Panther Concept Sketch

The Panther, designed by Dale Eadeh, with oversight and draw-over by my as usual.

This one hasn't completed approvals from above yet, but Dale wanted me to show this one off ASAP. I think it looks cool so hopefully wont change much if at all in final.

The head went through about 4 evolutions, basically between Dale making it more actual panther, and me toning it back into the very rudimentary mech panther shape. I think we hit a nice balance.
Rest was pretty straight forward, mostly line management.

Faithful Draconis mechwarriors please check in and rate how much you want to overheat in this thing.

Finally! A Panther I like!

Joshua Bressel

Love the direction you're going with that PPC barrel, never could quite get over seeing it slung under the arm.

I like the redesign a lot, but am I the only one who looks at the head and sees the cat sitting at the table from the meme?

Yankee Air Pirate

That's the old art, the new art heavily plans on being much more consistent in terms of scale and size. Light mechs should make big weapons like PPCs, LRM/15s-20s and AC/10s-20s look huge by comparison. After all, the weapons are the same amount of slots, no matter the mech's size or tonnage.

Malintus

The PPC is way too big. It's still a light mech at the end of the day, Even the 3025/3039 art has the PPC extend out just over another fist length.

This barrel is even longer than the one in the original 3025. I feel there's a case for it to be a bit smaller. The Catapult's medium lasers show that there are smaller versions of weapons out there.

Mike

I like it, PPC and all.

The original Panther in TRO 3025 had the long PPC barrel, which I loved. When Ral Partha made the mini they gave it the short barrel, Which was copied by TRO 3050 and all subsequent art. I heartily approve of the return to the long barrel.

Kanrei13

I like it, though I am in the "PPC is excessive" camp.

Ryan Voigt

I heavily disagree with everyone saying to make the PPC smaller. Sure, there are various manufacturers, but at the end of the day, a PPC takes up the same amount of slots as any other PPC (Not counting Clanner "magic") The barrel of a PPC should be the same size (or as close as feasibly possible), whether on a Griffin, Banshee, Panther or Urbanmech. Really liking this rendition.

Malintus

I somehow missed that this got posted! This looks awesome! I love how much the head looks like a panther.

They're in wave 2. Order another one when they open back up for wave 2 stuff. :)

Sometimes the lore can't justify itself. PPC can't be that small.

Anthony Scroggins

I like this Kitty!

Jeffery Smith

The head looks fantastic. I like the balance of showing the namesake while still being a functional cockpit with good (Or at least adequate) visibility. Any chance we will get to see some of the other versions? I would love to see the process it went through.

Ryan de Haas

The Combine is pleased with these developments. Now we need the Hero Panther with Two Big PPCs to show Liao who wields the bigger guns. This is the only goal of the Combine

you just want a G1 Megatron style Fusion Cannon don't you?

James Abbot-Cole

Niiice. Been waitin for this one. Never liked the panther like face but you make it work and make it look cool as well.

Tyler Erickson

Looks a bit on the heavy side IMHO. Also agree that the PPC looks to be one segment too long.

Andrew Tate

Noooooooo!!! I only ordered 1 striker lance... I NEED MORE NOW. (and i'm no drac fanboi)

Swen Decker

PPC Barrel too long, the emitter should stop parallel with the knuckles of a closed fist

James Bixby

Being totally-not-a-Davion-fanboy, I think the PPC needs to be longer and bigger - much much bigger! :P In truth, I do like it the way it is, given it's so much of the mech's mass. Kudos on the cockpit, too - definitely intimidating.

Zachary Parliman

I'm also on that one, so 🤞

I, too, agree with moving the PPC backward, and I see from the comments that's in the works. What I love is that the overall design team is going for consistent appearance of weapons- which is a very cool change that will add to the versimilitude of the universe and a more consistent feel to the artwork. As attached as I am to the original art, this is a great direction to move in, and it's avoiding the pitfalls of the MWO designs.

I agree they should be roughly similar. but there are way sf mounting things which accentuate or reduce the obviousness of it. Plus unless I've lost my eye fr scale/proportion... I'd note this to appear one heck of a lot larger than the PPC the Marauder packs in the new version......

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

I agree with the need for the PPC to be shifted back for lore reasons. Otherwise a perfect "Alley Cat."

Mitchell Berthelson

I wouldn't mind if the PPC was a hair smaller, but I like that weapons will have more consistent sizes this go-around. You guys done good. Looking forward to the render.

