The whole time I was watching this with you guys I was waiting for it to get sad with the mom, and I've seen this before, but then when it ended I realized when I first saw this movie I was expecting it to be sad like you guys and that's what I was remembering. Also a haunted house and spirits mean very different things in japanese culture. There are certainly evil spirits but there are also benign and benevolent spirits, much like in Spirited Away. Unlike western society where paganism was demonized and anything besides christianity was rebranded as evil, so when you're raised in the west any spirit that isn't the holy spirit is like an evil ghost, but outside of christian societies spirits are much more varied.

This is kind of random but I really want to recommend The First Slam Dunk for your next anime movie! It's like a spin-off of an extremely famous basketball manga series called Slam Dunk and I think you'll like it seeing how you've enjoyed Haikyu and are b-ball fans. Unfortunately the original anime was made decades ago so it's not good for reactions but the recent movie is very wellmade! Obviously you'll understand it better if you know the manga but you don't have to to enjoy it

For the context, "Totoro" was played in the theater WITH "Grave of the Fireflies" back then, bcz "Totoro" was a kid's show and was just too "simple" to be a individual movie. "Totoro" doesn't have a deeper meaning or anything like the other Gibri shows, it's just a feel good show. But can you imgine how ppl felt watching feels good Totoro and devestaing Grave of the Fireflies at the same time?

Totoro is definitely a feel-good movie with a focus on childhood imagination and the way it’s lost as we progress towards adulthood. The way children cope with challenging time is through imaginary friends ☺️ I would recommend reacting to sword of strangers, blue eyed samurai, the girl who leapt through time, summer wars, and a few others :)

The same studio that made Dandadan is also making the new Ghost in the Shell series which is coming out in 2026. The 1995 movie which is considered to be the most philosophical anime ever made would be a good start into the franchise which spans 30 years through movies and tv series.

Mckay, "the police hat" that kid in the beginning was wearing is the school hat. In Japan, kids are supposed to wear a school hat in kindergarten/elementary on the way to/from school. He doesn't have to wear it other occasions but I guess he likes to wear it on a daily basis.

Carter, I imagine most/a ton of the budget for Invincible goes towards the voice actors/actresses. There are probably a bunch of other factors too, but I do wish the animation quality was prioritized more. I know the working conditions/expectations for animators in Japan are often pretty bad, but I'm unsure if that was the case in the 80's.

I love Ghibli and any movie you pick from the will be good, but I also want to recommend Satoshi Kon' work, Like Perfect Blue or Paprika. And if you guys ever feel in the mood for a mistery/suspense anime, he did Paranoia Agent, it's short, only 13 episodes, great for watch parties maybe.

Wow, haven't seen this movie since I was around 8. Super nostalgic and wholesome of a movie. While I personally love Totoro, I feel it's a little too mild for you guys; that said, I'm glad you guys still checked it out. EDIT: Just finished the reaction, and I'm really glad you guys enjoyed it! I was wrong... "too mild" isn't a bad thing 😅 If you guys want a Ghibli movie more in line with Mononoke's theme (more dark and action), I highly recommend Nauscicaa. My goated Ghibli movie out of the collection. Castle in the Sky/Laputa is also really good.

The 1995 “Ghost in the Shell” movie is arguably the most philosophical anime in history and Carter would probably like that movie (he ranks Cyberpunk pretty high and that draws inspiration from the franchise). Studio Ghibli actually worked on the sequel Innocence which is visually stunning.
