I do think Frieren should have passed being that she helped her team come up with a plan for the first test, and also helped a lot in the second test and trained Fern well. We don't really know anything about that war, or whatever it was, when that occurred though.

2025-12-07 22:01:10 +0000 UTCListening to your guys' after discussion made me surprisingly happy... ...and I think I feel that way just because I don't often get to see people giving the same regard for the nature of Fern and Serie's connection through the relationships of Serie, Flamme, and Frieren that you guys appear to. And funny enough, that might be because the show is surprisingly subtle with how it presents the way these characters interact. To this point we've only had small moments within episodes which already capture your attention on their own, and only now are they really brought into focus. Anyway, I'm happy you guys enjoy this show as much as you do.

His signature magic is a spell to incapacitate people without killing them because he regrets having no other option than killing his opponents at times. He says himself he has never failed to kill anyone when necessary, yet he always wishes it won't be necessary so he prefers to bind people. Humanity in this world definitely has an extremely dark side too, it's just not really the focus of the story.

She denied Flammes request to take over the training of humanities mages, but what is she currently doing? She is the leader of the continents mage organization and training first class mages. She mocks Frieren and Flamme for liking a spell that creates a field of flowers, while standing in a field of flowers almost identical to the one Flamme once made. She says she dislikes Frieren but the moment Frieren broke the barrier to greet her she looked happier than we've probably ever seen her. She keeps saying it's a waste of time to take human students, yet she keeps taking on more and more. She says she dislikes Flamme's dream of a world where everyone can use magic, but she still trained Flamme and helped her realize that dream. Elves and other longlived creatures trying to remain emotionally distant from the more short-lived races is a classic fantasy trope(i.e. Elrond telling Arwen to leave Aragorn), and imo it makes a lot of sense. It must be incredibly painful getting close to people, knowing that they will be dead in what feels like a few weeks or months to you, over and over again.

Everything is coming full circle. I need that Frieren and Himmel love fr I also gotta praise my girl Fern. This episode basically confirms that Fern has Flamme’s level of potential of a once in a thousand years talent. Serie sees the value in Fern and considers her to be worthy. Currently Fern as a young mage is more of a prodigy than Lernen (who was the first-first mage) or any other human we've met so far. So crazy! I can’t wait to see how much of a problem she becomes later on

Makes so much sense rewatching it that he reacts that way because it is triggering that memory.

2025-12-06 22:39:16 +0000 UTCI think it’s just very easy for people to bash the first opinions that you guys say about a character, since this is obviously your first time reacting to each episode, where as I would imagine that for a lot of people this is their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, whatever time watching this episode. This makes it very easy to be like “how come you didn’t see the dialogue this way” when I would imagine most people that watched this show, and do think about it in that way, liked the show enough to watch certain episodes multiple times, which gave them that extra insight in the first place (which I say because I’m not sure how often you guys go back and watch episodes or scenes to get a better understanding of a show/plot/characters). I would say that is the definition of hindsight bias. I’m not gonna act like I’ve never been party to that kind of thinking, but I try to be open minded with opinions, especially when I feel like I care more about a show, or I am watching something in a different way vs somebody else.

She thought it was ridiculous Flamme even asked her to be the head of the human's magic association, yet who is it right now? Serie. She said she merely trained Flamme on a whim and act like she didn't care, yet why does she remember everything about Flamme, from her goals, her personality, to her favorite spell. Even in this episode, she said she shouldn't ever take on anymore human apprentices. Yet she wants Fern. And yes, she is that powerful that Frierens full unleashed mana is about the size of Serie's suppressed mana. They said Serie is the closest thing to the omnipotent Goddess of Creation herself.

Because some people don't like Serie, they practically ignore her scenes. Like Serie even said, "Humans learning magic, how ridiculous," and everyone went crazy, saying they don't like her. In contrast, in that very episode, she says humans will militarize magic, and that other countries will then militarize/weaponize it. And then Jack over here is like "Serie is jelous of frieren for killing the demon king", and i am like ahh, there was a whole scene talking about how she could kill the demon king but she doesn't want to because she couldn't invision a world at peace and thus she wouldn't want to kill him, and Frieren is a mage of a peaceful era and can imagen killing the demon king. Don't get me wrong, I love watching your guys' reactions; it's just hard for me to watch, because I really like the anime for the way they tell the story. It's very different from 95% of anime currently out there.

