It's honestly so interesting to see Ace reverting back to his mindstate when he was a kid; we saw him so angry over his father's legacy, prompting him to start fights with anyone who mentions Roger's name. But we also saw him struggle with his identity leading him to ask If he even had the right to be born. Once he joined Whitebeard it seemed like he had mostly made peace with it, especially after Whitebeard's talk with him when he confessed he was Roger's son. But when he was captured, all this guilt and self-loathing seemed to have taken precendence again. "Why are you here? Go away, I deserve this." It is only now, after he sees how far the people who love him are willing to go to save him, that he realizes how much people care about him. Which is why it is so beautiful to hear him say "I realize that I want to live." It took him a long time to get here, but he finally does.

Gonna write a whole ass essay about aces journey through shame next batch because it’s something I’ve admittedly struggled with and makes me really connect with his character. Love the scene where he sees everyone fighting for him and he exclaims about wanting to live. Something as Roger’s son he probably didn’t think he deserved. But it’s because ace is the ultimate big brother and would go to war for anyone he cares about. Now his family is returning the favor very bittersweet. Lot of parallels to robin honestly too.

Jack my brother, I have to correct you about what you told the boys, that flashback of Garp facing off against Shiki is not filler. That is from an Episode called Episode 0 based off a Chapter 0 that Oda fully wrote, set in the past documenting events from the time Roger was alive. It is canon as Oda confirmed, and the only thing that is not canon is the film Strong World which follows up from Episode 0. However, even the film has elements that are true to One Piece, it's basically the most canon a One Piece film is going to get. Not only that but Episode 0 is super hype. So I would highly recommend you and the boys check out Episode 0 and even Strong World if you want to watch a sort of canon One Piece film.
