It'd be so fun to see the girls' reactions to Ilse's Notebook lol. They were definitely aware of the OVAs, probably even before starting even season 2. I actually asked Bradlynn to mention it to Carter, which I imagine she did, considering she responded. The fact that we only got "we're unsure" as an explanation from Carter is odd to me. What is there to even be unsure about? Watch what you want, but when so many people (who are paying you to be able to do this) want you to react to something, I don't think it's unreasonable to AT LEAST know why you didn't/don't plan to.

Despite arguments here, I personally noticed it on my first time reading the manga 11 years ago, without anyone else saying anything, but I don't expect everyone else to. There is a scene where they tie him to interrogate and Sponge Bob slaps Mr Krabs and Squidward is like "Sponge Bob you gotta ask a question first" and Sponge bob says "what color is my underwear?", proceeds to slap him without waiting for his answer. Levi and Hange are Sponge Bob and Squidward to me.

Armin doesn’t have parents. He mentions his parents are gonna go outside the walls in a flashback. We see how far the military police will go to protect the secrets. Along with Erwin’s dad and historian’s mom, a couple is mentioned. To me that’s obvious. There’s no reason to think it’s just a random couple imo. If most people don’t make that connection that’s actually kinda shocking to me 😅 to me that falls under the definition you provide. It’s just obvious to me.

I certainly like the information reveal about armins parents myself but that doesn’t mean I won’t comment on the person making a wrong statement if they are wrong. Also if you read my comment you’d see that I referred to both the anime and manga, the only time armin mentions his parents in the show is in episode 5 when he says his parents are leaving the wall soon, he never mentions a hot air balloon like the top comment says he does, that is all I’m arguing here.

It is a purposeful detail that is added with the exact intention of being Armin’s parents and no one is wrong for saying that just because the manga doesn’t mention it. If anything, every single thing in the anime, every line and shot, is crafted with specific intention and purpose. Just chill and let people enjoy the ANIME reveals as much as they want. Jared/Jordan and triple take and while I can’t name them I feel I’ve seen your name elsewhere. Also the original GEK reaction. I don’t think you’d recognize me. I almost never comment. Partly because the videos I come across are older and because other times I just keep to myself. For example I’ve been apart of this community for almost a year and was watching the YouTube videos for a couple months before, but I’m just a shy person. Anyways. On to the point. I LOVE mikasa. I love Ymir (freckles) I even love the very side character hitch. They are all unique and just people. I think media and anime in particular can struggle with this. Girls and women can just be people. And AOT does it so well. And I appreciate in a sea of fan service we got a story that didn’t need to degrade their female characters but they could still be strong, beautiful and impactful to the story. But for argument sake. When I mentioned mikasa and her Ackerman ability and her Asian ancestry. I found it really interesting because I always loved her but in the end these things didn’t seem to matter much. And when they DID matter it was to help/stop the mc. I just feel there was a bit of build up and character development to amount to just the “lover”. Example mikasa and Annie. Don’t get me wrong. Like I said I love and appreciate how the female characters aren’t sexualized but I do think they could have make more of an impact. Historia is a prime example. so much potential to be a back drop. I LOVE AOT. I grew up with it. I watched it when it first aired and I still cry when I watch it. I personally believe it’s a masterpiece. But That doesn’t mean perfect. Mikasa the female lead could have been more. That’s all. But I still love it. I’m kind of nitpicking here. But I stand by it.

Also armin mentions it once so I don’t think it’s obvious at all that it is his parents. If the scene maybe showed them zoomed in with similar hair to armins it might make it more obvious but the scene itself is a random soldier describing horrible acts he has committed. From an audience point of view this random guy giving the reveal about armins parents seems a strange choice.

Therefore the mention of a hot air balloon never occurs so connecting the dots that the couple is armins parents is unable to be done by what is explained to us from the story. It’s only now that we know from either isayama or the fandom that we know who the couple are The mikasa ova also references the hot air balloon which was technically released a few weeks before episode 2 of season 3 released so that’s the only instance of a hot air balloon being mentioned

Having it tie in two seasons later, it's not surprising that it would fly over people's heads. That's the beauty of the rewatch though is picking up on all the small details that was easily missed haha

Sannes says he killed a stupid couple who tried to fly with an air balloon. Iirc, that's all we get on the matter. When I first watched the show, I always assumed they were most likely eaten by titans, but him saying that reveals that they were killed before they could even make the trip instead.

I’ll forgive reactors for missing things if the show very rarely or doesn’t explicitly refer to something as important before a reveal like this happens. Also since it’s just a bloody surname it by itself doesn’t hold any real meaning. It’s only important when you learn later that ackermans all share a certain power. Maybe there is also the fact that I never cared about the Ackerman storyline itself so it doesn’t bother me as much when people don’t say “HOLY SHIT THEY GOT THE SAME SURNAME” On the flip side game of thrones fucked up its own writing and plot from season 5 onwards where basically nothing made sense to what came before it. Aot doesn’t have that problem

2025-03-29 03:21:59 +0000 UTCWhile I am not going to disagree with everything you said, it's good to keep in mind that the anime could be considered AoT 1.2 because Isayama worked pretty closely with both studios to "refine" his work so I wouldn't blame WIT entirely here. It's actually a joint decision to shorten this arc to get to the really good stuff. I am personally fine with the changes - it's just a bit hectic on a first watch and I do agree that Mikasa's character can use the development - at least for more relaxed viewers who aren't psycho-analysing her every move (she actually has a pretty neat and deep character arc but it does take more effort to unravel).

You guys were talking at the end about complexity but the manga section here is light years ahead. That's why I find people wilding when fans uphold WIT to high heavens because you know if MAPPA did this all hell would break loose. WIT also butchered a lot of Mikasa's early dialogue and scenes and had her say 'Eren' 100 too many times compared to the manga. MAPPA deserves its lashings for how they treat their animators but in AoT's case they stayed very faithful to the source and elevated scenes

I mean, sure, there's also a little hint to stuff that happens later, but the main "twist" is just the same thing as Connie's mom basically. Would have been better if they watched it between seasons 1 & 2. Ilse's Notebook foreshadows the reveal which is confirmed after Connie's mum, so it'd be underwhelming now.
