Interesting discussion at the start of the episode regarding the lack of world-building in this show. I think it ultimately depends on what the author focuses on - character building or world building. In fictional works, these two are typically on the opposite sides of the spectrum. LOTR, Harry Potter, GoT spend a lot of time building the world. It's been a few years since I read LoTR, but I can vividly visualize some of the locations in Middle Earth (even the ones not in the movies), but I cannot remember a single description of the characters. Foundation, Mistborn, Dune are quite plot heavy and focus more on the characters themselves. I feel the character-focused approach fits this world and story really well. Would I love to have a map of the world to visualize the journey of our characters? Definitely. But I doubt the manga writers and the animators would have the bandwidth or skills to do both. So I typically give them the benefit of the doubt.

I agree about the map thing, but some stories are told without knowing the whole shape of the world. The more details given like that the harder it can be to add new elements down the road or throw out ideas that no longer fit with the way the story is developing. Not true of all stories or story telling styles, but I think of D&D when talking about this, where both methods are valid and i know great DMs who do both (know the whole world from the start or build it as they go).

I agree with Mckay at the start, that they should show where main characters are in their journey, but at the same time I feel like it was done deliberately. Not having a map showing where they are going every ep makes me feel like Im lost in the time they spend on this journey too. The characters themselves dont actually know how long this journey will be, the estimated time is 10 years like the hero party but side quests can prolong it. Given that this series is about passage of time and learning about humans, I think this fits perfectly. Im not particularly curious about the location they are headed. But who and what they encounter on the way. People make places, after all, and wherever they go they get to know a little bit about the place itself, enough to know what and how those places make people. Thats enough to me for an iyashikei series like this.

it's appealing to me because it's based on the themes of mortality, memory and the passage of time imo the characters have clear individuality - not everyone might connect with them but that’s fine. the locations aren’t really the focus; they’re more like a backdrop for frieren’s reflection on her past journey and relationships with the hero party, contrasted with her current bond with fern and stark the stakes don't feel real because the journey you want to watch is over, the demon king has been defeated this story is about what comes after that ending i personally like it because it makes me think about what it means to live, to lose, and to remember and also because i've never seen smth like this before, set in like a fantasy world a silent voice or violet evergarden are the closest things that come to mind when i try to consider smth similar hope that helps :)

I’m trying so hard not to sound harsh but can someone please explain the appeal pf this show bc I feel like I’m genuinely wasting my time when I watch this. like the premise is kinda cool but the characters are kind of flat, the locations have no substance to them and are p forgettable, the world building seems generic, the stakes dont feel real since frieren a beast, like do people just like mid? like how is this in the top spot on my anime list. like I will gladly eat my words if it gets better than this but I feel like the rest of the show just gonna keep this same energy.

i agree with mckay, and i think it might be one of the reasons why this show isn’t my favorite. i completely understand why people love the journey and how it zeros in on the characters own journeys, but i think i’ve learned that i like a show with a little more emphasis on location and the importance of the locations in the story. i appreciate the takes guys as always!

I personally think for an anime like frieren showing maps and locations every time we go somewhere would take away from the magic of Frieren. I like what they do right now personally. They subtly build up the world and not just give it all to us on a silver platter. It would also shift away the focus of the show to worldbuilding when its a fundamentally more of a introspective show.

So human magic system only incorporated a copied version of the demons flying magic about 40 years ago. Remember how Frieren blasted Qual the huge sealed demon in episode 3 while she was flying with his own spell? Before he looked up he was looking at her left and right on eye level as he was sealed away for 80 years and in their last encounter she couldn’t fly. That’s partially the reason why he got got like that. He even remarked right before getting blasted "oh you can fly now.." So cool how consistent the show is with details like this.

Comparing One Piece’s mapping and world building is such a weird way to looking at Frieren’s approach to it. There are literally multiple One Piece arcs that are the length of the entirety of Frieren’s entire manga right now presently. The entire point of OP is to visit all of these locations. therefore the islands and mapping matters and relies on you knowing these islands intimately. As opposed to Frieren, their goal is to get to a singular place, but they’re making pitstops along the way because it’s meant to be a 10 year journey. I’m not sure why we’re trying to compare the two series as if they had the same structure and objective.

