I actually watched another reaction channel recently where they paused all the midcards to read them and would often reference them when discussion their theories for certain things in the bigger story. This one was definitely a highlight in giving hints at the wider revelations going forward and they talked about this one a lot when coming up with ideas. I first watched AOT in early 2014 shortly after season 1 finished. I told myself I was only going to watch a few episodes, but boy was I wrong. I ended up watching the first 20 episodes in a single day, and the only reason I stopped was because I didn't want it to be over already. I loved the animation style, music and characters. I was also so intrigued by the mystery of the world. I had to know what was gonna happen and would try to pick up all the details I could to discover the truth of the world - I was definitely obsessed lol. I think this is a great first anime for people who are anime haters. It definitely still has its "anime" moments but the good far outweighs the bad. Glad to see the girls enjoyed it and the boys are finding even more depth and love for the show.

Yeah they can often times let there bias for characters affect reasoning like calling the military police who were asking what's going on bums like they are somehow supposed to know and understand that the scouts made a plan to confront Annie and have a titan battle in the middle of the city 🤣. Also Erwin straight up admits that civilians dying was expected from his plan not to mention that's the whole point of what Armin was saying about being a monster to fight monsters. The show was literally telling them Erwin isn't necessarily doing something good. Not saying its wrong to agree with him but I'm not going to act like the military police's reaction wasn't justified.

I guess the best justification I could come up with is that the specific act of cutting him out wouldn't be as taxing on his injury as having to fight a Titan; it doesn't seem to be a debilitating injury as he can still walk around on it. For the sake of logical continuity, it would be better to have like Hange do it or something; but I can also see how the scene fits Levi's personality more and vice-versa. I don't know...

The finale has a very interesting mid title card which has a story that most people skip. I strongly recommend you guys read the below despite how long it is. The year 784... (76 years ago) One blistering hot night, a miner decided to dig under Wall Sina, to live within the inner ring. "Life in Wall Sina would be pretty nice." That thought had come to him suddenly a few days ago, as he dug with his shovel, deep in a coal mine. In a way, you could call it divine inspiration. And so, for the next few days, he wandered along the wall, finally settling on a spot where the dense forest pressed against it. No one would chance upon him, and the overhead leaves would shelter him and his task from the prying eyes of the guards above. On the next night, he began. Using his trusty shovel, the miner began to dig. The work went smoothly, and before long, the pit was as deep as he was tall. When he could no longer fling dirt outside it, he stuffed it into sacks, climbing a ladder to discard it. Completely dedicated to the task at hand, he took only a few short breaks to drink water and to ease his weary muscles. After spending twenty years of his life digging without a day of rest, the miner knew he was an expert at it. And during that time, he'd learned to dig deeper, more quickly, and more efficiently than anyone else. Tunnels that would stump any other miner were no match for his shovel. But that day was different. He dug for hours, yet never seemed to get anywhere. As he dug, he probed to either side of the main pit with his shovel, but it was of no use. The wall's foundation seemed to go down forever, deep into the earth, blocking his path at every turn. Still he persevered. Any thought of digging his way to an easy life inside Wall Sina had been long forgotten. He simply wanted to conquer the wall. "I'm willing to bet all the years I've spent digging that I will beat this wall," he said to himself, wiping the sweat from his brow. The hole was more than four or five times the miner's height when he struck hard rock. He wondered, "Bedrock?" But it appeared to be of the same material as the wall's foundation itself. The miner swung his shovel down hard on the rock. The shovel shattered, but the rock was unscathed. The miner sighed, and his sigh was deeper than any hole he'd dug in the previous twenty years. With a frown, his friend questioned, "The Wall?" "It's weird, isn't?" the miner said, lifting his drink to his lips. "Who knew that the wall went so deep underground?" The pair sat across from one another at a table in the back if a tavern in a seedy part of town. Most days, the miner would go there with his friend, his only friend, after work. That day, the day after he'd tried to dig under the wall, they'd gone there as usual, once the workday was done. And then, the miner told his friend the story, certain that his friend could keep a secret. "Maybe we're surrounded by walls not only above the ground, but below the ground, too." said the miner. "Tell me something... What, exactly, are the walls?" His friend cut him off with a cough, glancing around the tavern. The patrons were all busy drinking, hitting on the tavern maid, or yelling at one another. No one was watching them. But even so, the miner decided not to say another word about it. If anyone heard him, the Military Police would be there in an instant. "Does it really matter?" his friend asked. "Just keep on living here as you always have. You're poor, but you have a job every day, and enough money that you can drink. Inst that enough?" "Yeah," the miner replied. "Yeah, it is. I'll go back to digging. In the end, I guess that's my lot in life." But the next day, the miner didn't show up for work. Not the next... Nor the day after that. His friend went to his house many times, but never saw any sign of him. the miner had no relatives, nor other close friends, so there was no one to ask where he might have gone. Unsure what to do, his friend eventually went to the Garrison, and told them the whole story. The next day, the Military Police and the Garrison organized a large-scale search party. It was a little excessive for one poor miner, even if that miner was a criminal who'd tried to pass under the walls. His friend couldn't understand why they were so bent on finding him. But they never found a trace of the miner, nor even the pit he'd dug. And one day, his friend also vanished, never to be seen again.......

