Atlas 3D Model

You've been asking for it, here it is finally finished!

This Atlas model sat on ice for a bit while we finalized Wave One sculpts and TRO lineart, but Alan Blackwell and I got back to meticulously finishing this model off (I really ran him through a gauntlet of micro edits). As one of the most iconic Battletech mechs it has to be perfect. I think we came close.

Do you accept your new overlord?

I'm looking at them side by side now. As I continue looking at it, I feel the arms are out of proportion as well. Like they're too long, it looks like the fists would sit by the knees if the arms were straight down. The sketch from awhile back has more teeth. The 3d model almost looks like it has buck teeth. That may have been changed for modelling purposes? If that's the case, losing the things on the side for more teeth would make that smile scarier. Overall, I have to say I really prefer the original sketch over this. Keep at it though! I have faith!

Yeah. Now that i've spent a bit of time looking at it, I agree with Brian. Especially the mouth... Not sure what those are supposed to be on the ends, but they look out of place. And the Xs are what I hated about the MWO stuff. The eyes, at least from this point of view, look soulless, but in the zombified, lack of intelligence way, not angry. That head just doesn't look intimidating to me at all. I'm saying all this out of love for one of my favorite mechs, not just to nit pick, by the way. The torso looks too small for the mech as well. I think I actually preferred the last version I saw over this one. The AC20 in particular I think is riding too high up. Maybe flip the barrel with the smaller circular thing below it, so the barrel is on the bottom?

Unfortunately for you all the preferences you listed were very deliberate changes by me :D I did a lot of exploring on the face to come up with the best all around look, as the most subtle angle changes completely change the expression on the mech. I have it intentionally expressionless, a dead face as it comes to kill you. It does actually have angry eyes though, they're just subtle.

Anthony Scroggins

All I can say is, in scale.

Anthony Scroggins

The curved line across the head? That's always been on the Atlas.

Anthony Scroggins

Soon enough, Orion isn't quite done.

Anthony Scroggins

This is the stock loadout. The LRM20 chain fires from 5 tubes.

Anthony Scroggins

This one shares a lot of details from the box cover Atlas, main thing though is I deliberately didn't go the MWO route on the head. That alone is the most polarizing. I wanted this one to look classic though.

Anthony Scroggins

My concern with a power pose is that's what the Atlas sculpt has always had, and more importantly when possible I like the pose to depict a common action of the mech. And you bet ya the Atlas is going to spend most of it's life trying to close with the enemy haha.

More feedback on the face now that I'm on a computer: The eyes look surprised, not fierce. It should have the appearance that it's glaring at you. The taper inward at the top is wrong and somewhat the sides. The top should cut straight in, parallel to the ground. The sides should be less severe, if not straight in as well. If necessary, don't recess the glass so much. Then put a good downward slant at the bottoms, from the side to center. The sides of the "mouth" look rounded, like a doll with blushing cheeks. Change the pattern inside of the hexagons (preferrably get rid of the hexagons). You've got this "/\_ _ _/\" instead of the original "\\\_ _ _///". The original is better by far. Oh, and there are X's on the upper thighs. They're taking up good decal space. As I said on the Loki, X's on armor are overused. Save them for CASE panels on the back of designs that have CASE.

How large will the model be in comparison to the mini's from the latest boxed set?

I like the art. However, the eyes are too big and square for my tastes. An hexagonal shape may look better. Anyway, kudos for the LRM/SRM setup.

There's nothing wrong with the LRM. Even MWO uses that ripple-fire functionality on several of it's designs.

I don't know of anything that says it can or can't. The current metal mini has a separate head so it can be posed. It's a great option.

Like the bore should be more cylindrical than conical?

The general shape is great, the proportions are just right. But id change the weapons a bit, the ac looks like its a stolen ac10 from an urbie and i dont like the lrm5 (but it shoots 4x faster hurrdurr) thingy. That was always a bad excuse for mismatching art and i think that should have been corrected this time.

Swen Decker

Funny. I saw the dish as a daisy.

Oh, neat. I had not realized the head could rotate. But yeah, now that you point that out, cool. Head down in the collar for cover....

Right? Like the bottom shoulder plate should slide under the upper one, so it can raise it's arms higher to the sides.

Can the Atlas turn its head? I always thought the cockpit was fixed. Makes for some more interesting poses if it can, I just did not realize that functionality was there.

I think the AC20 has something wrong with it. I dont have an issue with the stubbyness. I think its the inside of the barrel. The fact that it starts out with the small circle in the back of the barrel and then gets larger is just wrong and makes it look weird.

