And when we learned that his true dream/desire was to become a hero all the details that not only parallels Eren but the main theme in AoT as well.

2025-05-02 18:49:27 +0000 UTCMan 4x3 might be my favorite ep, just delving into the character of Reiner (who was already fascinating) showing how he became the tortured man he is in the present. When the Armored Titan first appeared to ram the gate he seemed a terrifying and focused being of pure destruction, to know that the person inside was just a kid wondering why he was still alive... man. The skyward cut from Bert and Reiner to Eren and Armin, "To Save Humanity," Reiner seeing Eren as himself and his suicide attempt being averted at the last minute by Falco, just a lot of good stuff. Also it's not really important because we know the characters' motivations, but I think Reiner was more right about what would happen to all of them if they returned to Marley. Even if both Bert and Annie pointed the finger at Reiner I don't think the brass would be too impressed that they all immediately abandoned the mission at the first setback. Which makes it even crazier that they were sent without a supervising officer of some kind. I can buy that they gave the Titans to kids (brainwashed child soldiers easier to control than adults I guess is the implication) but with no oversight or contact at all is a little harder to swallow.

Riley’s bewildered “What” and then her totally flabbergasted face are literally my favorite part of this video! And boys did a great job to keep all cards close to their chest 👏👏👏

I was shocked when I realized just like Riley was. The ending was epic! I had to resist the urge to watch more since my lunch ended and I had to get back to work. After I finish the last Mob Pyscho, I'm definitely watching the next AoT episode!

And the other geks always glancing over like YEP didn’t catch that the first time did you?? I was SHOCKED the girls didn’t think it was Eren but it made for a peak reaction lol. Reiner’s whole backstory telling and the way it transitions all the way to “to save humanity” always gives me CHILLS. The double meaning is insane and it would make such an interesting watch to immediately go back to season 1 with that perspective. Also it’s crazy seeing the vulnerable Reiner with Eren, you can completely tell he reverted back to his original insecurities.

Also I'm surprised nobody caught on to the name 'Krueger' which was The Owl, Eren Krueger's last name. Declaration Of War, what a damn episode, just start to finish the tensions are so damn high and the climax is absolutely perfect, definitely in the top 5 eps of the show in my opinion. I remember when I watched this ep while the show was airing and I went straight to Twitter and Reddit to see everyone's reactions and seen people on Twitter panicking over "Declaration Of War" trending thinking it was irl only to realize it was a bunch of anime fans gushing over an anime episode lmao, getting to watch this whole season at the same time as the rest of the world was a blessing of an experience.

This card depicts an old method of punishment used for traitors in Italy and symbolises treason as well as martyrdom and sacrifice. There's a parallel between the cards meaning and his betrayal of humanity inside the walls as well as the sacrifices he had to make as a warrior. This is also a reference to the man who hung himself that Bert keeps dreaming about. Bert also used this mans story way back in season 1 episode 3 when Eren was asking him and Reiner about where they came from and what they were doing when the wall came down. Another name for this card is also 'the traitor'.

He started by retelling the false history that the majority of the world believes, and then revealed the true story to everyone. In doing this, he humanized King Fritz (another Eldian) to a degree that the crowd had never seen before. Right after humanizing the Eldians within the walls by expressing that King Fritz just wanted them to live in a brief peace, he warns the crowd of a usurper who poses a risk to everyone. He then uses the crowd's fear and existing prejudice to his advantage to refer to all the Eldians on the island as devils and declare war on the island. He does this right after somewhat humanizing them lol.

Sure, if they ate Ymir, there'd be one less titan as one of them would have the Jaw's power, but it could always be passed on later to someone else. Maybe there would be better options than eating her, but I can't think of any that would be feasible, especially for children; still, It's a much bigger risk just leaving the power there.

He is clearly somewhat disgusted with Willy and the Tyburs, who are complicit in the oppression against the Eldians. However, his snide remarks are just that because he is still a military commander, ultimately at the mercy of the Tyburs. The Tyburs are also such an interesting bunch because I don't think they actively participated in the discrimination and oppression of their own people. Still, they're 100% passive, and because they are technically "in-charge," their allowing it to happen is disgusting - but their hands-off approach is what makes them well-respected in the world in the first place. I think it's an allegory for real-life ultra-rich and influential families that transcend nationality or race, yet paradoxically remain "powerless" in the sense that they benefit from everything, including war, so they aren't compelled to change anything.