My personal rating for season 1 is a 7.5/10. Trost arc is a 7 and female titan arc is an 8. Main issues with season 1 is simply the pacing is inconsistent. We have 4 strong episodes in trost and then have 4 episodes where very little happens and it strats to drag. The female titan arc is consistent action all the ay through but their is a lot of inner monologuing which gets grating after a while. Carter is correct that season 1 is the most "anime" that the show is and the issues of season 1 disappear going forward thankfully. Cant wait for season 2, now the show truly begins in my eyes

You really can't blame the Military Police here. They weren't informed of any plan, nor were most of them equipped with ODM gear. Also, after seeing her in action, I think it's safe to say Annie's female titan is not "just one titan" haha. Even after getting past the initial confusion/shock, it would've been stupid for the MPs to try and fight Annie, considering the difficulty the Scouts were having. Prioritizing the safety of civilians was the best thing the inexperienced and ill-equipped MPs could hope to do in that situation.

I’m willing to be the lone Nile defender in these comments 😂 I personally think it’s right for us to be critical of Erwin’s decision to execute this plan in an occupied city. Sacrificing scouts on the expedition in a gambit to lure out an enemy titan was one thing when we’re talking about soldiers who signed up for this. But this time there’s no getting around it, Erwin sacrificed dozens and potentially hundreds of civilian lives this time, that’s another level. If you lived in Stohess you’d probably see Nile arresting him as the Military Police’s biggest dub of the episode 😅

I can see how confused the guys' reaction is in the last episode. Season 1 of AoT didn't get any oversight from Isayama, the author/mangaka of AoT. So the anime studio took a few liberties in some places, especially in some huge parts in the first episode. I know the girls are reading the comments so I won't say what parts of the first episode. However, for the last episode they did that thing with Eren that caused them to look confused. Also, they ended off season 1 with Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and Jean in that room after the fight. Which is gonna be confusing when you start season 2 because it starts minutes after Annie crystallized, instead of a new day. The good thing is that from season 2 and onward, Isayama has more involvement in the anime.

Annie’s conversation with Marlowe about wanting to be seen as a normal person is slightly longer in the manga and I’d recommend any fan to look it up and give it a quick read (chapter 31) I think the anime left out a few crucial lines which make Annie’s speech make a bit more sense. She’s basically saying those who are meek or cowardly or who just go with the flow and follow orders and don’t stand up to corruption are the norm. She says the military police is inefficient and corrupt not necessarily because they’re evil but because the organization reflects human nature. She argues to Marlowe that his bravery makes him special and in seeking to punish corruption he’s ignoring his enemies’ fundamental humanity. In the end Marlowe comes to the understanding that his enemy may not be corrupt *people* but the system itself that allows and rewards corruption

In episode 16 or 17, when the scouts were trying to find out who killed Sawney and Bean by checking the gas, Armin and Annie were having a conversation. Armin said something like Annie, you’re actually a very good person right? (Because she is implicitly persuading them to join the MP instead of the scouts). Annie was shocked by his words because she never considered herself as good, but she didn’t deny that. In the same scene, Annie said that Armin has guts even though he’s weak. She was praising him because she can’t be like Armin. She thinks herself as weak, despite her physical prowess, because she doesn’t have the courage to change the currents that Eren or Armin have, and that’s why she respects them. The topic of courage is intentionally brought up again with the incident of Marlow. This is why Annie and Armin are having a conversation about good and bad in the alley, and that’s why Annie was shocked when Armin said she would be a bad person for him. He is the only person who has ever called her good. Other people all compliment how strong she is, but these compliments don’t get to her. She may seem aloof, but she’s really hurt by Armin’s look in this episode. It’s actually cute that she (the female titan) lifted Armin’s hood, given these interactions they have. It wasn’t Jean or Connie. It was intentionally Armin. Isayama doesn’t waste a single panel of his manga. Every conversation or scene is useful.
