Orion New Head
Added 2020-01-14 09:18:04 +0000 UTC
Here's the final Orion model, pending any final tweaks.
Hopefully final cockpit included too, which came about from a few more rounds of internal discussion.
(Insert salty youtuber memes about patron feedback cycles here)
I still prefer my original sketch design, but I'm ok with this look.
Like it?
Love it! I can't wait to see the Orion Kerensky!

I absolutely love this as a IIC model. Almost makes me want to be a Clanner.

This is excellent. I agree with Luke, the metal sculpts look goofy. You've done an excellent job. I'm so glad that I ordered this lance. Well done.

The more I look at this the more I like it. Always thought the old art/model made a mech that is the Great Kerensky's ride look super goofy. Not so goofy looking anymore.

That's sexy, I'm gonna need 4!

While I did vote for the newer head in your sketch, I find this to be a fair compromise for those who wanted a newer cockpit and those who wanted to keep to the original model's head design.
Eagerly awaiting the Direct Fire Lance model pics

Looks stunning, excellent work. It was a good choice going with that cockpit design. Well done!

Okay Anthony, I need another hit.

This change was firstly about having the center bar. If that wasn't required we'd just have my original design.

As much as I love the Orion, I'm just not digging this new cockpit at all. It throws the entire thing off for me for some reason. Maybe it's just the angle.
2020-01-15 02:05:48 +0000 UTC
I like it, looking at it though I feel like it's a brand new mech, not an Orion.

Out of interest, was there ever a case of "yeah, we wanted that, but then we put it to a vote, and the BattleTech community wanted the other thing, so we accepted the vote and made the change". I am getting a bit frustrated with getting asked for feedback, but just for the purpose "nice we had a conversation".
2020-01-15 00:18:40 +0000 UTC
It has always been in the torso per the stats. It being depicted in the arm visually was a mistake. Later variants do add arm SRMs.
Anthony Scroggins
2020-01-14 23:35:43 +0000 UTC
Wait, the SRM4 is supposed to be in the arm which is the reason for the arm being bigger but here it is not. I think it should either be moved to arm proper or the arm should be made smaller like the other.

There kinda is. Making the slit glass will be a fan option, not canon.

I absolutely adore this cockpit! It's got that sexy F-117 stealth fighter vibe with the right amount of the classic forms. The NuHead didn't quite read as an Orion to me, but that could have been the angle.
2020-01-14 22:32:38 +0000 UTC
I like it just because it's Orion but that head/cockpit... still doesn't fell that good as the voted one (NuHead).

I guess that'll do.

Oh look... an overweight Anzu!!!!!!
Original Cockpit was best cockpit... didn't it also get the most votes in the previous posting?
Guess Ray/Brent/Randall are like Battletech's own Electoral College.... People vote for something? Meh... naw my Special Interest wants something else, lol.

Yeah, they are both medium lasers too, right? Which... I always thought they were both HUGE arms for mere medium lasers.

Love it. The Orion is the mech I always wished was as cool on tabletop as it was everywhere else, and this is finally it.

Sorry dude but "ick". Seriously the whole "people don't know what they want until we tell them" bull that corporations seem to go by has a habit of messing stuff up.

It doesn’t excite me the way the new head did, but it’s still very good. It’s a sufficiently historical mech out-of-universe that I understand the decision.

at this point the only thing I wish would die in a fire is the Orion having asymmetrical arms. 36 years and that feature never made sense to me.

I'm starting to get worried this will become a trend

I like it! Looks like an Orion and I can see the various source influences.

My first thought was "Why does it have two left arms?" Then I realized the bigger weapon was a torso mount. :)
2020-01-14 12:40:45 +0000 UTC
No. Putting a blind spot directly in front of the pilot gets them killed.
2020-01-14 12:39:52 +0000 UTC
I like it. Still close to the nu-head design, and it does away with the vertical bar down directly in front of the pilot (YAY!) and provides a lot of situational awareness. I love a mech with a clearly designed pilot location.
2020-01-14 12:39:17 +0000 UTC
^ ok good, I am not alone :)
2020-01-14 12:38:15 +0000 UTC
The original looked better.
2020-01-14 12:34:13 +0000 UTC
If we scream that we hate it, can we talk bosses into changing it? It’s not bad - but a disappointment compared to the awesomeness that was your other one.

I really like this. Projects a far tougher look and feel for the Orion as opposed to the original pose. I did prefer the sleek cockpit but I'm happy with this latest render and would certainly purchase.

I think this one is not nearly as nice as the new head everyone liked. The new design is what got me excited about the new designs. Now just disappointed in Catalyst. I think they made the wrong decision.

2020-01-14 11:34:04 +0000 UTC
Oh no! What happened!? Definitely the original sketch with the sleek cockpit was the best one. Had me all excited for my favorite mech... hopefully you can nudge them back to your original sketch. Maybe if you render it to see how it looks...or leak an stl with it.... ;)
2020-01-14 11:32:32 +0000 UTC
I enjoy it. I like the original "new" cockpit the most, but this is still fine.

2020-01-14 11:30:59 +0000 UTC
Seeing it all fleshed out and in 3D, I can see a more direct evolution from the primitive Orion to this. I too liked the sketch version’s canopy, but this is still cool and I like options for painting, so I may have to get a couple to experiment with. Will there be a version of this in Alexandr Kerensky’s retconned configuration?

I REALLY like this cockpit. Keeps a strong semblance to the original design while eliminating the silliness of the bar down the middle. It's a good compromise between the previous two options and ends up looking better than both in my opinion.

I really like it a lot. It is a kind of old-school Orion, but somewhat "modernized" (sorry for my mediocre english) and looking overall homogenous. No sticky arms and all - it looks like the Heavy it should have been in the past miniature-wise.

I love it myself. It's a great update that keeps the key look and aesthetics of the original without going fullblown slavish adherence.

Yeah if I can get it to stay this way. You can pick between a slit of glass, or a thick bar.
Anthony Scroggins
2020-01-14 09:43:04 +0000 UTC
I like that you managed to get the best of both worlds. Personally I don't like cockpit windows having a bar running down the center of them so it is good that you were able to make the "bar" be another glass panel

If I recall I think I preferred your other version too, but this is still worlds better than the old “come at me” Orion. Nice work as always.

Like it. There's a lot of streamlining (looking at the right shoulder) that I really appreciate - it seems to really stand out on the old mini for some reason! Modern, but instantly recognisable as an Orion.
