One reveal in the ova gettin ruined by season 2 episode 1 doesn’t mean the entire ova is ruined, however the remaining things in that ova will be ruined by the end of season 3 if they decide to watch then.

Levi was like, "hey man you can trust them or you can transform. Nobody knows what either decision will bring, so go ahead and just make a decision". I feel like that interaction is a direct result of this experience from Levi.

The first two Lost Girls episodes are similar to No Regrets in that they let us learn about the experiences of a character. The final Lost Girls episode is a fever dream, but I absolutely love it. I had so many theories when I first watched it. The other two OVAs are just short side-stories for extra material, but they're still fun imo. I just don't get why they wouldn't want to watch more material for one of their favorite shows of all time.

However, I personally don't think it works as a motivator and a catalyst for Levi to continue as a scout or his undying loyalty to Erwin. The dots don't connect quite as well in the OVA, and the viewer is left having to assume the answers. Or worse, because the story demands Levi follow this path, we just have to accept it. In a perfect world, it would've been great to combine the OVA and manga ending together, making this an 11/10 side story.

I really liked them though. It's interesting to see Levi when he first started as a scout and then in the current timeliness. I feel like he was a lot like Eren in temperament especially when he went postal on that abnormal titan. It was good to see this side of him and we get now why he seems hardened. He's used to losing people. It's not that he doesn't feel anything he just learns to hide it more. I don't think Hange has a crush on him. I think she admired his skills and I also think she enjoys some drama too. I watched the first two episodes of season three and excited to see the reactions! Are you guys back to doing two or is it now three?

Don’t get me wrong, the anime adaptation is amazing with great animation and a top tier OST, but when comparing the two the manga is leagues above (especially season 3 onwards). They started cutting and changing way too many things which ruined lots of the story telling, character dynamics, development and characterization. It’s still really enjoyable, but I always tell ppl who enjoyed the anime that if they want to experience AOT’s storytelling at its peak, read the manga as well! You won’t know how much better it is until you try it. The one thing I’ll give the anime is the changes they made to the ending (the “thank you for becoming…” line was diabolical I’m glad they completely scrapped that 😭)

I feel like it's written much better and actually makes the relationship between Erwin and Levi, and his reason for staying in the scouts more believable. In the manga, Erwin and Levi's final confrontation/conversation is completely different to the OVA. Erwin doesn't insult Levi by calling him 'pathetic' when he is mourning the deaths of Isabel and Farlan after the fight, he's actually a bit more empathetic. He also doesn't give the speech about 'choices' which is the same speech Levi gives to Eren in S1. In the manga, Levi begins to blame himself, his pride and his decision to trust in his comrades, that's when Erwin cuts him off and says "No! It was the fault of the titans!" and proceeds to explain that humanity knows nothing about them, why they exist, why they eat humans etc. and how ignorant humanity is, and if they continue to stay that way and hide within their walls, they'll keep getting eaten (like Isabel and Farlan). He talks about how the eyes of humanity have become clouded and that they choose to remain ignorant of the threat and asks Levi if his eyes have also been clouded, and whether or not he will be satisfied with killing him now and returning to his old life in the underground as a thug. He gives him a choice saying that "From here on out there is no deal..." essentially indicating that Levi is free to leave or stay with them. Erwin finishes off the conversation with "We won't give up on going outside the walls. Fight with the survey corps, Levi! Humanity needs your strength!" I think this version makes Levi's decision to stay in the scouts, along with his loyalty and trust of Erwin much more powerful and believable. Erwin gives him closure on the deaths of his friends, by telling him not to blame himself and that it's not his fault. He helps open his eyes to the bigger picture and the real threat/enemy which are the titans and the real reason why Isabel and Farlan died. This gives him a reason to continue fighting and working alongside the scouts, which is much stronger than the OVA version IMO. In the OVA Erwin gives his 'choices' speech about not letting doubt enter his mind as it can dull/affect his next decision, leading to death and then proceeds to walk away saying he expects Levi to continue following him. From Levi's POV how is that meant to convince him to risk his life to continue working in the scouts? For what reason is he fighting for?

He’s fighting for his fallen comrades, and choosing the path that he believes will leave him with the least possible regret.

By choosing to follow Erwin, he redeems his mistakes, he chooses to fight for freedom, which is what he and his friends yearned for. By becoming a scout and fighting for humanity, Levi has given meaning to his friends’ lives.

Every episode is shot in only one take, there are no cuts, which really adds to the atmosphere of the show. They focus a lot on the characters, especially his family. It was interesting to see the ripple effect of his actions go to the whole family, his mum and dad were broken. I liked it overall but I was expecting a twist, I felt dissatisfied with the ending, I was left wanting more

Only one OVA was adapted by a story Isayama wrote and that's "Ilse's Notebook" which in the manga was actually placed right after Trost and before the 57th expedition. Not trying to be a hater just thought that should be a fact that's front and center when thinking about the OVAs.
