Ebon Jaguar

Time for a good one. The Ebon Jaguar / Cauldron Born.
I tend to go back and forth on which side of Clan mech names I use because I often pick the shorter or catchier of the two.
So why does this mech have to have two long names that are half cool half weird? D:

Mech sure looks cool though, and I got more gains out of this redesign than I thought I would. When I last tackled it on the Forever Faithful book cover it was still kinda derpy looking.
I think it's a mech that absolutely looks better when given a pelvis and substantially more height.

I didn't do any horizontal upper leg trickery here to limit the height gains because what we're finding is you just can't pose those kind of legs. They immediately hit the torso when walking, forcing a more upright pose. If we're gonna be forced into a more upright pose anyway, might as well design it from the start to look good that way.

My favorite Clan mech after the Shadowcat! I think you did a fantastic job!!!!!! I can't wait to see some of the variants!

Joshua Bressel

One of my favorite Clan mechs. Initially I didn't like the the added height, but the more I look at it, the more I like it. The MWO version seems too tall and lanky, but what you've done here works. I wonder if angling the lower front of the nose cone inward a bit might help this look more aggressive, like a jaguar ready to pounce? I really love what you did with the LRM launcher on this. The old version was terrible, and your take on it is spot on perfect.

The Ebon Jaguar has always reminded me of the crab only wider and squatter like the King Crab. the problem here is that I always wanted to use it and could never bring myself to the point of buying one. while this one still reminds me a little of the Crab (which I believe is the intent here) it also invokes a kind of "Timber Wolf" look and feel to it. I like it and will have to see how many I want.

Jeffery Smith

If the P.T.B. decide on the human stalker legs, I am rioting. It looks entirely too good not to have.

Anthony - Could you include a back shot of the Crusader with your next post? Also, did the powers that be decide which Stalker legs to go with?

Mike

Ebon P-51?

is it bad I would rather this beast have a bubble cockpit that is further back on the fuselage?

James Bixby

This is a vast improvement over the current miniature. This I’ll spend money on.

I was super worried about this one because it's so easy to deviate from the original design in a way that looks good *but* loses the stuff that made the original design notable/unique/appealing. This is especially the case with the MWO design, which looks quite good but... also just looks like a slightly sprightlier Timber Wolf. It minimizes the flat nose, brings the arms closer into the torso, makes it stand more upright, and makes the shoulder weapons much smaller. Like I said, good-looking, but not really an Ebon Jaguar. This design splits the difference: it is more hunched than MWO but not *so* hunched that it has the wide squatting stance of the original (thanks to having no pelvis/waist). It has those enormous, wide arms that scare the bejeezus out of anyone who sees them. It has the flat nose (THANK YOU), and the rear cowl, and it has significant/prominent shoulder weapons that are still reasonably smaller than they are in the original version. It looks definitively like an Ebon Jaguar, but it's also clearly an upgrade/tweak to bring it in line with the other redesigns. I love it. If this is what you can do with an already good-looking design, I am excited to see what you can do with something like the Black Lanner.

Cauldron Born's always had a cut off at the "nose" on every rendition, this is likely just the one time it's incredibly pronounced because of how vertical it is. I say keep it.

Malintus

Overall I like it. The old artwork was always odd to me. Have to agree with the nose comment though. Feels cut off at the moment

The Ebon Jaguar has always been a mech I've liked the idea of, but felt a little off to me. Your rendition definitely fixes the issues I've had with it in the past. I like that the arms are beefed up, so it doesn't feel as unnecessarily wide. Like always, instantly recognizable but way cooler than the original art.

Ryan de Haas

It has never had a nose cone.

Anthony Scroggins

Almost any mech can go low, they just squat. Any chance at proper concealment requires the use of cover, and when you involve that the default leg strance is barely a factor. Not looking terrible, and being mechanically viable comes first here.

Anthony Scroggins

I really like it but it needs the nosecone.

Steven Cross

I can see the Cauldron-Born/Kingfisher connection. This feels more like a kingfisher (esp. the long "beak"), while the actual Kingfisher feels more like a proper "undead warrior" given its standard engine and hunched, bulky look.

Zachary Parliman

Always thought "Cauldron-Born" was better than "Ebon Jaguar" because it just sounds cooler and more intimidating and because of the reference to the Chronicles of Prydain. Definitely agree with making it taller - the original looked like someone whacked it with a circus hammer.

Zachary Parliman

Most Ebon Jaguars have looked fishlike, which makes me like the theory that the “Cauldron-Born” and “Kingfisher” names got switched in production, and also means I’m definitely getting one for my Diamond Sharks. The change to the nose makes it fit its clan name (and clan) better. I love the legs, and the use of circles in several places. I agree with the comments saying it feels front heavy, at least from this angle. But it’s a great one. Definitely still getting it even if it isn’t as fishy anymore.

Carlos Sempere

Speaking exclusively to the cauldron born I agree. I cant tell if it's the perspective or what. Each piece looks good but together it looks too forward heavy and unbalanced. Maybe you're purposely showing too much of the right arm. The upper portion does need to be pushed back a smidge or the rear torso extended and the arms shortened a bit.

Christopher Eastwood

This one has a similar feel to the longbow to me - overall I like the individual components, but how they come together feels... funny. It does not look like a naturally balanced machine. The hips are behind the feet, and to counteract that, the arms and nose are way forward of the feet - and while it would stand up - it just feels a little off to me. I would like to see it in 3d, just to get a better feel of the proportions of the mech - and maybe see about monkeying with the position of the feet with relation to hips, and shoulder location on the arms (arms feel really far forward - but it could just be t-pose). Only critique I have on the components is the nose - I actually like the flat nature, but would be curious to see what it would look like at an angle as opposed to perpendicular (like MW4). As a side note - the asymmetric cockpit of MW4 was wicked cool, and not enough mechs have that.

Perfect

Taylor Shead

I love this. It looks way better than the mwo variation for sure. Those long gun arms look menacing.

Alexander J De Santis

It looks good.....but remember, this guy is supposed to be a spotter/scout/sniper. It's supposed to be very low slung, to take advantage of cover and concealment! I think the extra height is a mistake.

Joshua Bressel

I've never seen a fist on this Mech

Raymond White

You removed the fist?

Tyler Erickson

Nice design, at first i thought the SRM is too huge, but i realised that this has always been. But the real love is that legs. Dayum EbonJag you got some nice legs.

Swen Decker

Designer to engineer: Now make it have a really long torso. "Ok." Designer: No thats too long, cut the tip off. "Ok" *takes it literally*

Swen Decker

I love it. It looks like it can actually, you know, walk.

Chris L

It looks much better, I get that the original designer may have wanted to differentiate it from the other clan mechs by making it more squat, but honestly it looked like it couldn't support it's own weight. When I first saw the original model I thought it was a Stone Rhino/ Behemoth based on that mech's origin fluff. This is worthy of carrying the name Cauldron-Born

Nyxus

One of the best things you do in all the redesigns is to take into account would this mech be mechanically viable. It's great. I hope FASA, whoops Catalyst Games is aware of how much you are improving this game.

James Doughty

Looks great, it's been a personal favourite since I played a clan MechWarrior piloting one in an RPG campaign, and it looks a ton better with hips and pelvis. The arm guns look a touch long, but it might just be angle again!