Carter really nailed on understanding Serie’s character and seeing thru her demeanor. Serie is fond of all her students, it may not look like it, but it really shows. An example is how Serie shielded Sense from responsibility by blaming Frieren. She also was praising Lernen for how powerful of a mage he has become. She’s just disappointed that Lernen will die soon even though he's at his peak and could get even better. It’s just the lifespan of a human is what saddens Serie. Serie claims to not like humans or Frierens/Flamme favorite spell, yet she conducts the third test in a garden of flowers. Even though Serie said that suppressing mana is an inefficient spell, she most likely was the one who taught mana suppression to Flamme. And if not, she picked up Mana suppression after Flamme died. It’s funny to me that Serie said she was done training humans and then 10 mins later she ask Fern to be her student😭 The only person I think Serie is truly disappointed in is Frieren and that’s because Frieren never did a single thing within 1000 years outside the forest she originally resided in. Frieren had no ambition. She only became active when Himmel sought her out, and then only collected spells for 80-90 years. That's why Frieren knows Serie is not the mage she wants her to be, because Frieren is supposed to be stronger than she currently is. Imagine if you went to an alternate dimension where you met a young Lebron James. You know he could be just as amazing as the Lebron James in our world, but instead of playing basketball, he just wants to garden😭😭😭 I can understand where Serie's frustration comes from😭

One treasuring the fleeting connections with humans and the other finding that fleeting connection pointless. I feel like every time Serie makes a statement she contradicts herself with either her words or her actions. I feel like the most obvious examples is her talking down on frieren and flamme for their favorite spell but they’re taking the final part of the exam in a room full of flowers. She says flammes dream for humans is pointless but now she runs the organization. She says she should have never taken in human students , but then immediately ask to take fern in. She remembers every student she takes in, it must be incredibly lonely knowing you’ll live to see the students u raise die

2025-12-06 21:20:34 +0000 UTCSeire gets a bad rap and she is abrasive and acts as kind of an antagonist but she's not malicious. Much like demons, narratively she acts as a foil to Frieren: she's one of the ways Frieren could have ended up if she never met Himmel and the gang. I always think of Seire as a super nerd for magic. It's all she cares about and all she wants to talk about. She wants to find people to pull up to her level and just commiserate about magic with them all day. It's why she is so adversarial with Frieren: she knows Frieren could be that person but Frieren doesn't want to be. She is a really sad character when you think about it, if you watch right at the end she turns away right before she tells Fern that she passes and her face changes from a smile to one of disappointment. She finally found someone she felt she could share her magic with and Fern rejected her.

2025-12-06 21:19:51 +0000 UTCI feel like serie's gripe with frieren lies in the fact that all frieren's done is defeat the demon king in her eyes. when we last saw them together, she told frieren to honne herself and her craft. I think she saw the potential in frieren and didn't want her to waste it. Frieren wasted centuries of her years after flammes death, defeated the demon king in a mere 10 year blip, and went back to small time adventuring. With all the time serie has been alive, like other passionate mages, she's devoted her time to aquiring knowledge, spells, and power. I think she resents that frieren isn't using her one advantage over humans, her time, as she would've imagined.

When Fern was asked by Richter if she was Frierens student she didnt answer, showing her trust in her as a teacher had faded. Stark had for answer to her. They had been fighting a lot between the tests so maybe she was questioning her sincerety But when she talked to Serie she proudly declared frieren her master, not serie, showing her trust in frieren had been restored by her repairing the staff. Its the little things that matter most Also Denken was looking through books while talking to Richter. Its just an idea but maybe he was looking for books for richter to read to grow as a mage and maybe even as a person

Sidenote: on the topic of magical development, Serie mentioned human beings progress quickly, due to having a limited lifespans. That sense of urgency can create a desire to achieve things quickly. Contrarily, elves and other humanoids have more time to stop and smell the roses. So the progression may be slower, but more refined (e.g. Frieren's mana control). Either way, I love how the show leaves virtually no plot holes, and every piece of dialogue and character interaction feels purposeful 😎

Serie is saying that Flamme's magic were useless but keeping the garden full with flowers made with magic, especially ones that represents Flamme.

2025-12-06 21:11:14 +0000 UTCTo me, it always felt like Serie respects power and the reason she doesn't like Frieren is, instead of devoting all her time to be powerful, Frieren conceals her mana 24x7 and her favorite spell is a non combat spell. Which also explains why she passes Fern, because Fern is a powerful prodigy whose potential is so high.
