Highlander Concept Sketch

There can only be one.

This one might raise a good discussion.
It is my theory that even the lovers of the classic look Highlander, along with everyone else, have been sitting comfy on that FAT sexy MWO highlander design for 4 years and we're now subconsciously expecting a big beefy mech that certainly looks like it'll crush you with a sweet highlander burial.

But the classic highlander isn't a big boy, in fact it's one of the slimmer more cleanly figured assault mechs. It's not very elaborate or fancy. It has it's TV head and leg shock absorbing systems, but is otherwise very unremarkable in design.

So, did I do good? I've tried to make it look modern without slapping the chonk filter on it like I have with many others.

You fixed the tiny flipper of a right arm which was the main issue with the original. The 2 tongs that generally are depicted on the right arm could be more pronounced that's about it.

Steve McNabb

Stunning, all time Favorite rendition of my all time favorite mech! As others have said beef up the legs and kness. But either way hawt!

I definitely like it. I think I would like it to be a *bit* fatter, but overall, it's still great. :D

The DRT

Looking at this one again, where did you hide the medium lasers? Are they in the rear?

Mike

You did great, gotta have those beef cake legs though!

Yes. Just.... just yes.

Jarod DePastene

I think your design captures the mech well. It has a leaner look than most assault mechs. my only thought is the legs should be slightly heavier due to the extra reinforcement due to the "Highlander Burial" DFA move. I cannot wait to see your version of the Mongoose. It is my favorite Star League era mech and in my top 5 all time favorites. your designs are amazing.

*Full disclosure - the MWO Highlander is one of my all-time favorite mech designs* - I like the overall direction you are headed with it - the hooves and the head draw more from the original designs which I like a lot. I think the proportions could me monkeyed with a bit to hit that "perfect" design... I think the legs could use some more oomph to them - and maybe back the noggin down 10% or so in size - but thats really all I have opinion wise on it. The shapes and everything are great - and so is the design language. I would just like to see a little proportion "fiddling"

I’d like to see more of the new IWM model in this one.

Richard Jensen

I'll buy that for $5. Good job on this one.

I would like a bit more beef on the legs, but I love it! Looks even better than the new IWM, and the MWO!

Joshua Bressel

I like the picture. I would like to see the gauss "claw" on the end of the rifle. This always made sense to me to try and protect the barrel. I would also like to see a little more "point" on the hooves of the feet. I agree the legs could be SLIGHTLY beefier but overall I like your design. This is my favorite mech thanks for spending time with it!

Todd W

Awesome. A true Prince of the Universe right there. :)

Mitchell Berthelson

To quote the movie of the same name- "There can be only one!" :P Anyways, you did a damn good job on it!

Sapphirus

Gauss are bigger than most autocannons, they need armoring too.

Anthony Scroggins

Almost its entire lower legs are buffer pistons :)

Anthony Scroggins

Jesus that thing is sexy.

jaymes baird

Oh heck yeah. You done good.

Raymond White

I appreciate that you did not apply the Chonk filter. I think Chonk often adds heft to these massive war machines, but has the downside of generating a lack of differentiation among designs. This could definitely do with some more visible leg shock absorbing systems.

Michael Cohen

As a big fan of the IWM sculpts (both the original and the newer resculpts), I think this fits the bill too. To be honest, I always thought the MWO version was *TOO* boxy (or "chonky", as it may be). It has an angular head, but the rest of it is a bit less of the "twenty cardboard boxes stacked onto each other" look of the MWO version and more obviously related to the later Highlander IIC (which has always looked excellent). I love this one.

Robert Schuster

Kinda miss the cone shoulders from the newer IWM redesign. Overall pretty rad.

Jordan G Roberts

I'm a chonk fan myself and I'm not a fan of the humpback look of that right arm, but that indeed is a highlander, no question.

I do not love this one. But I cannot argue with the fact that it very much looks like a Highlander. Probably more like the TRO art than more recent forays into the Highlander design space.

Lexikon

Looks pretty good.

I like it but the knee's don't look right to me . even the resculpt had that knee pad look .

Charles granger

Looks pretty good. I had hoped it would be closer to the resculpted Highlander mini, which is amazing. Unfortunately we never got published art for it.

I love it and you! It is my new watch face.

maybe make the 'fingers', or whatever that protective piece is called that sits on top of the gun on the right arm, a bit more prominant. Maybe just taking the split that I see is there just a little deeper.

Jeffrey

I like this unless that's a gauss, if it is I think it ought to be a bit more narrow or otherwise distinct from the AC.

The original sculpt was very round and fat to me. The later re-sculpt did a good job of removing some of the goofiness I found in the original sculpt. I like this version as well, you did a good job modernizing the mech while keeping its distinctive features. I did not play MWO so don’t compare any of the designs to those (although what I’ve seen of those designs I generally don’t like)

Dan Hegarty

Love it. This mech just shows up for work and gets it done.

Patrick D

Looks good - but I wonder how it would look with a slightly taller /stretched torso/waist/legs, and a narrower ass :D Also - I always thought the Highlander could have some piston shocks at the front of the ankles as well (theoretically for jump jet buffering - but also for extra burial capability!).

Phil

A nice take on the design! Stick some speakers on it and Rhonda Snord would be pleased!

That looks great! I think the legs could be a little thicker and the groin a little narrower, but they're minor complaints!

Andrew Dickinson

That’ll do pi....erhm Anthony, that’ll do. Sufficient sexy fatlander remains

Jakob Fredensborg

I really appreciate your thoughts in the new highlander. The old sculpt was one of my first minis back in the late 90s, when i began playing and it still is one of my favourites. I really like the modernization and not just the copying of the MWO concept. Personally i would like some more beefier legs and knees for a proper highlander burial. Apart from this i really like what you created here!

Henning Boessler

ya did good, kid. ya did good.

David

Very nice, I like how its not as bulky as the MWO design, sort of like the MW2: Mercs Highlander!
