one of the reason i love Naruto is we didnt see him as a strong character instantly. We see him train, we see his hard work. The more reason it's so special when he gets stronger. And yeah, i would have to agree that I actually didn't like OG that much as well, but I liked Shippuden since the beginning.. but as I've watched more episodes, and really go deep in the Naruto world, damn it's all worth it, it all make sense, it's a perfectly imperfect story and i honestly forgive all the bad episodes. It's just me.

I love certain elements of OG a lot - the final fight at the valley of the end has some of my absolute favourite animation and direction; I love the Sasuke retrieval arc and the Chunin exams for highlighting the side characters in meaningful ways that I think gets a bit reduced in Shippuden (I wish more side characters got their arcs continued or completed better in Shippuden with the ways they were set up in OG); I love that in the early days, regular villagers and smaller missions and towns could get a lot of in-depth development (Waves arc for example); and of course the dynamic with Naruto and Sasuke still interacting with each other every episode and the excitement of that rivalry and them pushing each other to be their best is really satisfying. Shippuden expands the world and story so much and is absolutely fantastic, but sometimes it’s nice to go back to the small stakes and familiar small world of OG and those tightly written, meaningful character moments. All that said, Shippuden still has the highest highs that’s for sure.

For real, I was 8 when I first watched Naruto around ~2005 on TV and it was the last show on at 8:30pm every night before my bed time. I would BEG my parents to stay up to watch each next episode. Then I reconnected with anime in my teens and was watching Shippuden and keeping up with reading the manga all the way through to 2015 when I was 18. I felt like I’d grown up with him :’) The last few manga chapters had me crying just from the fact that a decade of my life was finally over with the characters I’d spent most of my life at the time with. That’s the magic of growing up with a show in real-time! Obviously the experience of watching the same show in 2025 as an adult is going to be a completely different thing, and that’s totally normal! Anime has come a long way and is so different and better paced nowadays. It’s just great that people can still experience this story, regardless of timing or nostalgia. Am really just happy the Geks are here watching shows from the Big Three all these years later :)

@goatchis: Everyone I know watched it subbed. I’m personally happy they watched it subbed because I struggled to find reactioners who did, so I’ve never been able to watch a Naruto reaction before. To answer your question though, they prefer watching everything in its original source material. They also tried watching two episodes of Shippuden in dub and Carter and Cannon hated it so much that they ended up watching just one episode in dub. (I was immensely happy that day because I tried watching it with them and kept agonizing over the thought that they might enjoy it)

I do want to emphasize that anime openings lie all the time. Sometimes there are just plain spoilers, but a lot of the time it's just action teases of things you expect to happen anyways (even if they don't end up happening or not that way) or symbolic or out of context visuals that are only spoilery in hindsight.

yeah it totally makes sense for sasukes character to do that. he cherishes itachi more than the village, but he wont just go along and listen to what he says. hes been programmed his whole life by tsukuyomi to come back when he has that hatred. sasuke has been slowly falling into it, but he wont just do it as his brother said, he's going to do it his own way, but its fueled by his love for itachi.

And you're right - Naruto is phenomenal, not just for its time, but even now when compared to other anime. Some of my friends started watching Naruto in their late 20s and loved it. Naruto truly transcends time, its themes are still so relatable today. I’m forever grateful for Naruto, it shaped my childhood and gave me that weekly anticipation for shonen episodes. It's not really his fault, it's more of a "you had to be there" kind of thing. When Naruto was airing, most kids had grown up with DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon, and Rurouni Kenshin. All of these shows had common anime tropes like slow pacing, flashbacks, and drawn-out storytelling. So when Naruto came along, we were already used to it. You either liked anime or you didn’t, so it wasn’t a big deal. What made Naruto special was that it brought a big, cohesive story with it. OG Naruto felt like a complete thought by Kishimoto. Hot take, if you remove the Pain Arc from Shippuden, OG Naruto tells a better story overall. It's no surprise that people who are introduced to anime now, starting with modern series and then working backward, struggle with older shows. They’re not used to the slower pacing and storytelling style of the time. It sucks that people play Monday morning quarterback with these trailblazing shonen. Holding older anime to modern standards just isn’t fair. That being said, Naruto, just like DBZ, has episodes that are timeless and can stand up against anything new. I just wish more people understood that and cut older series some slack. But I get it, you can’t force yourself to like something. I just think it’s important to have that context before saying, "If I had to rewatch OG right now, I’d..." That’s not a fair comparison. You don’t get the moments people love in modern anime without OG Naruto paving the way. It was phenomenal for its time.

