Thank you for giving this show love! That quote of Shin that Neal highlighted, “the future is too long someone like me”, I remember how it made me bawl my eyes out when going through this show for the first time… it made me feel incredibly sad for Shin… and while he doesn’t get over his mental state completely at the end, it was so satisfying to see him find a new purpose.

The story in 86 was executed well since it was very straight forward plot but its very similar to Code Geass akito the exiled (with more flair) if you want to check that out. Aldnoah Zero, Darling in the Franxx, Record of Grancrest War, Mobile Suit Gundam: iron blooded orphans and Mobile Suit Gundam: the witch from mercury, Gundam 00, Gundam Seed/Destiny, Knights of Sidonia will have very similar or identical stories just different scales and direction.

2025-04-01 13:06:03 +0000 UTC86 is very grounded in its war story with colorful animation and poppy song selection but since the enemies lacked any strong personality it focused on the 86 soldiers and Melize's struggle which many shows dealing with humans fighting zombies or alien forces or robots, its nothing unique in this category, many show's story is exactly like 86 with more or less a stoic or charismatic main character. If they dont continue with a season 3 then its been a wonderful finale with the characters newfound hope and reunion. Both shows deal with classism, racism, politics, friendships, identity, etc Code Geass was trying to aim for many things in its scale, large cast of characters and their factions, unique character designs, no cgi mechs, DeathNote-vibes with Lelouch against the world, variety of trumpet, funk, orchestral variety, political strategy, school life, romance, supernatural powers, fan service, moral philosophy etc. The show had higher highs and lower lows with the shocking twists and seeing more of the tactical side in warfare, it just has a bit of everything. The story was very ambitious, having only 2 seasons meant not having enough time to explore more of the mysterious elements while moving the story so the pacing was wobbly but it landed the ending perfectly to many.

Code Geass has a better story, crazier twist, better characters as a whole with Cornelia, Schneizel, C.C, Kallen, Suzaku, Rolo, Lelouch etc. I only cared about Shin and Milize in 86, every other death scene in 86 felt sad by the amazing music that was played during those scenes, but not by the writing, because we barely knew the characters. Geass only has few more plot holes, but it tells a far more complex story, while 86 is much more contained. Which doesnt mean 86 is bad, its amazing, but not better than Geass.

All of them living had to happen in order for Shin to believe he could follow this new path of protecting their dreams. He always believed everyone would leave him and their survival and Lena's appearance fixed his mental struggle. I belive in the source material he puts it in autopilot and presumably leaves the machine seconds before.

2025-04-01 04:50:34 +0000 UTCBesides Raiden surviving, I like how this anime and this genre isnt afraid to kill off characters and bring out the truly horrible experiences in war and makes their convictions fully impact the viewer. The last few episodes have made this stand out from many. Most war-themed animes will have some sort of "reunion or reveal" between characters on opposites sides of the war if you explore more.
