There is a theory that it was Vecna who was communicating with Joyce in season 1 and not Will. He pretended to be Will to toy with her. We even see a Demogorgon come out of the wall and then when she comes back the wall looks normal. It's like he made her see visions similar to those kids he tortured.

This is just me liking to be a devils advocate but I just realized Yuri is kind of a hero in the right light. Imagine if the country POV was switched. An American smuggler in the cold war era discovers Russians trying to sneak into america to break out a Russian prisoner. And the smuggler interferes and brings them in. That's an American hero. Food for thought. (obviously Yuri isn't doing it altruistically) Just an interesting thing about POVs.

Not my fav episode of the season but it does get better from here. Hoppers dialogue was pretty depressing. The next couple combined with this one help the flow a lot better imo. I think this show was just meant to be binged. Doing it one episode at a time kills the vibe a bit.
