Normally, a regular attack cannot hurt Luffy because his body is made of rubber. For example, at the beginning of the story, when Alvida hit Luffy with a mace, it didn’t hurt him at all, and Luffy said it was because his body was rubber. Garp’s “fists of love,” as he calls them, injured Luffy because he was using Haki.
