Longbow Concept Sketch

It's missile massacre time!
Taking on this lance of Longbow, Stalker, Zeus, and Trebuchet would be brutal. Add a few jumpy battle armor guiding indirect fire and you're definitely toast.

I'm sure many of you can guess the process already, I pick what I consider all the good bits of various design versions and jam them all together with a nice spin.

Can you spot all the sources yourself?
I'll give you the meta one. To honor old inter-mech lineages within our new set, I referenced my Warhammer leg details.

Longbow Concept Sketch

Comments

Love! Love! Love! Love!

Joshua Bressel

I LOVE THIS, Looks like this could be the Mech that Clan Wolf Based the Woodsman/ Naga mechs on.

Jeffery Smith

Ok, that's great! But... I'm having a bit of trouble visualizing how you're going to translate from the radar dishes to antennae....

Joshua Bressel

Love it...

On a completely different note, you gotta make them post the Gargoyle line art, Anthony. Sheemateez. What are they doing over there?

Mike

Reminds me of like a B-52 bomber or similar vibe

Its in a great spot, I love it but less clunky MWO type armor panels would go a long way. Great job so far.

Andrew McKenna

I love the fighter jet feel of the cockpit.

Nah I really like the MW4 model. I just felt for all the times I go heavy on MW4 looks, this wasn't the time for it.

Anthony Scroggins

Probably unpopular opinion here. Always hated the unseen longbow, really digged the MW4 style longbow/LGB-7Q sculpt/MWDA style. I would prefer something that looks a bit like those more but I know that's not gonna happen. I do notice the LRM5s sourced from this design though.

Taylor Shead

I can see the talent and hard work that went into the design, I wish there was more influence from the TRO 3058 mini in there.

James Bixby

We're gonna switch the radar dishes to antenna, just didn't draw that in yet :D Also, I didn't look at the primitive at all haha. Didn't see any parts on it that were better than other versions.

Anthony Scroggins

Wanted to mix it up and reference the phoenix design. Also helps the mech fit in packaging and cast better.

Anthony Scroggins

Gotta chunk it up otherwise you get this thin mech carrying super big and wide missile pods. Scale is an easy solution, we just make it not as tall as other assaults.

Anthony Scroggins

I'm not sure what you mean about the cockpit glass, they all have different panel configurations. Keep in mind we've got 100 mechs on the redesign list so far, making similarities unavoidable too.

Anthony Scroggins

I have Alan Blackwell managing that one. I'll make sure he does a good job :)

Anthony Scroggins

No intention with the lower boxes on the launchers :P And yeah the tubes are big, but people would want the arms big if possible, so I bulk up the mechanical space. The missiles themselves can still be sized down. Will cast better too.

Anthony Scroggins

That thing is hideous. I love it.

Joe M Emmert

Fair point on the cockpit, though sometimes I do like heavily modular looks. Easy repairs.

Anthony Scroggins

I get what you mean on the proportions, this is a tough mech to sort out because of how wide it is. Luckily that's easy to play with in 3D if we think we can improve it along the way.

Anthony Scroggins

The longbow was the first mech I ever purchased (~1989). Still one of my favorite designs to this day. You've successfully paid homage to the original artwork while incorporating details that allude to the other longbow iterations (especially the primitive version). I'm also pleased that your design will more accurately reflect the mechs stat's. I particularly like the rounded cylinders on the mechs arms. It makes it look like a jet engine of doom! How well will that antenna style work with plastic casting? From this angle it looks like the dish could be quite thin and brittle.

I love the Warhammer legs, the little LRM 5's from the 3058 art actually look good here, and that sensor dish is awesome.

Chris L

Not a fan of the dual bay doors on the missile racks but that’s me.

The Longbow's one of my favorite mechs, and I think you're doing it justice. It feels very much like an artillery boat, and I definitely like the protruding torso look much more than the original, more humanoid look. I do agree with some of the other comments, though - the proportions feel a little off. If I had to put my finger on it, I'd say it feels a bit chunky, primarily around the feet, the missile pods, the cockpit, the laser mounts, and even the radar dish. As it is, I'd say it looks like it weighs 100 tons, not 85. Still, it's looking good!

Zachary Parliman

Great stuff. The Whammy legs also make sense because they're both built by StarCorp. Bravo.

Mitchell Berthelson

I see a lot of the 7Q Longbow from 3058 in the torso. I'm glad you referenced the Warhammer legs to tie it together for legacy. But I have to say that seeing the same cockpit glass on so many 'mechs is giving them the feel of being generic. You have the same pattern on the Orion, Ostsol, and somewhat the Behemoth.

I'm curious to see the Trebuchet. I like it plenty as a mech, but I've always felt the 7-ton LRM-15 box at the end of the arm was goofy. I liked the look of the miniatures with what I deemed an LRM-5 on the arm, so I created a -9N2.

Mike

Yeah, the Warhammer legs stand out. I'm also seeing Zeus, Linebacker, Atlas/Crusader. The tubes seem oversized since this is an 85-tonner. They seem more like SRMs than LRMs. The bulges on the bottom of the arms seem different than the others, implying that they're sensors, but they seem blocked by the lower bay doors. I understand trying not to lean into the Phalanx - Nostalgia Me loves the Phalanx - but in this case, Catapult doors have an advantage. I agree with Swen that the cockpit doesn't quite feel integrated. I'm not in love with it, but it does have a presence, which is what I was hoping for. The Fire Lance is shaping up nicely.

Mike

Very good sketch, perhaps tilting the arms upwards as if it was going to fire off the LRMs indirectly.

Trevor R.N.

I love the longbow and you have done justice with this one. Bravo πŸ‘ Sir Bravo!

Robert Moore

Finally a Longbow with LRM5s i dont have to model on.^^ Overall a really damn beauty beast. Has a breastplate (with 4 bolts, lovely) has a radar dish, has turbine lrm arms, has whammylike legs/lower torso. Just the cockpit looks like its a detachable spacecraft somehow. A bit like "oh i forgot a cockpit, lets just bolt this on", maybe a bit to near to the front too.

Swen Decker

So, take my two cents with a grain of salt. This is one of the only ones I am not absolutely crazy about... but I am not sure why. I love all of the design elements, but maybe the proportions feel a little funny? I love the β€œnose” of it (would like to see it stretch out a little more), I love the old school WW2 bomber cockpit feel, I love the radar looking thingy on top of the head, love the shape of the legs and feet (feet feel a little large to me?) love the shapes of the arms (also feel a little large?) - TLDR - I am absolutely in love with all of the components, but some of the proportions just feel a little funny. (I still really love the feel of β€œTHIS IS HEAVY ARTILLERY BABY!!!”)

The main weakness of the design is being so wide without much depth. Previous canon designs have solved that by shrinking the arms way down but I didn't want to remove the massive launcher look. So I took what the phoenix and MW4 versions did, adding more torso depth. I also don't want to lean into the macross mech, not our stuff.

Anthony Scroggins

Hmm... I’m not really feeling the protruding center torso (de-emphasizes the arm pods, imo) and modern-looking head here, despite having liked the head concept on the Orion. Nor the LRM-5s pointing at another angle than the LRM-20s, but any modeler can fix that by rotating the latter. The arms and legs are great, though!

Carlos Sempere

Not bad.

Tyler Erickson

Haha, good chance IWM will make those recovered tech versions.

Anthony Scroggins

Be still my heart...

That's absolutely awesome. :D

The DRT

Oh wow, awesome design

While it does look pretty cool (everything having Warhammer design bits is) I'd really love to see more missile tubes in the arms.

Peter Holthaus

Very cool :)

Love this one.
