the sentiment i get from a lot of onepiece fans on skypia is that the manga readers love it and the anime watchers tend to not like it as much cuz the pacing really is so bad. i watched the anime first as a kid and loved it , then again like 7y ago and was kinda disapointed but now after watching one pace here i must say top tier arc for sure

I feel like everyone has a 'moment' in One Piece. A moment where idek how to describe it, but it's like you get finally get it. You finally come to your own understanding of how strongly this show can make you feel and immerse you, how attached you are to the characters, what the appeal of this show is to you and how much it means to you. I'm sure it's different for everyone. For quite a few people, including me, I felt like I had quite a few of these moments watching all of one Piece, where each time after the last, I would be even more overwhelmed with an appreciation for how much this show means to me, where for the later moments, I couldn't even put into words how great this show is. I'm writing this because I feel like this is that moment for the Geks. Even though they've already enjoyed so many different moments, had so many ups and downs with the show already, it felt like this was one of those moments where it really resonated with them. Where even if they stopped watching tomorrow, they would each now have this 'more than words' understanding of what is special about this show. Maybe I'm wrong, or for some of them it hasn't happened yet, but this reaction was a really special watch. To the Geks I just want to say, genuinely it only gets better from here. The next arc (or arcs because people tend to divide them into two) was MY moment for me from one of the earliest episodes of it. Like a train, I was suddenly hit by this massive realisation that One Piece was my favourite show of all time, and I was so deeply invested in these characters in ways I wasn't even aware of. I am SO excited for you guys to watch it, especially cause yeah I feel like these episodes really cemented 'what' is so special about One Piece for you guys.

Also rewatching this after being caught up to the manga has been insane, the small details... this man ODA had such a grand large-scale story planned all the way back in 2002 oh my god😭😭 im so glad the charm of One Piece is starting to show!!!

Something I find touching is that the girl who clears Noland's name to Kalgara and the tribe before they depart is the same one that would have died if not for Noland's intervention at the beginning of the story. Noland's saves her life not knowing that it would come back around in a huge way.

W7 has good pacing in some episodes, and it makes those stand out, but that affects the other episodes in the arc even worse, IMO. It's extremely uneven. I think there's a risk that the pacing will drag down the impression of this arc too, honestly.

It's funny how one piece backstories can just suck you in. I remember the first time I was watching one piece and got to this part, I was annoyed when the backstory started. I thought Noland seemed goofy at first and didn't really care too much about the Shandians. Man did my view completely flip by the end of the backstory. I think anyone who wanted to skip this arc is just a hater, but I think One Pace has really helped the pacing of this arc. Parts of the beginning and much of the middle can really drag - especially the Satori fight. Since you guys complained about the pacing for Alabasta, I'm sure a lot of people were worried that you guys would not perceive Skypiea very well (like I was). I bet some of the hate this arc got was due to this reason, so the comments were just trying to keep your expectations low. Just my two cents at least

Faith is a huge thing in this arc, both in the flashback and the present. Faith in a religious sense with Skypieans and their ‘god’, as well as shandia’s gods; faith in your friends/family in the form of Shandians believing in their ancestors’ legacy mission & traditions(good& bad) and Kalgara doubting Noland. Also just having faith in humanity in general with the shandians needing to believe in a stranger that is luffy and realise he is trying to accomplish what they have wanted for 400 years. Oda is really good with incorporating themes and he continues to do it in every arc. So definitely keep an eye out for that if that tickles your fancy.

It was around 2003 when I was reading fan translations of the Japanese releases. The monthly shonen jump was pretty far behind. I was reading through that until I found out about chapter scanlations (via dial up). Edit with the timeline. The Skypiea Arc in the One Piece manga was released between 2002 and 2003, encompassing chapters 237-302 and volumes 26-32.

So happy you guys loved this backstory as much as you did! I'll be honest, Skypeia always seemed to rank in the middle to me in terms of how loved it was by fans. I was surprised/confused when you guys entered the arc with the impression that people really disliked it or felt it was in the lower tier. The earlier arcs are generally all considered classics, aside from TB lol. in my opinion, this is some of the most beautiful writing in op, how these two friends had so much admiration for each other because of how different their ways of living are, their relationship being so strong that when the promise of their reunion fell through we can see how it haunts generations after them, even 400 years later!!! i can't believe how theres people that hate this arc, i know the pacing is harsh but the set ups and pay offs are soooo good, and I agree with you carter, this back story portrays how theres both beauty and horror in traditions, and the same thing could be said about progress. the dialogue of kalgara during the farewell is one of my favorites in the whole show. i literally can't wait for ya'll to see the finale, loved the reaction/discussion so much, thanks for the double drop!♡

McKay is easily the most mysterious Gek. Jack used to be, but after many videos, I slowly pieced together that he is a former secret agent who one day sat on that couch to watch anime and simply never left. McKay, however, is still an enigma. But Cannon let slip that he’s a madman on a jet ski. Not sure what that means yet, but it’s something.