With One Piece, I agonized through the first 300 episodes, gave up, gave it another chance later and i loved those eps. Expectations play a big role. i feel like the boys might be slightly overstating how unbearable OG was for them. If you go back and watch their reactions to Chuunin Exams, Search for Tsunade, or even the big moments of Sasuke Retrieval Arc, they did seem to be enjoying their time a lot. Sure they had issues with pacing (especially in Sasuke Retrieval Arc), but during the highs of those arcs (Lee vs Gaara, Naruto vs Neji, Sasuke vs Gaara, Naruto vs Gaara, Naruto's Rasengan against Kabuto, Sannin deadlock battle, Itachi moments, Lee & Gaara vs Kimimaro, Naruto vs Sasuke..), they seemed hyped

dialogue in these episodes cooked if you read this carter, FWIW, you don't need to "feel bad" about disliking earlier parts of naruto. personally i hold the show in really high regard despite enjoying the first ~200ish episodes only marginally better than it seems you did. the peaks really hit for me and ended up outweighing them. but i didn't think much about it until i finished the show. probably reading too much into it, but i hope you don't feel at all like you can't hop on and off the metaphorical bandwagon. if anything, i feel a series with this many episodes makes that especially valid. as a rewatcher - i've been surprised in both ways. some episodes were rougher than i remember and some are even better than i remember. just my 2 cents

The only reason you feel this way is because you didnt watch it during the period it aired. All comparable shonen during this time were like this. OG Naruto during this time was a cut above and it wasnt really close. You not watching older style shonen first, as your intro to anime, has affected your experience. Honestly it's less of a problem with the story and more a problem of how the Studio handled the weekly releases. 90% of the issues of OG Naruto and even early shippuden are not in the manga and have to do with a few pages lasting minutes for air time. Naruto manga is actually as fast as some fast pace anime like JJK.

All three of the OG Big Three (Bleach, Naruto, One Piece) have some serious peaks, and I’d still say One Piece is my favorite of the three, but I think Naruto has the biggest chunk of consecutive peak episodes out of all of them. This portion of the show is just so good, and it doesn’t let up for a long time.

Personally i like a lot of the filler arc, some of the stories were written and animated pretty well, plus we get members of the side cast fleshed out. There are definitely pretty bad filler arcs but i think people are too biased when they hear filler, its just overshadowing the good

The problem is these old shows are 2-3 chapters behind when released weekly so they have to drastically slow it down so they don't overtake the manga. Thats why og was like that, this arc definitely picks up the pace.

PEAK INCOMING 🗣️ I don’t think Carter’s take is too crazy tbh. I think the Itachi stuff is better in hindsight once you’ve seen everything there is to his character. Also lots of ppl watched the series as it was ongoing so the hype was there since we’d waited YEARS for this confrontation and to see the extent of Itachi’s powers. Even then tho, imo the Jiraya stuff hits slightly harder because it pulls at your heartstrings. We spent so much more time on that journey + seeing the impact it has on Naruto and his mourning makes it even more sad.

Those places they go in the fillers does exist but its just not canon . The filler was about student and master bonding too and when I watched it first time I didn’t even know filler was a thing lol so the death reveal to Naruto hits a little harder .
