The manhwa was really focused on the action and shounen aspects of the story, which made for an amazingly hype and exciting read, but it did lack a lot in the slow moments for people to breathe. I was surprised they didn't show the fight btw Jongsoo and Hanekawa too! It was a nice little lesson about the difference in experience that each had with fighting other hunters and a great scene to show that A-ranks are also pretty badass. But I agree. I won't complain about it if they do justice to the animation and beauty of Solo Leveling's best asset: the artstyle

But they have dropped hints that he doesn't live in South Korea anymore [from season 1 episode 7, when he first finds out about his brother's death and asks Laura, his manager, about what would happen if he killed a hunter in another country; from season 2 episode 1, when Woo Jinchul, leader of the Korean Hunter Association's Surveillance Team, asks Hwang Dongsoo if he came back to the homeland he "abandoned" just to find Jinwoo and Jinho], and that he immigrated overseas to America [from season 2 episode 1 also, when Hwang Dongsoo pulls up to the red gate that Jinwoo entered, only to encounter Baek Yoonho, who asks why he's in Korea when he should be in America]. In this case, even if not explicitly stated in the anime, the only reason Hwang Dongsoo lives in America rather than in South Korea and is seen as someone who "abandoned" his homeland is that he rejected all offers from the guilds in Korea and moved to the states for better prospects instead.

We just have no idea what they thought of the dad being gone, at least from the shows pov, like do they think he’s missing, dead, left them on purpose, like idk. This episode clearly shows that the mom cared a lot for him despite his disappearance so clearly she still cares. I bet when he shows up the kids will be a bit angry because he left them alone until they find out he was stuck. I just need the dad to come back around to get a dang explanation as to who exactly he is and what the f has been going on with him

You are so right. I really like this take on the story. I don’t feel like I’m missing too much. I am loving the add ons. It feels less clunky than the manhwa. Because sometimes the manhwa felt like it didn’t explain much of some character’s motivations like Byung-Gyu and Baek’s backstory. However I would have liked some of the gags and Jongsoo’s fight to stay. But if the side bits are gone to add in the gorgeous animation and art I will let it slide because that is what I loved most about the manhwa.

As of now, the anime is about 91 chapters into the manhwa, which has a total of 179 chapters + 21 epilogue chapters so HAHA we're almost halfway into the story. There's still a shit ton of stuff to discover. Atp, the manhwa isn't even done with it's first season yet, which ends at chapter 110. I totally understand the desire to see more exposition about Jinwoo's family, his mom, and more character-focused stuff, but tbh, the anime is giving us a lot more than the manhwa did for that. In the manhwa, there's even less of these backstories, conversations btw the S-rank hunters, and other anime-original scenes. The pace is literally BOOM BOOM BOOM, it's a never-ending slew of epic fights, with a small pinch of breathers in btw. It just feels slower because each chapter is shorter than one of these episodes and fights take up about 4-8 chapters to complete. BUT, I can guarantee as a manhwa reader that there's a sure direction this story focuses on. Have faith guys! All will be revealed in due time:)

Also, I'm actually glad that some of y'all are understanding of Jinwoo's hesitance to go on the Jeju Island raid. I mean, it would be great if he went. He would be an amazing asset against an army of ants with his own army, but I agree with Cannon and Carter. Now that Jinwoo JUST reunited with his family, he's hesitant to leave them for a raid that would be beneficial to him, but he could technically pass up on if all he wanted was the opportunity to level up. He gets those chances already with the system helping him progress, so I get he wouldn't want to be so reckless with his life now. Oh btw, Hwang Dongsoo is South Korean! He was one of Korea's S-rank hunters, included in the 10 total that Korea has produced, but he immigrated to America because he signed a contract with a guild there over one of Korea's guilds. So technically, he's an American hunter:)

More clarifications and details!: - It was said that Jinwoo's dad went missing when he was working as a hunter! We already knew he was a high ranking hunter from his interrogation with Hwang Dongsoo, so it's highly possible that his work at the time had something to do with his missing status. Though I don't believe the manhwa made it clear at this point in the story how he went missing. - In the manhwa, after Jinwoo's mom wakes up, he actually checks his phone while he's taking a breather in the park outside the hospital and realises that news outlets are reporting sightings of a winged beast in the sky(which was actually Kaisel because he flew on his back to get to the hospital HAHAHA) - Before Goto Ryuji suggests the friendly spar btw S-ranks, Park Jongsoo (the Guildmaster of the Knight's Guild that tried to pick a fight with Hanekawa, the interpreter from Japan) actually spars against Hanekawa. He said he understands a little bit of Japanese cause he studied there for a few years, and he was offended by how dismissive she was of South Korea's S-ranks. Hanekawa suggested a spar since they're both A-ranks and the winner wins by grabbing their opponent's wrist first. The result was that Jongsoo won, and that was how Goto Ryuji got the inspiration for the spar btw the S-ranks, though Yoonho added on more rules after that and modified it.