I totally agree with your point in the beginning about locations feeling unimportant. Each location basically has zero identity. Okay zero might be an exaggeration but the point stands, everywhere feels like a generic medieval town or village and there is really nothing to hold onto for the viewer. But the simple truth seems to be what you guys already stated, the world building elements are secondary when it comes to Frieren, the center stage is the characters, their growth and their feelings which the show does exceptionally well, but it would be fun to have both good world-building and the great character storytelling.

I’d assume the reason Frieren didn’t wear it prior to realizing what the ring meant was because she didn’t know about the significance of it and the concept of marriage and the whole wearing it for life thing probably still eludes her even after Fern explained the rings meaning so she just keeps it close to her like any other significant object an important person would gift to you. You don’t have to wear the ring to cherish it, that’s only a concept to us humans.

The way Frieren's ring has just the bud meaning the relationship with Himmel could not blossom but Fern's is flowering meaning Stark has a chance. I feel so bad for Himmel, he knew time was the biggest factor and so he did not try to force it. He only did his thing here and there to show some of his affection and now Frieren, seeing Fern and Stark, is looking back at it and hopefully realizing there was something more.

From the intro it seems like you guys value world building in the shows you watch. Make sense why you like GOT and AOT, HXH og One Piece. They are all shows that have masted the world building part of the story. I would recommend watching Mushoku Tensei. The story can get a little weird sometimes but the story and character development is some of the best in all of anime, and the animation is also top notch. The world building is also on another level. Its a show where you are not ment to like the main character from the start, but you watch him grow and become a better person and learn how to live a better life. It is very peak

Jack was cooking in the intro. In GOT you have already visited Winterfell, kings landing, the wall, the Dothraki area and other places so many times in just season 1. This show is about adventure to new places and GOT is about the people living in different places around the world. Of course you are going to remember places better in GOT when you visit that place almost every single episode. In frieren you visit one place, and then go to the next place and so on until you reach the end of your journey. In game of thrones you visit all the places in the first few episodes and go back and forth for the next 8 seasons. I have not read the manga for frieren but if we start going back to all the places we have already been to later in the story, it will still not feel the same as in GOT because the places simply are not that important to the overall story and the people in those places are not people we really care about.

The thing with Frieren and Himmel's relationship is that Himmel was likely the first person she met who she spent that much time around who also happened to be romantically interested in her. And they met when she was over 1000 years old. Before then, she was keeping a low profile, collecting spells, and just flitting from one place to another. Couple that with how elves have naturally weaker romantic feelings and Frieren, even when Himmel got down on a knee and put that ring on her finger, likely had no idea what the implication was. And why would she - it was very likely the first time she'd ever experienced anything remotely like it and probably only initially chalked it up as Himmel being his usual dramatic self. The tragedy of their relationship and what makes this journey she's now on so great is that she's beginning to understand those interactions through a different light, especially as she watches the romance between Fern and Stark bloom. She likely had feelings for Himmel, she just never understood them, let alone how to express them.

Knowing the locations of a show depends on what the author/mangaka is trying to achieve i think. One Piece world building works because Oda wanted us to have that sense of adventure hence why he makes a note of making sure we remember each island/place the straw hats go to without making it so convoluted. Frieren is much simpler in that sense because (like Jack and Carter said) the focus is on the relationships Frieren has/had with the people around her because of the constant reminder that she has a long life. Although, that’s not to say they shouldn’t highlight the places they go to but it’s not necessary. You’re not supposed to really care about the locations only the people tbh. It’s a valid criticism though it’s just about what the anime is trying to achieve without over complicating itself :) (sorry for the yap 😭)

