Fast forward to now and I’m 370 chapters in and only 27% done but loving every minute of it. Now I’m seeing how much they glossed over in the first 3 eps it covers almost 80 chapters! I still love it though but hope they slow the pace down soon for those who haven’t read to understand better it is an amazing story and world. For those who have read the whole thing please give me strength this is going to take me awhile to finish reading but I’m ready.

2025-07-05 00:47:29 +0000 UTCWelcome to the wonderful world of Donghua (chinese anime). Ive been sick to death of japanese anime since ive been watching it for about 20 years now. These past few years ive been getting WAY into Donghua. It's superior to anime in just about every way, aside from the translation which with "cultivator" concepts and chinese mythos is kind of impossible to fix lol just accept theres some stuff you wont understand completely. Totally different flavor to it than anime. China rocks at cgi/ most donghua are very high end polished cgi. honestly its funny as far as Donghua goes this is actually super tame (complexity of story, plot, power system and crazy shit happening) Most Donghua are 100s of eps long so you really just get lost in it. My recommenders for best donghua are Soul Land, Renegade Immortal, and Demon Hunter. The last 2 are still airing. Renegade Immortal is my number 1 atm its unbelievably good so far. Soul Land is an old classic and has about idk 8 seasons to it or something but really only watch the first 2 which is about 250 eps. but boy do they fly by you can binge the whole thing. Alot of these you can actually source right of youtube for free and alot of eps are full HD too. Theres also Chinese animated movies which are made by the same studio and are all interconnected like marvel films, and they are FANTASTIC. Ne Zha 1, Jiang Ziya (personal fave), Green Snake, White Snake, Ne Zha Reborn, New Gods: Yang Jian, and Ne Zha 2 which as of now isn't outside China yet. It looks like Hollywood is starting to catch onto how good these films are too because The most recent Ne Zha had a full premiere in US theaters!

I heard first 3 episodes is fast due to contract constraints (3 episode rule stuff). Episode 4 and onwards should be normal pacing which should help you relax ur eyes and process the information better. ------------------ Also crunchyroll subs are not fully translating the details on screen, which is why you guys are misunderstanding the names (seer, sleepless, corpse collector, midnight poet, nightmare etc..) These are names of sequences. It's supposed to be: Corpse Collector Pathway: Sequence 9: Corpse Collector Seer Pathway: Sequence 9: Seer Sleepless Pathway: Sequence 9: Sleepless Sequence 8: Midnight Poet Sequence 7: Nightmare Pathway names are "usually" named after the sequence 9's name of that specific pathway. I don’t like how the characters are drawn, they look extremely typical, cliche, and there’s no unique look to any of the characters. They look like cheap characters you get with anime filters on some app. And very typical. The background and everything is nice, but I don’t really like how things feel 3D sometimes. Idk. And yeah, from what I remember, LotM started out with a bang, lots of information thrown at you but this feels worse? Like the anime is trying way too hard to look cool or like a fantasy world. The novels start felt a bit more organic and slow with the same amount of information. I’m not sure, maybe it’s been a while since I read it. But I’m not really feeling it. The story is fine, but the art AND animation is not really pulling me in like you guys are saying.

There’s lots of heavy world building at the beginning of the novel so that’s why so much is happening at once, but it pays off really well!!

The creator of LOTM himself mentioned that the most difficult episodes to adapt were these first two, because of the requirements for the donghua adaptation. They could not add everything because the first few chapters were slow paced and they wanted to rush for the start and organize it more throughout. It makes sense because it’s not easy to adapt eight novels of story into a show. He also said the episodes progressively get better throughout the season, and that these two episodes were nothing compared to the rest.

Episode 1 was 16 chapters and episode 2 was 30 chapters. The studio said they had to condense the first 3 episodes a lot because of restrictions but were able to ease up the pace starting with episode 4. Also Crunchyroll is so bad with the translations. They either mistranslated a bunch of stuff or just didn't bother translating important information.

The novel is so unbelievably peak fiction and popular that’s it’s logged in the national library of China. The studio (B.C May Pictures) is relatively young but they’ve already produced a few significant shows in the Chinese animation or Donghua space. Them along with Studio LAN and Haoliners Animation league are probably currently the three leading Chinese animation studios. They’ve already integrated into the Japanese animation space the last several years. Studio LAN’s Link Click really set off even more intereste in Chinese Animation and with To be Hero X that’s airing currently and even with Nezha 2 this year in the animated cinema space with its success, I can see the potential of Chinese animation beginning to find its way into mainstream. Also funny that you guys mention about it seemingly being a great game. They ARE actually making an RPG based on the world. It was announced in 2023. Looking forward to watching something new with you guys!

So of course I was very excited for the anime, and I can definitely say that they delivered a 5 course meal. It seems the pacing was off and they skipped a lotta stuff but I loved the feeling of learning stuff along with MC. Not to even mention the gorgeous art style, animation and sound. My only complaint is shared with the manhua I've read, and carter also had the same complaint: The characters mention stuff as if we know it already, the storytelling acts as if we know it already, everything is as if we're supposed to know what it is, but in actuality we've never been told what it is. I've only had this issue with chinese stuff so I'd guess its cultural stuff most people know, or derivatives of common concepts, but it could also be due to lines being cut out for pacing. It's not the worst thing but I have dropped some manhua because they just had too much of this, I'm hoping I'll see less of it in this series going forward.

I'll give it a try. Edit: Alright, I finished the two episodes. The animation is really good. It looks stunning. It's hard to explain, but I felt like the sound effect department was lacking. Not the music though. I did not like how we're just thrown in the story. It really felt like you had to have read the donghua to know the premise. Or maybe it was just the mega lore dump right in the first episode. The second episode was much better in that regard.

How about the others? I love it. Anime has such an exposition problem where they narrate absolutely everything and here even the inner thoughts are mysteries to be unraveled. He just thinks what he thinks instead of explaining everything and we have to infer what he knows

So far I feel these 2 episodes were a bit rushed for newcomers and the music in the background was a bit too much for me but that’s my only complaint! Everything else looks amazing! I hope they do this story justice! Glad you guys are enjoying it!