Not a huge fan of the what James as a vents in the jaw line there. Makes is look more like a Jack-o-lantern in a negative way if that makes sense. The Radar dish on the head looks like a lego piece to me, and the AC 20 (assuming it's the 20 barrel anyways) looks stubby to me. Sorry Anthony, this is the first one that I've felt the desire to comment on negatives this much.

Paul Mabbott

Looks great but that line above the eyes makes it look like it has a hair line.

Charles granger

Looking good, but can we get another angle? A head on shot "eye to eye" is often where an Atlas design really shines.

Mitchell Berthelson

A True Steiner Recon mech! Can we get a group shot of the direct fire lance? I can't wait to see the Orion and Crusader final render!

Robert Moore

The "eyes" aren't doing it for me. The symmetrical shape looks neutral. Previous artwork had them slanted across the bottom. That made it look a little more mean. I do really like the rotation ring of the head/cockpit. Three-fingered hands look better for a bruiser like the Atlas.

I know im being very fastidious, but whats the loadout will it fit the orginal or at least one of the record sheets?

the heat vents on the "Jowels" are a nice touch, I do love how the soulders are less pronounced/slimmer and how every part of this looks like it has about six inches of armor surrounding it. I wish the semi external ammo feed of the autocannon was still present and the gun itself was slung a little lower towards the hip rather then halfway up the chest. it is just a visual feature I like.

James Bixby

Sticking with the D Model! Mad Respect! or are you putting streak 2's on he back and making it the S Model?

James Bixby

THE DREAD PIRATE ATLAS HAS COME FOR YOUR SOULS.

Terence Harris

Looking at proportions and details, I'd say that I like the MWO design more, as and alternative the Atlas on the cover of earlier box set is perfect as well. But gess you have enough positive opinions to get this one into to production.

“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”

It seems to me that the arms are a bit slim and likely hampered by the massive shoulder plates in the design goal of "being able to lift a 20t Mech and throw it over its head". But otherwise it's looking spectacular.

Peter Holthaus

O lawd, he thicc!

David

I do like the infantry-eye view. :)

Big stompy skull face mech has a flower in it's hair. :) I think the dish may be a little oversize. 12 year old me wants to make the codpiece bigger. Armorer me thinks the shoulder caps are not going to allow the arms to raise at any higher an angle than they are already at. I kind of think the lower half of the shoulder cap should clearly be a tighter radius than the upper half, so that the lower half can slide up under the upper half to improve arm mobility. For a move visual idea of what I'm trying to describe, see this pic of the retractable roof of Miller Field: https://bit.ly/2CRe7BP

I actually really love the model. Was not sure I would from the art (MWO Atlas was one of my faves) but I do. Great blend of old and new. One thing I would critique though is the pose - it seems... off. Atlas feels like it needs more of a POWER STANCE as opposed to an action shot... something to accentuate it bigness, like “I own this battlefield and I ain’t scared of crap” *think something like a martial arts ready stance - legs wide, arms at 90 degrees pointing at Target - head forward - this is one model that really seems like it could afford to flex and do a more static pose*

I thought you guys might be a little bored of so many high angle "miniature" shots that I went low angle on this one.

Anthony Scroggins

@Anthony S. With the mounting top for antennas I’m as sound as a pound!

Jakob Fredensborg

Should be able to chop off the dish without much trouble. It has mounting points for whip antenna too :)

Anthony Scroggins

Looks cool so far...but i must admit, like some others before, that the shot from groud level is a bit confusing. I really like the massive legs and that huge AC. Only the LRM is looking a bit small. Cool mini!

Henning Boessler

I like that its a cool blend, in my mind, between the old and the new. I was never a fan of the satellite dish on the head though, there I would have preferred the MWO antennas :). Otherwise I’m looking forward to seeing more pics and art!

Jakob Fredensborg

IMO any previous Atlas that can be perceived as grinning is not intentional. The majority have a grim face and all of them have a flat tooth line.

Anthony Scroggins

Would prefer seeing it small like a mini? :D

Anthony Scroggins

I'm digging it but I don't think the Angle the camera is at is doing it justice.

@Anthony - that might be it - it's not an angle we're used to seeing mechs at after all. What's going on with the mouth? It looks kind of sneery rather than grinning from here.

Andrew Dickinson

Completely ground level shot, it's as leggy a view as you can get. Trust me it's got a huge body :)

Anthony Scroggins

Thicc boy! He does look like he's saying "BOY! DON'T MAKE ME COME OVER THERE!"

Steven Cross

Honestly.... Really not a fan of this one. Torso looks too small and legs too big - more angles may help though.

Andrew Dickinson
