign. Fantastic!

Jordan G Roberts

The torso really does suggest a dragon's head, with the cockpit "eyes"

NICE!! This was one of the redesigns I was particularly looking forward to, and on my first look here, I'm not finding anything I don't like about it.

Much honor very kurita

Davions can use dragons right? Please say yes.

Christopher Eastwood

I have never liked the dragon. congrats on changing my mind.

There seems to be a problem . I am only aloud to like this pic once.
