There’s a racial system based on hair and eye color in the light novels that the anime took out that would have explained these supernatural powers better. Each race can actually manifest their own unique abilities, but it’s become more rare due to the mixing of different races. The more pureblood you are the more likely you’ll manifest an ability. Shin is a Pyrope (red hair and red eyes)/Onyx (black hair and black eyes) mixed race from his pureblood mother and father. It was explained that the Para-RAID was created based on Shin’s family’s ability to read each other thoughts/feelings. This is a Pyrope ability from his mother’s side that Shin and his brother inherited. Their father did not have this ability and felt left out so he started what would result in the creation of the RAID device. The Onyx (his father) are a warrior race whose abilities manifest as martial prowess and increased tolerance to toxins. Shin’s ability to walk without a sound is a specific Nouzen family trait. Because both his parents were purebloods it was pretty likely for their children to gain these abilities, but it’s also because they’re purebloods that their families didn’t approve of their relationship. Their families disowned them after they eloped to the Republic. PS: Lena no longer commands Spearhead. She got demoted to Captain after using the artillery to help Shin and got moved to a different squadron, which is why her uncle is not her commanding officer anymore