Mike

Even my Davion ass was like "Fuckin' nice." I can't wait to loot one off of a Kuritan.

So, this seems like it is a disagreeable opinion, but I REALLY like the big 'peep on the right arm. I could agree with some folks wanting to move it back on the elbow a little bit, but I think it is good to have a big main gun like that. The gun, and the head are exceptional, and overall I really like the design. The only real critique I have is that the rest of the body looks... same-y. It is a good looking same-y, and there is something to be said for "if it ain't broke don't fix it" - but I would like to see a little monkeying done on the body/legs - just to make the silhouette a little more distinct (ala the Fourth Edition Panther, as shown on the Sarna Panther page)

9/10, would flambe within again!

Terence Harris

Cant wait to paint this one up in Sword of Light colors, I hope your new wolfhound matches the aggressive look of this one!

Robert Moore

Love this. All the hardest parts to nail were NAILED. The head, those spindly little legs. Both were updated or beefed up- but without it making it look like a heavy. 9.5/10 dragonic purrs

I think the PPC is way too large on this one. Love the rest of the working on it. Hard to see how long it extends on the arm itself but it looks unwieldy to me. I would remodel with the rounded tip starting just slightly above the join (half way with the four black blocks) Head looks fantastic

Martin Sweeney

I have to agree that everything looks good except the PPC barrel is too long. It gives the mech a comically goofy look because of the exaggerated proportion.

I like this a lot. The stocky build makes it look like it matches its in game movement profile. I agree with what has been said before by others about the positioning of the PPC. If I remember right I think the lore for the Lord's Light PPC states that it was so compact it could be fitted to the Panther without causing it the use of its hand. Having the gun mounted with part of the assembly going back past the elbow would better reflect this. I know this sounds drastic, but could the PPC be mounted on the Panther's bicep like with Starscream and the Seekers in G1 transformers?

Nyxus

Love it

Love it. If I were to recommend any changes, possibly increase the height of the head slightly, decrease the size of the lower legs very slightly, and slide the PPC back a touch.

Joe M Emmert

I like the Panther very much...even if I´m not the biggest fan due to his slow speed as a light. Opposed to most of the people here commenting on the PPC I like the approach of keeping up with scale not only regarding the mechs but also the weaponry. Why shorten a PPC or making it smaller...a PPC should be roughly the same size with all mechs. And incorporating some parts into the arm would make some of the repairs in-game much more complicated. I vote for keeping the PPC and the mech as it is.

Henning Boessler

I would agree with the PPC looking a little large. A slight reduction in size, and/or shifted placement back on the arm would help on the size. I think also either raising the arm up a little bit, or bending the elbow, so that the barrel is pointing a more forward, rather than angled towards the ground would give a little more of a dynamic pose. Right now it kinda has a "waiting do to something" rather than a "I'm in the middle of combat" feel to it, if that makes sense. Overall though, I like the redesign.

Have to agree with the slide it back a little sticking out behind the elbow. But overall I like the redesign. The head I can live with but it is my least favorite part of the revamp.

We're trying to keep somewhat consistent weapon sizes on our new designs, so PPCs have to be a lot bigger on light mechs than the old art depicts. 20% of the mechs weight is in that weapon.

Anthony Scroggins

Maybe, though we can never pull it back enough to get close to balance either.

Anthony Scroggins

Big on a light mech. They're huge on the Adder too.

Anthony Scroggins

I dunno about Dale, but I didn't look at the MWDA one at all.

Anthony Scroggins

For all the bulk we've been giving the lights, this one fits it well I think as it's a slower light. Though we've got other lights that are much bulkier.

Anthony Scroggins

I'm loving all but the PPC on this. I think the PPC barrel is too long. Chopping off the first segment of the barrel, or sliding it back more on the arm so it only sticks out to that first segment line would make this perfect. The head looks great, and I like how it's a little bulkier than the original but still has that lean light mech feel.

PPC should be pulled back some, looks very unbalanced. Otherwise, I like it

Benjamin Myers (Bishop Steiner)

Looks awesome. Is the ppc barrel bigger than normal or does it just look bigger cause its strapped to a light mech?

Christopher Eastwood

This honors the dragon

Jordan G Roberts

Very nice work there. Although I have to ask if the MWDA Panther influenced the head at all with the large mouth/canopy?

Alex F

I think it’s near perfect, maybe a bit bulky, but it has a fantastic head!