And I’m curious to hear the girls opinions and how the boys feel this second time around. Personally, up to this point I’m feeling pretty much exactly how I felt my very first time watching. Obviously with more hindsight and what not, and I appreciate some things and characters more. But I definitely still hold the same opinions regarding this whole war ordeal. Re: Why didn't Zeke and Pieck join the Paradis operation? Because that would be putting all your eggs in a single basket right in the middle of enemy territory, I don't think there were any other wars that Marley was engaged in during that time, but it is still a global superpower. Plus, Marley knows Zeke is special and is the one titan they cannot afford to lose. They have Zeke and Pieck on reserve just in case.

2025-04-29 01:03:55 +0000 UTCFor Brig's qusetion in regards to Zeke not coming with them, it's explained in a manga panel (somewhere in the mid 90s in terms of chapters iirc) that they left some behind so Marley doesn't literally send all their Titan shifters on an indefinite mission. Kinda makes sense tbh and I think you can surmise that as well, it would be silly to send them all away and leave your military on the continent with nothing. The Willy/Magath conversations are also very interesting and need to be understood. *Especially* the discussion that's coming up soon in the next episode, it's pivotal. Also, Eren's "I'm the same as you" full meaning won't be understood till later for the girls. But the reason it's absolutely brilliant is because even on a first watch, you have "half" of that line's meaning unlocked, i.e., they are the same because they're attacking each other's home for their "unavoidable" mission. But curiously, once Reiner breaks down and admits to his selfishness and own fault after Eren's prodding, Eren says "Like I thought... I'm the same as you". Food for thought, although that piece of the puzzle will be complete later. Also also, that parallel with the old man who hanged himself and Reiner is awesome. "He wanted to be judged" because he left 3 kids behind, like Reiner left 3 kids behind himself (he got Marcel killed, Bertholdt was eaten and Annie is still on Paradis). He alone returned, and the weight of *everything* that has happened is too much. He can't trust himself to judge himself, nor does he think he is deserving of that introspection/healing. And the only way for his defense mechanisms, alter egos, masks, depression etc to finally go away so he can begin healing is for those who believe he has wronged to judge him first with no excuses. And that is what we saw Reiner want here, and there might just be more of it later down the line

When I watched it I clocked that it was Eren because of his voice. So distinctive. About Tybers, Basically King Fritz left them to watch over people. They had all the information for a century, seeing the truth behind Eldians, behind King's false promise to destroy the world and they did nothing to stop Eldian hate. While their family was praised for saving the world. Through memories Tyber family knows the truth, that this founding power can't be used for bad by Royal family and can't be accessed by non-royals to cause harm. But then these two 16 year olds Reiner and Berthold come saying that random dude from island used the Founding titan power. For Reiner it was normal, like yeah he is the founding titan. But Tyber knows, some random can't do that. Who is this Eren guy, that can use power and is not affected by the king. So in Willy Tyber's eyes Eren is indeed the greatest threat, the biggest unknown. Plus he hates the warriors and can destroy the world. Willy thinks he is doing the world a favor. I loved how Eren was patient listening to Willy and only decided to act when the war was declared, like Okay I am making the First move. Reiner's suicidal actions break my heart every time. Imagine how messed up you should be to sacrifice not only your life, but to know that your nation will probably lose this Armored titan power. He was ready to let it all go.

The big examples are Reiner and Bert being so adult like yet being kids in titan forms, but another example is Erens titan having long hair just like Eren eventually has. I think titan forms take shape of a characters final form through p**hs, "it" would know how to design you as your future self. Thats my headcanon at the very least.

I was in middle school then and am well into my 20s now. Watching the story unfold throughout all this time was a profound experience, and every rewatch just solidifies my belief that this is the greatest anime ever made. Reiner is literally the same as Eren. Falco being betrayed by Eren is like when Eren was betrayed by Reiner and Bertholdt. Willy is willing to fight the enemy at all cost instead of waiting for their death and so is Eren (Willy even says Eren's line "because I was born into this world") .