A1 pictures really came for my tear ducts this episode cause why tf did they have to hurt me like that? I loved it so much that I sobbed literal tears during that scene. He's been working tirelessly not just to grow stronger to protect his family but also to cure his mom AND come back to them alive time and time again. In the manhwa, this scene was just one panel of him with tears streaming down his face, and that was without his mother cradling his cheek in her hand. I actually think A1 did a phenomenal job animating this scene and making it more emotional at the same time. Jinwoo doesn't express his emotions a whole lot after he starts to become less and less human, so this was an amazing time for him to let all his frustrations, worries and stress out. Honestly, bravo to the directors and the animators, and OFC to Taito Ban, Jinwoo's VA for the superb work they did this episode. This is genuinely the first scene where I thought the anime did a better job than the manhwa.

Some clarifications + details from the manhwa: - The Holy Water of Life doesn't make the drinker younger! That was just the potion healing her scars and the malnutrition she was probably experiencing as a coma patient. Since she hasn't been able to eat real food for 4 years, it makes sense that her cheeks would be sunken in from being fed through a mere IV drip this whole time. You can also see that her lips were dry and chapped and that was fixed too. - In the manhwa, the doctors actually wanted to keep Jinwoo's mom in the hospital longer because they said a newly awakened coma patient shouldn't be strong enough to move around at all. But since the Holy Water of Life took care of her body's weakened state, she could. It actually shocked the doctors because there has never been a patient who woke up from Eternal Slumber before, and they wanted to study this phenomenon by holding her in the hospital(typical lol). But they changed their minds when they learned it was Jinwoo's mom, cause they didn't wanna make an S-rank hunter angry by refusing his demand HAHAHA

To answer Jack's question about why Korea is only fielding 5 S ranks and not their 10; there have been 10 S ranks total in Korea. There are currently only 6 active, as it was stated earlier in the episode, the S rank Healer guy retired. Their other friend died on Jeju island, Hwang Donsuk doesn't live in Korea anymore and is a part of an American guild (ran by that Thomas Andre guy), the Chairman is also retired, and Jinwoo being number 10 hasn't said or not if he'd be participating. So those 5 plus the 5 that are for sure participating, rounds out the 10. They only said 6 because they were sure they'd be able to get Jinwoo's participation. Also as far as Thomas Andre goes, he's our first intro to "National Level Hunters." There are a few of them across the world. They are S ranks, said to be as strong as an entire nation's military.

Im starting to agree with others that the pacing is just speed-running the world-building just to animate the fighting scenes. It reminds me a lot of "God of High School" where they don't say a whole lot or expand on characters, especially Jinwoo. He isn't so 1D, he shows a lot more emotions than the brooding, silent, aura-eluding type. Anyway, I totally rec the manhwa, it's a lot easier to digest than BW manga.

@yio - Thats my point exactly. There is very little development in the story besides fighting and gaining power. We know so little about most of the characters personalities or backgrounds and all their interactions have been so limited. It is ALL FIGHTING. I enjoy exciting moments as anyone else, but I would also like to see more character depth and drama. Thats what I think Im missing. It doesnt help that every episode is is a cliffhanger. I feel like if I was able to stop myself from watching this show till every episode was out and then watch them all at once, my enjoyment (not rating) would jump from like an 7/10 to probably a 10/10. It is really hard to enjoy it FULLY when you feel so edged literally every episode. Id rate the show overall so far as at least an 8/10, probably higher, but the story development is SO SLOW I cant realistically decide.

And the A rank guild master is important because...? The conversation set the tone for upcoming events which was massively needed since Jeju Island is a PROBLEM. It needed to be clear just how deadly the island *used* to be, and how its gotten considerably worse now that the ants have evolved. Using the dead friend as a means of getting that across was a good move. Replacing that added dread for a fight that has NO impact on the story at all would have been a terrible decision. The devices measure up to uhh however high in A-rank and anything higher than that is an error aka S-rank. Essentially there is no way to measure the power gaps in the S-rank tier unless they like fight each other or something.

The Koreans have almost all of their S rank hunters there at the training. Chairman is one of the 10 S ranks. Jin Woo, Choi (red head) Baek (other redhead beast) Lady Cha, Coach Ma (who is wrestling with Baek) and the longer haired guy. The healer from the bar scene with Baek is also an S rank but he is retired. The other S rank that died to the ants is still considered one of the 10 S ranks. There is only 1 s rank that isn’t accounted for.

I don’t agree, I felt more hype during reading, it just had that energy. Only hype I get from watching are the final boss fights or Jinwoo aura farming infront of other hunters, other than that it just feels like a rush through until the climax point.