Personally, I like how Frieren's world-building isn't super focused on specific locations, but on the world as a whole. After all, a world is so much more than just its locations; Frieren's magic system (in particular), inhabitants/species, religion, and history are all so interesting and well-written. That isn't to say your guys' criticism(?) isn't valid though, I actually agree that Frieren doesn't do a great job with visually mapping out the route Frieren and co take for the viewer. (However, if you guys aren't remembering landmark locations like Aureole, Ende, and Äußerst, then at that point I'd call it a skill issue.) Was gonna comment about the intro last episode but forgot. You guys don't like the animation, I thought that while maybe they weren't the most groundbreaking in terms of direction or pure "wow" factor, the visuals themselves are still disgustingly good. The art is beautiful, and that amazing cut with Frieren in between past and present is so good. Plus Frieren's animation as a whole is groundbreaking in terms of its fluidity and precise attention to character movements (Jack called out how fluid the animation of Stark putting on his coat was in a previous episode, which was actually a scene that was widely praised for its animation), and that Stoltz scene in the OP is a prime example. My main problem is actually the song, I don't think YOASOBI was the right fit for Frieren. The lyrics are cool and I enjoy the song as a standalone work, but the overall vibe of the song is out of place imo.

UGHHH MY HEART ACHES FOR FRIEREN AND HIMMEL😔 You probably missed it but the tower clock shows that the only thing standing between them is time. The lotus on Fern’s bracelet was fully bloom which represents that love will eventually fully blossom. On Frieren’s ring it’s a simple bud that hasn’t bloomed yet. It represents Himmel’s love never getting to fully prosper, due to time, but the love will forever be eternal It’s so sad. Himmel loved her but accepted that he wouldn’t be able to do anything due to the difference of lifespan and Frieren lack of emotion in general. Now after years of his passing, Frieren is starting to feel said emotions and realize her own love for him as she’s on her new journey. Pain. Just pain💔

there are a couple call backs in this one. The big one is the ring and the bells. If you look back at the first episode at Himmel's funeral right as they switch from the church to the cemetery bells ring and there is a shot of Frieren gasping as if realizing something. Then after they are done a the cemetery the next shot is Frieren looking at the ring Himmel gave her here with the bells ringing in the background. The other cool callback is Frieren mentioning humans have only been able to fly for 40 years or so. If you remember back to their fight with Quall while he is fighting Fern is is looking around for Frieren and is surprised that she can fly. Since he was sealed for 80 years he would not have know Frieren could do that. So not only was she prepared because she knew Zoltrak had been figured out she also had the fact that Quall didn't know she could fly in her back pocket.

About the "debate" about locations and whatnot in this show, I think the point is that they don't spend a lot of time talking about these places because they are trying to show how fleeting it is to Frieren. It's more about the character moments because that's what Frieren remembers, to Frieren these places literally are just a blur, and even when she revisits them it could be hundreds of years later. Many of the places don't really "mean" anything to Frieren, only the people she might interact with there Anyways, banger reaction as always, I personally CANNOT wait for the reaction to next episode for one or two very specific reasons

McKay has a good point, knowing where you are does add to the story. However, from Frieren’s perspective, many of these places haven’t been around long enough to BE memorable. The only places that seem significant are the places she traveled with Himmel, and even those aren’t emphasized like they could be.

agree with everything in the beginning discussion honestly, no notes. even Berserk the 🐐 struggles to ground itself to its locations for me. I guess it's not high priority in manga/anime, but when they manage to pull it off, it's a big plus. I'm thinking it has to do with it being purely visual and having to draw every scene in tiny boxes and they can only show what they need to show before their hand cramps. GoT and LOTR have books as sources and you can world build so much more with ease through just words.

The clocktower in between Frieren and Himmel when he put the ring on her finger is a crazy metaphor, “time” keeping them apart Frieren’s new journey is basically 2 journeys at the same time - setting off to find Heaven, and also realizing/understanding the feelings of Himmel and her former companions. She didn’t really know or understand them the first time around, but she’s learned a lot about human interactions since then, so now it’s like she’s seeing everything differently this time around while also remembering things in a new light
